The most reliable approach is to filter interruptions rather than silence your entire phone. Use Android’s Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode to allow the people, conversations, apps, alarms and reminders that matter. Use Digital Wellbeing Focus mode to pause attention-hungry apps, and keep notification history available as a safety net. Because menu names and features differ by Android version, phone maker and app, verify the finished setup with real calls, messages and alarms on your own device.
Which Android control should you use?
Android has several controls that solve different parts of the distraction problem. Do Not Disturb and Modes govern interruptions across the phone. Focus mode governs whether selected apps can be used and whether they can notify you. Individual app and conversation settings provide narrower control.

| Control | Scope | What it suppresses | What can pass through | Automation and recovery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do Not Disturb | Most of the device | Configured sounds, vibrations, pop-ups and other interruptions | People, calls, conversations, apps, alarms, reminders, calendar events and other selected categories | Manual duration or a schedule; exact options vary by device |
| Custom Mode | A separate device-wide rule set, such as work, study or sleep | The categories you block in that mode | The exceptions you define for that mode | Can be scheduled; custom Modes instructions generally apply to Android 14 and later |
| Focus mode | Selected apps | Pauses those apps, preventing their use and their notifications while active | Apps you did not select, plus anything delivered through another channel | Manual start, schedule or a temporary Take a break |
| Conversation controls | One supported messaging conversation | The conversation’s ordinary notification behavior | An Important conversation can notify even while Do Not Disturb is on | Changed from the conversation notification; support depends on the messaging app |
| App notification settings | One app or notification category | That app or category’s notifications | Categories you leave enabled | Usually persistent until you change the setting |
| Notification history | Recently dismissed and snoozed notifications | Nothing; it is a record rather than a filter | Shows the day’s history when the device supports and has enabled it | Useful for recovery after an alert is dismissed |
| Notification cooldown | Bursts of incoming notifications | Reduces repeated sound and pop-up interruptions | Calls, alarms, priority conversations and emergency alerts are listed by Google as exceptions | Availability and wording vary by device |
A practical setup normally combines one device-wide Mode with Focus mode and a few app or conversation exceptions. Do not use Focus mode to pause an app that is your only source of an urgent alert.

Set up Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode
1. Open the interruption controls
- Open Settings.
- Look for Modes or Do Not Disturb. On supported versions, Google’s path is Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Use Do Not Disturb for one general quiet rule, or create a custom Mode for a distinct context such as work, study, sleep or commuting.
If you cannot find Modes, search Settings for “Do Not Disturb” or “notification filters.” The same feature may be placed under Sound, Notifications or a manufacturer-specific menu. Some Mode instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and not every phone exposes every option.

2. Configure notification filters
Open the mode’s Notification filters (the label can differ) and decide each category separately:
- People and calls: allow everyone, selected contacts, starred contacts or nobody, depending on what your phone offers.
- Conversations: allow selected conversations rather than opening an entire messaging app to every chat.
- Apps: allow only apps whose alerts are time-sensitive for you.
- Alarms and other interruptions: keep alarms enabled when you must wake or attend something.
- Reminders and calendar events: allow them when missing a scheduled obligation is worse than the interruption.
Choose the narrowest exception that solves the problem. Allowing an entire chat app can reintroduce group-chat noise; allowing one Important conversation is more selective. Critical system notifications, including security-related alerts, may still appear even when other categories are blocked.
3. Decide how calls should behave
If you need to be reachable but do not want every call to ring, allow selected people or enable repeat callers if your phone provides that rule. Google documents repeat callers as two calls from the same person within 15 minutes. This is a setting rule, not a guarantee that every phone or carrier presents it identically. Consider whether unknown callers, work contacts or emergency caregivers require a separate exception.
4. Set a schedule or a temporary duration
For predictable quiet periods, open the mode’s schedule controls and set the days and times. Examples include a study block on weekday afternoons or a sleep period every night. When turning Do Not Disturb on manually, choose a duration if your device offers one, such as “until you turn it off” or a fixed number of hours. A fixed duration reduces the risk of leaving the phone muted after the quiet period ends.

Review schedules after travel, shift changes and daylight-saving transitions. A schedule that looks correct can still run at an unexpected local time if the phone’s time zone is changed.
Let one important conversation through
Allowing a whole messaging app is often broader than necessary. On a supported app:
- Wait for a notification from the conversation.
- Touch and hold that notification.
- Choose the conversation’s notification level, then select Important, Default or Silent as appropriate.
Google says an Important conversation can notify even when Do Not Disturb is active. Not every messaging app exposes Android conversation controls, and some apps manage notification priority inside their own settings. If the Important option is absent, use the app’s own notification categories or allow the app in the Mode, recognizing that this may permit more conversations than you want.

Pause distracting apps with Focus mode
Choose apps to pause
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode.
- Select the apps that pull you into unplanned checking, such as social feeds, games, shopping or video apps.
- Start Focus mode manually or create a schedule.
While Focus mode is active, selected apps are paused: you generally cannot use them, and their notifications are blocked. This is stronger than muting sounds because it removes the visual prompt and the easy path into the app. It also means you must not select an app that carries an urgent alert unless that alert is reliably duplicated by calls, text messages, email or another channel.

Use Take a break deliberately
When you need one paused app briefly, use Take a break rather than disabling the entire plan. Choose the shortest available break that covers the task, then let Focus mode resume automatically. A break is useful for checking a one-time message or completing a transaction without abandoning the schedule.
Separate app access from critical alerts
Focus mode cannot distinguish every notification category inside a paused app. If an app mixes urgent and distracting alerts, first look for separate categories in Settings > Notifications > App notifications or inside the app itself. If no reliable split exists, leave the app out of Focus mode and use its notification categories, a custom Mode, or a different delivery channel for urgent events.
Use app-level controls for fine tuning
Device-wide Modes are efficient for broad quiet periods; app-level settings handle exceptions that do not justify changing the entire mode.
Turn off noisy categories, not necessarily the whole app
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select an app and review its categories. Disable marketing, recommendation, livestream or “miscellaneous” categories while keeping direct messages, security warnings or account activity if those matter. Category names are chosen by the app, so read their descriptions and revisit them after an app update.

Use Silent for information you want to retain
A Silent notification can remain in the notification shade without making a sound or appearing as an intrusive pop-up, depending on the device. This is useful for delivery updates, routine email and low-priority work channels. Silent is not the same as blocked: it can still invite checking, so combine it with Focus mode when the visual cue itself is distracting.
Consider app timers and Bedtime mode
Digital Wellbeing also includes app timers and Bedtime mode on supported devices. An app timer limits how long an app can be used; Bedtime mode can reduce nighttime interruptions and change the screen experience. These controls address duration and sleep routines rather than replacing the people, conversation and alarm filters in Do Not Disturb. Check their behavior on your phone before relying on them for an urgent alert.

Enable notification history before you need it
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Look for Notification history.
- Enable it if available.
When supported and enabled, history helps you find recently dismissed or snoozed alerts and review the day’s notification history. It does not restore an alert that an app never generated, and it is not available in the same way on every Android phone. Enable it during setup rather than after an important notification has already disappeared.
Reduce bursts with notification cooldown
If a busy group chat or a batch of app updates causes repeated sounds and pop-ups, look in notification settings for Notification cooldown. Google describes it as reducing sound and pop-up interruptions during a burst. Google lists calls, alarms, priority conversations and emergency alerts as exceptions. Because the control and its exceptions can vary by device, test it with the alert types you consider critical.
Best Value
Build a setup for common situations
Focused work or study
- Create a custom work or study Mode.
- Allow calls from a short list of people and, if appropriate, repeat callers.
- Allow the calendar and alarm categories needed for the session.
- Mark a genuinely urgent conversation Important rather than allowing every message from its app.
- Use Focus mode to pause feed-based and entertainment apps for the same time window.
- Set a fixed end time so normal notifications resume automatically.
Sleep
- Schedule a nighttime Mode or Do Not Disturb period.
- Keep alarms enabled and allow only people who may need to wake you.
- Decide explicitly whether repeat callers should break through.
- Use Bedtime mode if your phone supports it, but verify that alarms and emergency alerts remain available.
- Do not pause an emergency or health app in Focus mode unless another dependable alert path exists.
Driving or commuting
- Use a short manual duration or a context-based schedule if your device offers one.
- Allow navigation, emergency and selected-call alerts while suppressing promotional and social notifications.
- Keep the phone out of reach; filtering notifications does not make handling the device while driving safe.
Test the configuration on the actual phone
Android’s settings vary by manufacturer, version and app. A rule that appears correct in a menu is not enough; verify the behavior you depend on.
- Activate the Mode or Do Not Disturb rule.
- Place a call from an allowed person and, separately, from a blocked or unlisted number.
- Send a message through the conversation you marked Important and through an ordinary conversation.
- Trigger or wait for a calendar reminder and an alarm.
- Generate a notification from every app you allowed and confirm that a paused Focus-mode app cannot notify or open.
- Dismiss one test notification and confirm it appears in Notification history if that feature is enabled.
- Send two calls from the same person within 15 minutes if you enabled repeat callers, then confirm the rule behaves as expected.
Perform this test after major Android updates, switching phone makers, changing default messaging apps or installing an app that handles calls and messages. If a notification is safety-critical, maintain a second channel rather than depending on one unverified exception.
Troubleshoot common failures
An allowed person still does not get through
- Check that the contact is stored under the number or account the caller actually uses.
- Review both the Mode’s people filter and the phone app’s own blocked-number settings.
- Check whether the message is an Important conversation or merely an allowed app.
- Confirm the phone is not in Focus mode with the relevant messaging or calling app paused.
- Run the test again while the Mode is visibly active; some settings apply only to a particular mode.
An unwanted app still interrupts
- Inspect every notification category for that app, including categories created after an update.
- Check whether the alert is a critical system notification that Android allows to appear.
- Confirm the app is included in the active Focus-mode list if you need its access and notifications paused.
- Look for a second app producing the same alert, such as a browser, companion app or email client.
You missed something important
- Open Notification history immediately if it was enabled.
- Check whether the notification was dismissed, snoozed, silently delivered or never generated by the app.
- Review the active Mode, its schedule and its notification filters.
- Move the alert to a supported Important conversation or add the responsible app only if that broader exception is acceptable.
- For recurring critical alerts, add a second delivery method and repeat the real-world test.
Know the limits of Android’s notification controls
There is no single universal Android menu. Settings can differ by Android release, phone manufacturer, region and app. Modes and some of their instructions are associated with Android 14 and later, while older phones may expose only Do Not Disturb or simpler app controls. A messaging app may not support conversation levels, and a device may omit notification history or cooldown.

Filtering also cannot judge urgency perfectly. A routine-looking message may be important to you, while a system alert may bypass ordinary filters. Treat the settings as rules you design, not as an intelligent guarantee. Keep alarms, emergency channels and any required work alert on a path you have personally verified.
Quick Recap
A maintenance checklist
- Review allowed people and apps once a month.
- Remove temporary exceptions after a project, trip or event ends.
- Check schedules when your work hours, time zone or sleep pattern changes.
- Revisit app categories after major app updates.
- Keep Notification history enabled if your device provides it and you rely on recovery.
- Repeat the call, message, alarm and calendar tests after an Android upgrade or phone migration.
- Use the narrowest control that works: one conversation before an entire app, one app before the whole device, and a fixed duration before an indefinite mute.
