First work out whether the TV is slow to navigate or whether video is buffering: menu and app lag usually calls for TV or app troubleshooting, while buffering across multiple apps points to the network. Start with a restart, completed updates, and app maintenance. If the screen still works well but its built-in apps are slow or no longer supported, an HDMI streaming player can supply a separate app platform.
Diagnose what feels slow
- Menus, startup, or apps are slow: Try restarting, updating, closing background apps, clearing the affected app’s cache, and checking available storage. Google TV’s troubleshooting guidance covers freezing, slow startup, slow search response, and apps that take a long time to open: Google TV Help.
- One app is slow or crashes: Force-stop and reopen it, check for an app update, and clear its cache if the TV offers that control. If only one service is affected while others work, check that provider’s service status and your account before treating the TV as the cause.
- Several apps buffer: Check whether other devices also have trouble. That pattern suggests a network connection issue rather than slow TV menus; try reducing competing network use or testing Ethernet if the TV supports it.
Try low-risk fixes first
1. Restart the TV
Use the TV’s on-screen Restart option if available. If you need to power-cycle it, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. Restarting can clear temporary issues, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost; TCL describes it as a way to clear temporary system issues that may cause slow performance: TCL Support.

2. Let updates finish, then update apps and system software
A TV may respond slowly while app updates are running. Let them complete, then check for updates to both the apps and the TV’s system software. Updates may include bug or compatibility fixes, though the exact options and support period depend on the model and region. Google’s guidance notes that updates can affect performance while in progress: Google TV Help.

On Google TV, the documented path is Settings > Apps > Recently opened apps > [app] > Force stop. Reopen the app afterward. Other TV platforms use different menus, so do not assume this path or the control exists on every set: Google TV Help.

4. Clear the affected app’s cache
On supported Google TV menus, TCL gives this path: Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear cache. Cache clearing removes temporary app files and does not uninstall the app. If the app still misbehaves, clearing its data or storage is a stronger step that may sign you out or reset preferences; menu labels and availability vary by TV and software version: TCL Support.
5. Free storage if space is low
Uninstall apps you no longer use if the TV is short on storage. TCL notes that low storage may cause apps to run slowly or fail to open, and recommends removing unused apps and clearing cache: TCL Support.

If video buffers, check the network
Test another app and, if possible, another device on the same connection. If multiple apps or devices struggle, try moving the router closer, reducing network-heavy activity, or connecting the TV by Ethernet if it has a port. Ethernet can help test or stabilize the connection; it will not make slow menus faster or guarantee faster app performance. Xiaomi’s support guidance also recommends a stable connection, reducing competing network use, and power-cycling the TV and router: Xiaomi Support.
For its Mi TV Bezel-less buffering guidance, Xiaomi suggests 10 Mbps for 4K UHD video, 5 Mbps for 2K, and 2.5 Mbps for 720p. These are Xiaomi’s suggested bitrates for that guidance, not universal requirements for every streaming service or a measure of how much a troubleshooting step will speed up a TV: Xiaomi Support.

Factory reset only as a last resort
If the earlier steps fail, a factory reset may be an option, but it erases installed apps, accounts, and custom settings; you will need to set up the TV again. Follow the instructions for the exact model and platform, and make sure you have the information needed to sign back into your services. Reset guidance is also provided by TCL, Samsung Gulf, and Xiaomi; Samsung’s cited guidance is specific to Samsung Gulf and dated June 15, 2026.
When an HDMI streaming player makes sense
If the TV’s display is still good but its built-in platform remains frustrating or cannot run an app you need, a separate HDMI streaming player can provide its own interface and apps while the TV serves as the screen. Roku says its players connect to TVs with HDMI. For 4K or HDR playback, the TV and connected equipment must also be compatible; check the HDMI port and any receiver or soundbar in the signal path, as well as app and content support: Roku Support.

What to expect from these fixes
Official support guidance recommends these troubleshooting steps, but it does not establish a typical speed gain for restarting, clearing cache, removing apps, or adding a streaming player. Results depend on the TV model, software, app, storage, and network, so treat each step as a way to diagnose or resolve a particular symptom rather than a guaranteed performance upgrade.
