How to Fix Audio and Video Out of Sync on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether the mismatch is a steady offset, drift that grows over time, a delivery problem, or trouble affecting only certain viewers. Then correct the setting at the stage where it starts and verify the result in YouTube playback—not only in OBS preview. A fixed delay can correct a constant offset; it cannot fix timing that keeps changing.

Classify the sync problem before changing settings

Choose a visible event paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. Compare several moments rather than judging one instant, and note when the mismatch appears.

  • Steady offset from the start: the same sound consistently leads or trails its matching image. This points toward a source-level timing correction.
  • Growing mismatch: audio and video begin aligned but separate as time passes. Investigate device timing and buffering; a fixed offset will not stop ongoing drift.
  • Intermittent stutter or dropped frames: check stream connection and bitrate capacity separately from a stable source offset.
  • Only some viewers report it: compare playback on other devices and networks before changing source timing. The problem may be viewer-side buffering.

Where possible, compare a local OBS recording with the delivered YouTube playback. This helps locate whether the mismatch is present before streaming or appears later in delivery or playback; it is a diagnostic approach, not a universal platform-prescribed test.

Correct a steady offset at the affected source

Change only the source that is early. A microphone, camera audio, media source, and capture device can each have different timing, so applying one arbitrary correction to every source can make some of them worse.

Sound comes before the matching picture

Delay the audio source by a measured amount. In OBS, use the sync offset for the affected audio source, adjusting in small increments and repeating the same clap test. The official OBS pages cited here do not specify exact menu directions for audio sync-offset controls, so labels can vary by OBS version and source type.

Picture comes before the matching sound

Apply OBS’s Render Delay filter to the relevant video source. OBS documents it as delaying source rendering and notes its use for syncing a webcam image to microphone audio. Increase the delay by the measured discrepancy, then retest.

Investigate drift that grows over time

If the mismatch changes during a stream, check whether audio and video come from separate devices, whether the problem also appears in a local recording, and whether a capture device is buffering. Test one change at a time and keep the stream running long enough to see whether the original drift returns.

Check audio device timestamps in OBS

OBS documents a Windows-only Use Device Timestamps option for audio input/output capture. It attempts to use device timing to prevent desynchronization, and the cited OBS guide says its default is Off. Test it with the specific device rather than enabling it blindly; compare a sustained recording and YouTube playback before and after.

Test capture-device buffering

OBS’s Video Capture Sources guidance explains that disabling buffering may help if a device is delayed, while enabling buffering may help if playback stutters. Available settings and behavior vary by source type and operating system. Change one buffering setting at a time: reducing delay can expose stutter on a device that needs buffering.

Separate source sync from connection and viewer buffering

Check OBS and YouTube stream health

Look at OBS dropped-frame counters and the YouTube stream-health indicators. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection stability or bitrate-capacity issue; use its connection troubleshooting guidance if dropped frames are present. YouTube’s LiveStream resource configuration guidance describes health messages for stream configuration issues.

Network congestion can affect delivery and playback. If a single viewer has trouble while playback is aligned for others, investigate that viewer’s network, device, and player before changing the source offset. That comparison is a useful diagnostic inference, not a guarantee that every viewer-specific problem is caused by their connection.

Understand YouTube latency choices

YouTube latency is the delay between capture and viewer playback; it is not the same as audio being consistently early or late relative to its picture. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely. YouTube positions normal latency for non-interactive streams and says it provides the highest quality setting in terms of lower viewer buffering. Webcam and mobile streams do not offer latency selection in the same way. See YouTube’s live-streaming latency guidance.

Changing latency can affect end-to-end delay and buffering robustness, but it is not a direct cure for a source where the sound consistently leads or trails the matching image.

Verify the fix on a representative test

  1. Set up a private or unlisted test, if your channel setup permits. Use the same camera, microphone, capture card, media, frame rate, and scene composition as the continuous stream.
  2. Include motion and sound. YouTube recommends tests with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. A clap is a simple sync marker; include other representative content if the stream uses different sources.
  3. Watch the delivered YouTube playback. Check stream health and compare playback with a local OBS recording where available. Preview alone cannot confirm what viewers receive.
  4. Run the test long enough to expose the failure. OBS recommends testing before the first stream; for a 24/7 stream, extend the test to include the time when drift normally appears. That duration is practical advice, not a published OBS or YouTube requirement.
  5. Record the result. Note the offset, source changed, test duration, and whether YouTube playback stayed aligned. Avoid changing offset, latency, buffering, and bitrate together, or it will be difficult to tell which change helped.

For setup checks beyond sync, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends monitoring stream health and testing with representative audio and movement.

  • Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
