To repeat prerecorded videos in a YouTube live broadcast, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add your files to its playlist and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, test the full signal, and keep the computer and network running while you stream. The playlist can repeat; that does not guarantee the broadcast will run forever without interruption.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. OBS’s VLC Video source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and requires VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Video files arranged in the order you want them to play.
- A YouTube channel with access to live streaming, plus the stream connection details shown in Live Control Room.
- Permission to broadcast every video and its audio. Public availability on YouTube does not mean a video is free to rebroadcast.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Prepare the files. Keep the source videos available on the computer while streaming. Check their order and make sure you have the necessary rights to both picture and sound.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast. Add a source and choose VLC Video. If it is unavailable, install VLC and reopen OBS.
- Add the playlist. Add the video files in the desired order. Use shuffle if you want a different playback order rather than a fixed sequence.
- Enable repetition. Leave Loop Playlist enabled; OBS documents it as on by default for VLC Video. The source will repeat the playlist when it reaches the end. OBS Media Sources documentation
- For one video only: use OBS’s built-in Media Source instead, select the file, and turn on its separate Loop option, which is off by default. OBS Media Sources documentation
Check the picture and sound
Arrange the source in the scene so the video fits the canvas as intended. Check OBS’s audio meters while the clip plays. Make sure the intended audio is present and that microphone or desktop audio is not being included accidentally. OBS’s quick-start guide covers scenes, sources, audio checks, and testing. OBS Quick Start Guide
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Set its title, visibility, and other options as appropriate.
- Follow YouTube’s current prompts for encoder connection details. Copy the server or service information and stream key into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Labels and protocol options may change, so use the options currently presented by YouTube and OBS. OBS Studio Overview Guide · YouTube full live production guide
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, chat, or a public tutorial. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s current controls.
- Start the encoder from OBS and check the YouTube preview and stream status before starting the public broadcast.
Test before leaving the stream running
OBS recommends testing settings before a first stream. Start the playlist and verify that the YouTube preview shows the correct picture and sound. Let it play long enough to confirm that files advance in the intended order and that playback returns to the beginning after the final item. Resolve problems before sharing the broadcast link. OBS Quick Start Guide
During the broadcast, the computer running OBS and its network connection must remain available. Check the stream status periodically. Looping is a playback setting, not an uptime guarantee: the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish that a local encoder can run forever, a current maximum broadcast duration, or an archive limit.

Copyright checks for prerecorded live streams
YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
Before going live, confirm you have permission for every video and its audio. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube notes that the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Ask the rights owner about this before the broadcast.

OBS playlist versus YouTube’s HLS playlist
These are different things. The OBS playlist is your sequence of prerecorded videos. YouTube’s HLS documentation describes a protocol for sending a live stream in segments; it notes higher latency than RTMP and specifies HLS segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Those ingestion rules do not configure or control the order of videos in your OBS playlist. For a basic OBS setup, follow the protocol options currently offered by YouTube and OBS rather than changing HLS settings without a specific need. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing: install VLC, then reopen OBS; the source requires VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation
- The playlist stops at the end: check that you added files to VLC Video and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file on Media Source, enable its separate Loop option.
- YouTube has no preview or the encoder is not connected: compare the server or service and stream key in OBS with the current details in Live Control Room. Check YouTube’s stream status and follow its current connection prompts.
- There is no audio or the wrong sound is playing: play the source in OBS and watch the audio meters. Check the source and scene audio settings, including whether unintended microphone or desktop audio is mixed in. OBS Quick Start Guide
- The broadcast is interrupted after third-party content appears: check the rights for both the video and sound. If licensed material is involved, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
