What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming, with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- A computer running streaming software, or a hardware encoder. For a static black picture with audio, software encoding is a practical starting point.
- A sleep-sounds recording that you created or are authorized to stream and archive.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.
YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the night you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create an encoder stream, or schedule one for later. Scheduling gives you a watch page you can prepare and share ahead of time. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Don’t share it publicly.
Configure the black picture and sleep sounds
Make the video black
In your encoder, create a scene with a black canvas or a black image as its only video source. Make sure no other source—such as a desktop capture, camera, overlay, or animated visual—is visible. YouTube’s encoder documentation explains how to send a video signal, but does not provide a dedicated black-screen preset; the scene is configured in your encoder.
Route the audio
Add your chosen sleep-sounds recording as the audio source. Check that the encoder is sending that source and that the level is audible without clipping. If the recording is a file, set it to repeat for the planned broadcast duration or prepare a playlist that will not run out. Use content you created or have permission to use for both the live stream and any saved replay.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and, for stereo audio, 44.1 kHz sampling at 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain a stream.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube publishes resolution-specific bitrate recommendations in its encoder settings guide. Choose the bitrate for your selected resolution from that guide, then check that your upload connection has headroom. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth at least 20% above the stream’s bitrate and advises testing upload speed and using a reliable network. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to connect a compatible computer or encoder; it is not a YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture is black and the sleep sounds are audible.
- Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected system audio, or interruptions between tracks. Confirm the audio continues for the full planned duration.
- Check that the stream appears as expected on the channel or watch page, including on a phone if that is how viewers may watch.
- Monitor stream health and warnings in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with audio and activity similar to the real broadcast; for this format, test the actual black scene and sleep audio.
- If you will be away from the computer, make sure the computer will not sleep, shut down, or lose power, and that the encoder and network will remain active.

Plan the length if you want a replay
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, schedule the stream for less than 12 hours with a buffer and keep a local recording as a backup. After ending the broadcast, check the archive. Use audio you are allowed to stream
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the content in a live broadcast, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may replace the video with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Understand monetization limits
A black-screen sleep stream is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and expects original, authentic content rather than material that is mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission, so a licensed track may still raise a channel-level monetization concern. The policy does not give a categorical decision for every black-screen sleep stream. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check that the channel is verified and eligible, and that live streaming has been enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The preview is not black: Inspect the encoder scene for an active desktop, camera, image, or overlay source. Leave only the black canvas or image visible.
- There is no sound: Confirm the correct audio source is selected, the file or playlist is playing, and the encoder’s audio meter moves. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live to viewers.
- The stream buffers or drops: Check the connection and upload speed, reduce the bitrate or resolution if your connection cannot sustain the current settings, and preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom.
- YouTube warns about copyrighted audio: Stop or replace the matched material, or resolve the rights issue with the rights owner. If you have a license, ask whether the owner must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- The replay is missing: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Check the stream duration and your local recording, if you made one.

End the broadcast cleanly
When the planned session is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder, following YouTube’s live-stream tips. Check the archive afterward if you need to keep the replay.
