To make an All the Mods 6 (ATM6) server, use the matching ATM6 server pack for Minecraft 1.16.5, run it with 64-bit Java 11, and allocate at least 6 GB of memory. Download ATM6-1.9.2-server.zip from the ATM6 project’s CurseForge Files page, extract it into a clean folder, run the supplied startup script once, accept Mojang’s EULA, then configure networking and invite players running the identical pack release.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
What you need before installing ATM6
All the Mods 6 is a Forge modpack built for Minecraft 1.16.5. A dedicated server is not created from the client download: it needs the separate server archive supplied for the same pack release. The currently listed main release in the ATM6 project is AllTheMods 6-1.9.2, whose matching server archive is ATM6-1.9.2-server.zip.

- A computer or hosted instance that can stay online while people play.
- A 64-bit Java installation, preferably JDK 11.
- At least 6 GB of physical memory available for the server, with additional memory reserved for the operating system.
- The exact same ATM6 release and Forge profile installed on every client.
- Permission to open or forward the Minecraft port if players will connect over the Internet.
ATM6’s maintainers say JDK versions 8 through 14 should work, while Java 11 is the recommended choice. The general All The Mods compatibility table maps Minecraft 1.16 to Java 8 or Java 11. Avoid letting a newer default such as Java 17 or Java 21 select itself for this 1.16.5 installation unless you have verified compatibility with the specific pack and Forge build.
Choose one pack release and keep every installation identical
Version mismatches are the most common reason a modded server refuses a connection. Decide which release your group will use before downloading anything. For the current main ATM6 release listed by the project, use the following set:
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

| Modpack | AllThe Mods 6-1.9.2 | The server and clients must contain the same mods and configuration. |
| Minecraft | 1.16.5 | ATM6 and its Forge loader target this Minecraft version. |

This package contains the dedicated-server files and scripts. |
| Loader | Forge supplied by the pack | Installing a different Forge build can create missing-mod or protocol errors. |
Open the ATM6 project’s Files page on CurseForge and select the release your players installed. Download the server file attached to that same release. Do not substitute the client ZIP, an older server archive, or files copied from another ATM6 version. Keep the downloaded ZIP until the server is working so you can re-extract a clean copy if a file is accidentally changed.
Install Java 11 and verify which runtime the server will use
Check the current Java version
Open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -version
The output should identify a 64-bit Java 11 runtime. The exact vendor name can differ; the important parts are the major version and 64-bit architecture. If the command is not found, install a 64-bit Java 11 JDK and reopen the terminal so the updated PATH is loaded.

Operating systems often retain several Java versions. In that situation, the startup script may resolve the wrong executable even though Java 11 is installed. You can remove an unwanted default or edit the supplied script so its java command is replaced with the full path to the Java 11 executable. Keep the path quoted when it contains spaces, for example:
"C:PathToJavajdk-11binjava.exe" -Xms6G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
The exact JAR name and arguments should remain those provided by the ATM6 server package. The example illustrates only how to force a particular Java executable; do not invent a replacement JAR name if the pack script already specifies one.

Prepare a clean server directory
Windows
- Create a dedicated folder such as
C:MinecraftATM6-1.9.2. - Move the downloaded
ATM6-1.9.2-server.zipinto that folder. - Extract every file and subfolder from the archive directly into the server folder. The supplied
startserver.batshould be in the folder where you intend to run it, not buried inside an extra nested ZIP directory. - Keep the folder outside OneDrive, Dropbox, or another continuously synchronized location. Sync tools can lock region, configuration, or log files while Forge is writing them.
Linux or another Unix-like system
- Create a directory owned by the account that will run the server, for example
~/servers/atm6-1.9.2. - Copy the server ZIP into that directory and extract it with your distribution’s archive utility.
- Ensure the supplied shell startup script is executable, using your normal file-permission method if necessary.
- Run the script from inside the extracted directory so relative paths resolve to the pack’s libraries, configs, and JAR files.
Do not combine an extraction with files left over from another ATM6 release. If you are changing versions, create a new directory or remove the old contents first and then extract the complete matching archive.
Start the server once and accept the EULA
First launch
- On Windows, double-click the supplied
startserver.bat. On Linux, execute the supplied shell script from the server directory. - Allow the installer and Forge initialization to run without closing the terminal. The first launch commonly takes three to five minutes, and a heavily loaded machine can take longer.
- The process will create files and normally stop or pause when it needs a EULA decision. Look for the generated
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, read Mojang’s EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to its terms. Save the file. - Run the same startup script again. Wait until Forge reports that the server has fully loaded and is ready for connections.
ATM6 documentation recommends closing the server cleanly after this first successful load before changing configuration. In the server console, use the normal stop command and wait for the process to exit; closing the window abruptly can leave world or region files in an inconsistent state.
Set memory for the number of players
ATM6 is a large modpack, so memory allocation affects startup reliability and garbage-collection pauses. The project’s server guide calls for at least 6 GB or more allocated RAM. The ATM6 wiki states that its default server setting is 5 GB, which it considers suitable for two to three players, and that 10 GB is typically enough for six to eight players. Those are maintainer guidelines rather than independent laboratory benchmarks.
| Expected use | Starting allocation | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Small private world | 6 GB | Meets the general ATM server requirement; leave additional memory for the operating system. |
| Two to three players | 5 GB default | The ATM6 wiki describes this default as generally suitable, but 6 GB is the safer minimum for a new setup. |
| Six to eight players | Up to 10 GB | The wiki says this is typically about the most needed; CPU performance may become the bottleneck. |
Change the values in the startup script
Open the supplied startup script in a text editor and locate its memory variables, commonly named MIN_RAM and MAX_RAM. Set both to the same value unless you have a specific reason to let the heap grow, for example:
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
MIN_RAM=6G
MAX_RAM=6G
Use the variable names and syntax already present in your pack’s script. Do not allocate all physical RAM: the operating system, file cache, Java overhead, and other services still need headroom. If the computer has 8 GB total, assigning 8 GB to Java can make the entire machine unresponsive. A host advertised with 10 GB should also have additional resources beyond the amount reserved for the Minecraft process.
Configure the server after the first successful load
- Stop the fully loaded server with the console’s
stopcommand. - Back up the newly created world and configuration folders before making broad changes.
- Edit
server.propertiesfor settings such as difficulty, game mode, view distance, and whitelist behavior. - Change pack-specific options only in the configuration files documented by ATM6 or by the relevant mod. Make one logical change at a time so a startup failure is easy to isolate.
- Start the server again and watch the console for Forge or mod errors before allowing players to join.
Do not change server-ip or server-port casually
The ATM6 wiki specifically warns that many generic guides tell users to edit server-ip or server-port, but that these fields usually do not need changing and an incorrect value can prevent startup. Leave them at their defaults unless your network design requires a different binding and you understand the address being assigned. For most home installations, the important external step is forwarding the listening port on the router to the computer running the server, not entering a public address into server-ip.

Local network
Players on the same home network can usually connect to the server computer’s private IPv4 address. The host firewall must permit Java or the server process to accept inbound connections on the configured Minecraft port. Give players the local address only; a public address is unnecessary for devices on the same LAN.
Internet play from home
- Give the server computer a stable private address, either through a DHCP reservation or your operating system’s network settings.
- Allow the Java/server process through the host firewall.
- Forward the Minecraft listening port on the router to that private address, following your router and Internet provider’s documentation.
- Check whether your provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections. If it does, ordinary port forwarding may not work.
- Share the reachable public address and port with trusted players, and enable a whitelist before opening a long-running world to strangers.
Never expose administrative console access or unrelated services just to make Minecraft reachable. If your network cannot accept inbound traffic, a hosted server or a secure private networking solution may be more practical than repeatedly changing server.properties.

Run ATM6 on a hosted machine
A hosted instance follows the same pack process as a self-hosted computer: choose one ATM6 release, upload the complete extracted server files, run the provider’s Forge-compatible startup command, accept the EULA, and allocate enough memory. The ATM server guide explicitly instructs users of third-party hosts to upload all extracted files rather than only a JAR.
Recommended Free Tools
Before paying for or provisioning a server, verify all of the following with the provider:
- Support for Minecraft 1.16.5 and custom Forge server files.
- A Java 11 runtime, or a documented way to select Java 11 for this instance.
- At least 6 GB of assignable RAM, with a practical path to 10 GB if your group grows.
- FTP, SFTP, file-manager, or equivalent access for uploading the extracted archive.
- A control panel that lets you set the correct working directory and startup command.
- Backups or downloadable world files if you need to recover from a failed configuration change.
Some hosts provide an installer for popular modpacks. If you use one, confirm that it installs the same ATM6 release your players have, rather than silently selecting a newer or older profile. When an installer is unavailable, upload the archive’s extracted contents and use the host’s documented Forge JAR and startup settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the client installations match
Every player should install the same ATM6 release shown in the server directory name and use the Forge profile supplied for Minecraft 1.16.5. A client with a different mod list, configuration, or Forge build can be rejected before joining the world. Ask players to update or downgrade deliberately instead of copying individual mods into an otherwise unrelated profile.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
If one player can join while another cannot, compare the exact pack version first. Then compare the Forge loader version, Java runtime used by the client, and any locally edited configuration files. Server logs and the client’s latest log normally identify the first missing mod or version mismatch; fix that first error rather than chasing later cascading messages.
Troubleshooting common ATM6 server failures
“Java not found” or module errors
- Run
java -versionin the same account and environment that launches the server. - Confirm the result is 64-bit Java 11, not an accidental Java 17 or Java 21 selection.
- Point the startup script directly to the Java 11 executable if several versions are installed.
- Reopen the terminal or restart the control panel after changing PATH or Java-selection settings.
The server stops immediately
- Check that every file from the server ZIP was extracted and that the script is being run from its own directory.
- Open
eula.txtand verify thateula=truewas saved only after accepting the EULA. - Read the first error in the console or log; later stack traces may only be consequences.
- If the directory contains leftovers from another release, create a fresh directory and extract the correct server archive again.
Out-of-memory errors or severe lag
- Confirm the script is actually using the intended
MIN_RAMandMAX_RAMvalues. - Move from the 5 GB default to at least 6 GB when physical memory allows it.
- For a group of six to eight players, test up to 10 GB while retaining RAM for the operating system.
- Watch CPU usage as well as memory. The ATM6 wiki notes that CPU can become the bottleneck around the six-to-eight-player range.
- Reduce simultaneous heavy activity and review server view-distance settings before assigning more memory than the machine can safely provide.
Players cannot join
- Verify that the client and server use the identical ATM6 release and Forge profile.
- For local players, use the server computer’s private address; for remote players, use the public address and forwarded port.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding rule.
- Leave
server-ipunchanged unless you deliberately need a specific network interface. - Compare the server and client logs for a missing mod, mismatched version, authentication failure, or rejected configuration.
The world appears damaged after a crash
Stop the process cleanly if it is still running, make a copy of the world directory, and restore the most recent known-good backup before experimenting. Do not delete region files or configuration folders without a backup: those files contain world and mod data that may not be reproducible.
Self-hosting versus a hosted instance
| Consideration | Self-hosted computer | Hosted instance |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Complete access to scripts, files, backups, and operating-system settings. | Access depends on the provider’s panel and file-transfer tools. |
| Availability | The computer and home Internet connection must remain on. | The provider keeps the machine online according to its service terms. |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, port forwarding, and provider restrictions. | The provider normally supplies a reachable address and port. |
| Maintenance | You perform Java updates, backups, monitoring, and recovery. | The provider may simplify those tasks but you still manage pack files and worlds. |
| Scaling | Upgrade your own hardware or memory. | Increase the assigned plan or instance resources if available. |
Choose self-hosting when you already have a reliable machine and are comfortable maintaining a network service. Choose hosting when continuous availability, simpler networking, or separation from your personal computer matters more than direct hardware control. In both cases, the ATM6-specific requirements remain the same: matching 1.16.5 files, Java 11, a complete server extraction, and enough available RAM.
Quick Recap
A repeatable launch checklist
- Selected one ATM6 release for the entire group.
- Downloaded that release’s server ZIP rather than its client archive.
- Extracted the archive into a new, dedicated directory.
- Verified 64-bit Java 11 with
java -version. - Confirmed the startup script runs from the extracted directory.
- Allowed the first Forge initialization to finish.
- Accepted the EULA by setting
eula=trueonly after reading it. - Set a safe memory allocation, starting at 6 GB and retaining RAM for the operating system.
- Stopped the server cleanly before editing configuration.
- Left
server-ipandserver-portat their defaults unless a documented network requirement says otherwise. - Configured firewall and router rules only for the port players need.
- Tested a client using the exact same ATM6 and Forge versions.
- Backed up the world before major mod, configuration, or Java changes.
