RLCraft is based on an older Minecraft/Forge stack, so using a newer Java runtime is the most common reason the server fails before it starts.

What you need before starting
This procedure is for a self-hosted RLCraft server on a computer or virtual machine that you control. It applies to the 1.12.2-based RLCraft server pack described by the installation guides. Keep the server separate from your client installation: create a dedicated folder such as RLCraft-server, and use that folder for the extracted pack, Forge installer, generated world, configuration files and backups.

- The RLCraft server pack downloaded from CurseForge.
- Java 8, including a way to invoke the Java 8 executable explicitly if another Java version is installed.
- Forge 1.12.2 build 14.23.5.2860.
- Permission to edit text files and run programs in the server folder.
- At least 5 GB of system memory is recommended by one hosting guide; its example gives the Java process a 4 GB maximum heap and 2 GB initial heap, with the remainder left for the operating system and background services. That guide also warns that assigning substantially more than 4 GB can create problems, so treat this as a starting point rather than an absolute universal requirement.
- Router access if players outside your home network must connect.
RLCraft pack versions change independently of this article. A guide reported version 2.9.3 as the latest release in June 2023. Because this article is being prepared in October 2026, check the current CurseForge file before downloading and make sure every player uses the same pack release.
1. Download and unpack the server pack
- Download the latest RLCraft server pack from the RLCraft project on CurseForge. Choose the server-pack download, not only the client profile.
- Create the dedicated server folder you prepared above.
- Extract every file from the archive directly into that folder. Avoid an extra nested directory such as
RLCraft-server/RLCraft-server/; the Forge installer and the eventual launch command should operate in the folder that contains the pack files. - Open the folder and confirm that the archive contents are present before continuing. The pack does not include Forge or a ready-made startup script, so those two pieces are installed manually.
Do not delete configuration, scripts or libraries supplied by the pack. They define the mod set and are needed when Forge generates the server installation.

2. Install and verify Java 8
RLCraft’s 1.12.2 server requires Java 8. Java 17, Java 21 or another modern runtime may be installed on the same machine, but invoking one of those versions for this server commonly causes an immediate startup error or an incompatible-mod failure.
Check the Java version
Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:
java -versionThe output should identify a 1.8.x runtime. If it reports another major version, install a Java 8 runtime and either change the system path for this session or call Java 8 by its full path in every command.

One installation guide suggests:
sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre-headlessPackage names vary by distribution and repository. After installation, run java -version again. If several Java versions are registered, select the Java 8 executable with your operating system’s alternatives tool, or retain the full path and use it explicitly, for example:
/path/to/java8 -versionOn Windows, install a Java 8 distribution, then locate its java.exe. A full-path launch command avoids ambiguity when another Java version appears first in PATH.
3. Install Forge 1.12.2 in the RLCraft folder
The guides identify Forge build 14.23.5.2860 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Download the matching Forge installer and place it somewhere accessible. Use Java 8 to run it; launching the installer with a newer Java version can fail even when Java 8 is installed.
Graphical installer
- Run the Forge installer with Java 8.
- Choose Install server.
- Set the destination to the folder containing the extracted RLCraft server pack.
- Confirm the installation and wait for Forge to download its libraries and create the server files.
Command-line installer
From the RLCraft folder, run the installer with Java 8:

java -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860-installer.jar --installServerIf java resolves to the wrong runtime, replace it with the full Java 8 path:
/path/to/java8 -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860-installer.jar --installServerA successful installation creates forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar. That Forge jar, rather than the installer jar, is the file you launch for the server.
4. Start once and accept the EULA
Forge needs one startup attempt to generate files. From the server folder, launch the Forge jar with Java 8. The first run may stop and create eula.txt; this is expected.
- Open
eula.txtin a text editor. - Change the line
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Restart the same Forge command.
Setting the value means the server operator accepts Mojang’s EULA. Do this only after reading the EULA and only for a server you are authorized to operate. If the file is recreated with false, stop the server, edit the newly generated file again, and verify that your editor did not save a second extension such as eula.txt.txt.

5. Set the RLCraft server properties
Edit server.properties in the same folder. A Space-Node installation guide reports the following four values for the pack:

These four settings come from one guide rather than a cross-checked official specification. Verify them against the documentation shipped with the exact RLCraft release you downloaded. Edit only the values you intend to change, preserve the key=value format, and stop the server before saving properties so a running process cannot overwrite your edits.

6. Allocate memory and launch the server
Use the Forge jar created by the installer. The example below follows the guide’s 4 GB maximum and 2 GB initial heap:
java -Xmx4G -Xms2G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar noguiRun it from inside the RLCraft folder. With multiple Java installations, substitute the full Java 8 path:
/path/to/java8 -Xmx4G -Xms2G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar nogui-Xmx4G limits the Java heap, while -Xms2G sets the initial heap. The machine still needs memory for the operating system and other services. The cited hosting guidance recommends at least 5 GB of total system RAM for this example and cautions that substantially increasing the heap beyond 4 GB may hurt stability. Monitor the machine rather than assuming that a larger number is automatically better.
Keep the console available while testing
The nogui argument runs the server in the terminal, where Forge and mods print loading progress and errors. Leave this window open during the first successful boot. When the console reports that the server has finished loading, type server commands there; to stop safely, use the server’s stop command rather than closing the window or killing the process.
7. Test a local connection
Before changing router settings, test from a computer on the same network. Start the server, wait for a completed load, and add the host machine’s local IP address in the Minecraft multiplayer screen. Testing locally separates Minecraft, Java and Forge problems from Internet routing problems.
- Use the same Minecraft and modpack release as the server.
- Connect only after the server has completed its first full startup.
- Keep the console visible so you can see whether a connection is accepted or rejected.
If the local test works, the software installation is functioning and any remaining connection issue is likely related to the network boundary, firewall or address being used.

8. Make the server reachable from outside your network
Players outside your home network need the server’s host address and a router rule that forwards TCP port 25565 to the computer running the server. The standard Minecraft server port is the value identified by the installation guides.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using your router’s address reservation feature or an equivalent method.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for TCP port
25565to that local address. - Allow the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall when it prompts, or create an equivalent inbound rule.
- Start the server and have an outside player connect using your public IP address. Do not give outside players the private address used only inside your LAN.
Port forwarding exposes a service to the Internet. Use a strong operating-system account password, apply security updates, and forward only the port you need. If your Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not provide an externally reachable address; in that case, ask the provider about a public address or use a hosted alternative.

The server exits immediately or reports an unsupported class version
Check java -version and the Java executable used in the launch command. RLCraft requires Java 8. Installing Java 8 is not enough if the command still resolves to Java 17 or another version; use the full Java 8 path and rerun the Forge installer with that same runtime.
The Forge installer will not install the server
- Confirm that the installer is for Minecraft 1.12.2 and build
14.23.5.2860. - Run it with Java 8, not the system default if that default is newer.
- Choose the extracted RLCraft folder as the server destination.
- Check that the account has write permission and that the folder is not read-only.
The server says the EULA has not been accepted
Stop the process, open the eula.txt in the active server folder, and verify the exact line is eula=true. Make sure you edited the folder used by the launch command and that the file was not saved with a hidden second extension.
The server starts but the pack behaves incorrectly
Check server.properties for the four pack-specific values reported above, then compare them with the documentation for your exact pack release. A typo, a duplicate property or an edit made while the server was running can leave the effective value unchanged.
The process runs out of memory or becomes unstable
Confirm that the host has enough total memory for the heap plus the operating system. Begin with the cited 4 GB maximum and 2 GB initial heap example, observe actual usage, and change one setting at a time. Assigning a much larger heap is not a guaranteed fix and is specifically cautioned against by the guide that supplied this recommendation.
Local players can connect, but remote players cannot
- Confirm that the server is listening on the expected port and that local connections still work.
- Check the router rule forwards TCP
25565to the correct machine and local address. - Check the host firewall and any security software.
- Have the remote player use the current public IP address.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT or a changing public address if forwarding appears correct but the port remains unreachable.
Docker and hosting-panel alternatives
Manual installation gives you direct control over Java, Forge, memory flags, files and upgrades, but you also maintain the operating system, backups and networking. Two alternatives reduce some of that work.
Docker
The community image goobaroo/rlcraft downloads RLCraft 1.12.2 release v2.9.3 on its first run, according to its published setup description. It requires the environment variable EULA="true". Setting that variable is the operator’s acceptance of Mojang’s EULA. Pin the image and pack version deliberately, persist the server data outside the container, and confirm that the image still supports the RLCraft release you intend to run before relying on it for a long-lived world.

Hosting panels that offer a CurseForge modpack installer can automate file deployment, Java selection and port exposure. They trade some low-level control for a guided interface and a recurring hosting bill. Verify which RLCraft release, Java runtime, memory limit and backup features the panel actually provides; an installer label alone does not guarantee compatibility with every pack revision.

Keeping the server maintainable
Back up before changing versions
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories, and label the backup with the RLCraft and Forge versions. Never test a pack upgrade only on the sole copy of a world.
Keep client and server releases aligned
Every player should install the same RLCraft release and mod set as the server. A version mismatch can look like a networking failure even when the server itself is healthy.
Document the launch configuration
Record the Java 8 path, Forge jar name, heap flags, server port and any property changes. This makes recovery possible after a Java update, drive migration or host replacement.
