What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For one lecture file, add an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For several files, add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Those settings repeat the media; they do not keep OBS, your computer, internet connection, or the streaming service online by themselves.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to repeat | OBS source and setting | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One lecture video | Media Source → Loop | Loop replays the file when playback completes; it is off by default. |
| Several lecture videos | VLC Video → Loop Playlist | Loop Playlist restarts the source after it runs out of media and is on by default. Shuffle Playlist is off by default, so files play in playlist order. |
These are different controls: a standard Media Source repeats one file, while VLC Video provides the multi-item playlist interface. OBS describes VLC Video this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Media Sources documentation.

Set up a single lecture video
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lecture. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local lecture file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. This makes the file replay when it reaches the end.
- Confirm that the source is visible in the active scene and that the video and audio play as intended.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the supported video formats. A supported extension alone does not guarantee that a particular file will play correctly in your setup, so verify the actual file before starting a long broadcast. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Set up a playlist of lecture videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. VLC Video requires VLC; if your OBS installation is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. OBS lists VLC Video for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video.
- Open the source properties and add the lecture files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback starts again after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence, or enable it if you want the order shuffled.
- Keep the source visible in the scene used for streaming. VLC Video’s documented behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible by default. If you need to use other scenes, review the source’s visibility behavior rather than assuming hidden playback continues.
- Play through the end of a file and into the next item; then check that the playlist returns to its beginning after the last item.
Source settings and supported options can vary by OBS build and operating system. If the VLC Video source is unavailable or cannot find VLC, check the VLC installation and architecture match first. OBS Media Sources documentation.

Prepare OBS and the broadcast for a long run
Configure the stream for your computer and connection
Use OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard to set up streaming for your intended use, computer resources, and network conditions. The correct resolution, encoder, and bitrate depend on your hardware, connection, and platform; the title alone does not establish universal values. Confirm the current limits and recommendations of the service you are streaming to. OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard.
Verify audio and test before going live
- Watch the Audio Mixer meters while the lecture plays. Confirm that the intended audio source is active and the output settings are appropriate.
- Make a short OBS recording or test stream and check both the picture and sound. A preview is useful, but a test through the actual broadcast path can expose problems that are not visible locally.
- Check what viewers will see when the playlist reaches its end and starts again, including any pause, transition, or gap between files.
OBS recommends a short test stream or recording before the real broadcast. OBS streaming guide.

Understand what looping does—and does not—guarantee
Loop and Loop Playlist control media playback inside OBS. They do not restart OBS after a crash, keep a computer powered, repair an internet connection, or guarantee that a platform will accept the stream continuously. Treat uninterrupted delivery as a separate reliability problem: monitor OBS and the stream, and test the full setup before relying on it for an extended lecture broadcast.
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a different server or service, lowering bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and platform limits, and checking network configuration and software. The guide’s suggestion to start around 75% of total upload speed is a troubleshooting starting point—not a universal rule or a guarantee. OBS dropped-frames and connection troubleshooting.

OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable; a faulty cable is also among the possible hardware causes it identifies. If OBS reports no dropped frames but viewers still experience buffering, their networks, devices, and locations may differ. Lowering bitrate while remaining within the platform’s recommendations may help viewers on weaker connections, but can require a trade-off in resolution, video quality, or frame rate. OBS stream connection troubleshooting and OBS streaming guide.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture plays once and stops. | Loop is off, or the wrong source type was added. | For one file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Only one item appears or plays. | The files were not added to the VLC Video playlist, or a Media Source was used instead. | Open VLC Video properties and confirm the intended files are in its playlist. |
| The playlist does not play in the intended order. | Shuffle Playlist is enabled or the list order is incorrect. | Turn off Shuffle Playlist for sequential playback and arrange the items as needed. |
| Playback stops after switching scenes. | The VLC Video source is hidden, and its visibility behavior stops playback while hidden. | Keep the source visible in the streaming scene; review its visibility behavior if scene changes are necessary. |
| VLC Video is missing or does not work. | VLC may not be installed, or the OBS and VLC architectures may not match. | Install VLC and, for 64-bit OBS, ensure VLC is 64-bit too. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects. | The network connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Try a wired connection, investigate network or software issues, and lower bitrate to a level that fits stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits. |
| OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering. | Viewer-side network, device, or location differences can affect playback. | Consider a lower bitrate within platform recommendations, understanding that image quality, resolution, or frame rate may need to change. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded lecture videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the looping stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. No computer or home internet connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos—not a live camera feed—and streams to YouTube.
