Docker Compose can make a multi-service AI development setup easier to recreate by recording its services and image build instructions in project files. The “four minutes” in the original headline is an author-specific result, not a time Docker guarantees: build duration depends on the project, machine, network, and cache. To make that figure meaningful, record the starting conditions and exactly what the timer includes.
What Compose makes reproducible—and what it does not
A Compose file describes an application’s services and can specify how their images are built. That gives you a repeatable place to define how components fit together, rather than relying on a sequence of undocumented manual setup steps. See Docker’s Compose overview and its Build Specification.

Reproducibility still depends on the project capturing the inputs it needs. Compose cannot establish that an AI environment is complete if essential dependencies, version choices, model files, credentials, or data live outside the documented setup. Those details vary by project; inspect the files and storage arrangement rather than assuming a Compose file contains everything.
Make build inputs and paths explicit
A service’s build context is the directory or repository Docker uses as input when building its image. In common Compose configurations, a relative context path is resolved in relation to the Compose project or file location. That means a project’s directory structure matters: moving a Compose file without its expected source directories can break a build or cause it to use different inputs.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the Compose file, Dockerfiles, source directories, and dependency declarations together in a layout that can be checked into version control. Review ignore rules as well: Docker’s Compose quickstart demonstrates a .dockerignore file that excludes items such as environment files and cache artifacts from the build context. Excluding secrets and irrelevant files reduces accidental exposure and unnecessary build inputs.
For projects using multiple Compose files, remember that later files can add to or override earlier configuration, and paths in that workflow resolve relative to the first Compose file. If you use several files, document the exact invocation and file order so another developer starts the same configuration.

Rebuild after changing the image’s inputs
Docker’s guidance is direct: “If you change a service’s Dockerfile or the contents of its build directory, run docker compose build to rebuild it.” The command is run from the project directory containing the Compose configuration:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesdocker compose build
This rebuilds the configured service images. It is not the same as merely synchronizing application source files into an already-running container, and it does not by itself prove that data or credentials are preserved. Docker documents the command and its options in the docker compose build reference.

Build caching is a performance behavior, not a prerequisite for reproducibility. The build specification includes a no_cache option that disables the builder cache for Dockerfile layers; using it can make builds slower. Do not assume that a reported four-minute rebuild used a cold cache unless that was part of the recorded procedure.
Use Compose Watch for source-code iteration
For development, Compose Watch can apply a different response to file changes. Its Develop specification is available in Compose 2.22.0 and later. A sync action copies selected changes while the existing container continues running; a rebuild action rebuilds the image and recreates the service. See the Compose Develop Specification.
Choose an action based on what changed: use synchronization for files that can be updated safely in the running service, and rebuilding when the change affects the image or requires service recreation. Watch is a development workflow, not a substitute for documenting how to build the environment from its files on a clean start.

Containers can be replaced during rebuilds, so distinguish disposable runtime instances from data that must survive. Databases, downloaded model files, and user configuration may need a volume or another deliberate persistence mechanism. Docker’s quickstart uses a named volume for Redis data; it is an example of the pattern, not a requirement that an AI project use Redis.

Handle secrets separately from ordinary configuration. Docker advises against passing sensitive information through environment variables and points to secrets as the safer mechanism. A host-side .env file can provide values for Compose interpolation, but a value reaches a container only when the service configuration explicitly passes it into the container environment. The distinction is covered in Docker’s guides to setting container environment variables and pre-defined Compose environment variables.
Measure a four-minute rebuild honestly
Docker documentation does not promise a particular rebuild time. If you report four minutes for your setup, present it as your result and define what you timed. Record whether the build began with a warm or empty cache, whether image or model downloads were included, and whether the timer stopped at image build completion or after services were ready for use. Include the machine, Docker Engine and Compose versions, network conditions, and the project revision so readers can judge whether the result is comparable.
A rebuild measurement also differs from a first-time setup on another computer. A clean machine may need to fetch base images or dependencies and retrieve model files or other data that are not stored in the project. State what is already available locally rather than implying that the measured duration covers those downloads.
Make separate copies easier to manage
If developers need simultaneous copies of an environment—for example, separate branches or CI jobs—assign each Compose project a distinct project name. Compose uses project names to isolate resources, and Docker documents the setting in its project name guide. This avoids treating several copies as though they were one shared set of resources.
For production-oriented deployments, Docker also documents using an additional Compose file to adapt a base configuration. The production guide explains that workflow; keep environment-specific overrides and the command used to combine them documented alongside the project.
