Build your iPhone app around the space it has at runtime, not a fixed screen size or a portrait-versus-landscape switch. In SwiftUI, compose views to respond to the space they receive and use size classes for meaningful presentation changes. In UIKit, use Auto Layout and stack views to define flexible relationships. Then test rotation, resized iPad windows, larger text, and localized strings.
Design for available space, not a particular iPhone
A device’s nominal display size is only one factor in how much room your interface has. Orientation changes, iPad multitasking, and window resizing can alter the app’s usable area. Dynamic Type and translated text can change how much space content needs. Apple’s Layout guidance calls for adapting to display sizes, orientation changes, window sizes, and multitasking states.

That is why a landscape layout should not be treated as one universal alternative to portrait. A landscape iPhone, a narrow split-view window, and a wide iPad window can offer very different amounts of space. Make layout decisions from the current environment, and keep core tasks recognizable as the arrangement changes.

Use size classes to identify available room
Horizontal and vertical size classes describe the amount of available space in each dimension. They can be affected by device type, orientation, window configuration, and multitasking state, and may change while the app is running. Apple’s SwiftUI size-class documentation describes compact and regular as indications of available space—not permanent labels for particular devices.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use these values when a real presentation change is helpful, such as changing navigation structure or showing a secondary pane. Do not assume that a given iPhone or orientation always has the same size classes.
Build adaptive layouts in SwiftUI
Start with flexible composition
Arrange content with stacks, grids, and views that can expand or wrap to fit the proposed space. Let the layout system handle ordinary changes in available width before adding device-specific branches.

Branch only for meaningful changes
When the interface needs a larger change, read the size classes from the environment with @Environment(.horizontalSizeClass) and @Environment(.verticalSizeClass). For example, a compact width might call for a single-column presentation, while more available width could make a secondary pane useful. Treat that as a design decision, not a rule tied to a specific model.

Build adaptive layouts in UIKit
Combine stack views and constraints
Use UIStackView to arrange related controls and content when its automatic arrangement fits the design. Use Auto Layout constraints to express the position and size relationships that need more precision. Anchor content to safe areas or layout margins where appropriate so it stays clear of system interface features and screen edges. Apple documents these approaches in UIKit view layout.
Respond to trait changes
UIKit can rerun layout as traits change. For custom reactions, Apple documents automatic trait tracking and registration through UITraitChangeObservable in its trait-change guidance. For new code, do not rely on the deprecated traitCollectionDidChange: as the general trait-change mechanism.

Choose the approach that fits your app
These are implementation paths, not competing products. Keep the architecture your app already uses, then choose how much adaptation the interface needs.
| Approach | Useful when | How adaptation works |
|---|---|---|
| SwiftUI | The app is built with SwiftUI and can use flexible view composition. | The layout system responds to proposed space; size classes can drive larger presentation changes. |
| UIKit | The app is built with UIKit or needs explicit control over layout relationships. | Stack views arrange groups of content, Auto Layout defines constraints, and trait-change APIs support custom reactions. |
Apple’s Interface fundamentals provide broader context for building interfaces across Apple platforms.

Test the states that can change the layout
Test more than one phone in portrait. Exercise valid combinations of width and height, and verify that content remains available when the app is rotated, resized, or asked to display larger text. Apple’s layout guidance covers these sources of variation; the checklist below is a practical way to check them in your own app.
Quick Recap
- Rotate the device and confirm controls, text, and content remain visible and usable.
- Exercise compact and regular width and height combinations rather than relying on one phone and one tablet.
- On iPad, check full-screen and multitasking or window configurations, including narrow and short windows.
- Increase Dynamic Type settings and confirm text can grow without clipping or obscuring essential controls.
- Try longer translated strings and right-to-left layout if the app supports localization.
- Check safe-area placement around system interface features, and verify scrolling or reflow still exposes all content.
- Confirm navigation changes remain familiar and core tasks remain available in each layout.
