YouTube’s automatic live captions are a simpler fallback for eligible English-language streams, but they need normal latency and should be monitored for errors. Plan captions for the replay separately; live automatic captions do not carry over to the video-on-demand copy.
Choose how captions will reach YouTube
YouTube’s live-caption guidance puts the key requirement plainly: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” You can do that in one of three ways. The right choice depends on language, accuracy needs, encoder setup, and whether you can operate a separate caption feed.

| Method | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic live captions | An eligible English-language stream where captions can be monitored and corrected on the replay | Eligibility and rollout-limited; English only; requires normal latency; speech recognition can make mistakes |
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 | A caption source already integrated with the encoder or outgoing video workflow | Requires the encoder to supply embedded captions; YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow |
| Separate HTTP caption feed | A captioning provider or software that sends captions independently of the video encoder | Requires a separate connection to the stream’s signed Captions Ingestion URL and operational monitoring |
For automatic captions, eligibility and language support are not guaranteed. For human-produced captions, check the caption provider’s supported languages, workflow, and compatibility with your live setup before committing. YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as software examples; confirm current vendor support and versions directly.

Set up automatic live captions, if the option is available
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and set up the stream.
- Turn on closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and select the video language. YouTube’s current help page says automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.
- Use normal latency. YouTube says automatic live captions require it; the option may not appear for an ineligible channel or a stream using low or ultra-low latency.
- Start the stream and watch the captions in the live player. Check names, uncommon terms, lyrics, and any overlapping speech rather than assuming the transcript is accurate.
Audio quality, simultaneous speakers, and multilingual speech can affect recognition. YouTube warns that automatic speech recognition may misrepresent speech and encourages reviewing automatically generated captions. If captions are missing or too error-prone, use an embedded or separate caption feed instead.

Send captions embedded in the stream
- In the stream setup, enable closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to place EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video.
- Keep the encoder system clock accurate, then test that captions appear in YouTube’s live player before relying on the setup.
- Check the live player after startup and after any encoder reconnect, restart, loop transition, or handoff.
YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow, even though the caption standard can carry more. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not promise that a caption feed will continue seamlessly through restarts or handoffs, so test the actual encoder and caption system you use.
Send a separate caption feed over HTTP
- In the stream setup, enable closed captions and select the separate caption-feed option.
- Copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL and enter it in your captioning software or provider’s workflow.
- Confirm that the software sends captions to that URL using HTTP POST and that the captions appear in the live player.
- Use a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for YouTube’s documented captioned-event workflow, and keep the system clock accurate.
- Verify the feed again after startup and after any planned restart, encoder handoff, or stream-entry-point change.
YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. It does not document guaranteed caption-feed continuity after a restart or change of entry point. Ask your caption provider how its service handles those events and test the complete setup before depending on uninterrupted captions.

Choose a caption-compatible latency
For an always-on story stream without live audience interaction, normal latency is generally the practical choice when captions matter. YouTube says automatic live captions require normal latency, and its Live Streaming API states that ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. YouTube describes lower latency as reducing the read-ahead buffer while increasing the likelihood of buffering, so weigh that trade-off against the need for captions.
Check YouTube’s current guidance before changing latency or encoder settings: Understand live streaming latency and LiveBroadcasts | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Prepare captions for the replay separately
Live automatic captions are not retained on the finished video. YouTube generates a separate set of automatic captions for the VOD, and those captions may differ from the live version. Inspect the replay rather than assuming live caption coverage has carried over.
- After the stream ends, open the video’s subtitle workflow in YouTube Studio.
- Upload a timed caption file, use auto-sync with a transcript, or type captions manually.
- Review the result against the audio, including names, lyrics, and meaningful non-speech sounds such as applause or thunder.
- Correct errors and confirm that the captions are available on the published replay.
See YouTube’s instructions for adding subtitles and captions.

Test and monitor an always-on stream
Before launch, test representative speech and audio, confirm captions in the live player, and check stream health. During operation, inspect the feed after starts, reconnects, scheduled stream rotations, content changes, and caption-provider handoffs. These checks are especially important for a stream that runs continuously: YouTube’s documentation does not establish that caption delivery resumes seamlessly after those events.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance alongside the instructions for your encoder and caption service. If caption continuity is critical, arrange an operational test with the provider before launch rather than treating an untested restart as safe.

Troubleshoot missing or unreliable captions
- The automatic-caption option is missing: Check channel eligibility and rollout availability, confirm the stream is set to normal latency, and verify that English is the selected language. Use an embedded or HTTP caption workflow if automatic captions are unavailable.
- Automatic captions appear inaccurate: Check for clean, clear audio and reduce overlapping speech where possible. Automatic recognition can mishear speech; monitor it live and correct the replay captions afterward.
- Embedded captions do not appear: Confirm that closed captions and Embedded 608/708 are selected in stream setup, and that the encoder is actually sending embedded captions. Test the complete route in the live player.
- The HTTP feed is not reaching YouTube: Recheck the signed Captions Ingestion URL and the caption software’s connection and HTTP POST configuration. Confirm that no second caption feed is competing for the same stream entry point.
- Captions stop after a restart or rotation: Reconnect or reconfigure the caption source as required by its provider, then verify the feed in the live player. Continuity across restarts is not guaranteed by the reviewed YouTube instructions.
- The replay has no captions or different captions: Treat VOD captions as a separate task. Use YouTube Studio to add or correct a caption track after the broadcast.
