Keep that checkpoint separate from durable user memory, and make retries safe: restoring a checkpoint does not guarantee that an external side effect—such as sending a message or charging a payment—happens exactly once.
What the harness needs to keep track of
An agent harness is the execution and state-management layer around a model. It controls the agent loop, exposes tools, carries state between steps, handles persistence and resumption, and makes activity observable. Designing it for recovery starts by distinguishing three kinds of state that have different lifetimes and access needs.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Invocation context: temporary inputs and data needed for the current call. It may be rebuilt rather than retained after the run.
- Resumable execution state: the progress and pending work needed to continue a particular thread or run after an interruption.
- Durable application memory: user preferences, facts, or shared knowledge intended to remain useful across separate interactions.
LangGraph documents this distinction through thread-scoped checkpoints for graph state and an application-defined Store for data that can persist across threads. A transcript, a checkpoint, and a user profile therefore should not be treated as interchangeable records. LangGraph persistence documentation

How should agent state be persisted?
Choose storage that survives the failure you care about
An in-memory saver is useful only when losing state on process replacement is acceptable. LangGraph says its MemorySaver and InMemorySaver keep checkpoints in RAM and lose them when the process restarts. Its persistence documentation names PostgresSaver and SqliteSaver as persistent alternatives. If worker-restart recovery is a requirement, use a durable backend rather than relying on process memory. The choice between a database-backed checkpoint implementation and another persistence approach depends on deployment topology, concurrency, expected state volume, backup and restore practices, and the team’s operational expertise. The cited documentation does not establish a universally best backend or a neutral performance ranking.
Reconnect a run to the right state
Use a stable thread or run identifier so later work can find the correct execution history. LangGraph’s example uses a thread_id; its API reference describes threads as separating checkpointed runs, including in multi-tenant chat applications. The identifier alone is not an authorization mechanism: the application remains responsible for tenant isolation, ownership checks, and access control. LangGraph checkpoint API reference

Keep cross-interaction memory separate
A thread checkpoint answers, “Where can this execution continue?” Durable application memory answers, “What information should remain available across interactions?” LangGraph describes its Store as application-defined cross-thread data, with preferences, facts, and shared knowledge as examples. Define separate retention, update, and access rules for each rather than accumulating all information in a single conversation record. LangGraph persistence documentation
What does a checkpoint make safe to resume?
Make the checkpoint boundary explicit
In LangGraph, a checkpointer saves graph state at each super-step and organizes it by thread. The API reference also describes successful node writes being preserved when another node in the same super-step fails. In that documented runtime, preserving completed node work can avoid rerunning it during recovery. It does not mean every framework uses the same boundary or that all completed work is automatically safe to repeat. Verify the behavior for the framework and version you deploy. Document what is committed before the next action and what a resume operation replays. The relevant unit is not simply “the conversation so far”; it is the work completed, the work still pending, and the effects that may already have reached another system.
Do not confuse recovery with exactly-once side effects
A checkpoint can restore the agent’s recorded state, but it cannot by itself prove whether a remote service received an action just before a worker failed. A resumed run may retry that action. For operations such as sending a message, creating a record, or charging a payment, use idempotency keys, deduplication, or reconciliation when the external system supports them. Design the recovery path around the side effect’s actual guarantees, not an assumption that checkpointing makes it happen once.

Re-authorize work after waits and approvals
For a long wait or human approval, persist enough information to reconstruct what is pending and which decision is being requested. When the run resumes, check identity and permissions again before performing the action; a saved approval context should not silently become permanent authorization. OpenAI’s Agents SDK documentation describes durable-execution integrations for workflows that span waits, retries, or process restarts, including human-in-the-loop work. Plan for checkpoint growth
Checkpoints can accumulate as threads run for a long time. LangGraph warns that this growth can increase latency and storage costs, and describes pruning old checkpoints or applying a retention policy as mitigations. Decide how long execution history should remain available and how deletion works before usage grows. LangGraph persistence documentation
Include lifecycle and security controls
For each store, define who can read and write it, how tenant boundaries are enforced, how backups are restored, and how records are deleted. The cited documentation does not establish universal encryption, compliance, or disaster-recovery guarantees across implementations; check the current official guidance for the backend and runtime you choose.

Record enough correlated activity to understand what the agent decided, what state it saved, and what happened before and after a resume. The OpenAI Agents SDK tracing guide lists generations, tool calls, handoffs, guardrails, and custom events as trace content useful for debugging, visualization, and monitoring. Connect resumed activity to the prior execution with appropriate identifiers, while limiting the data exposed in traces to what operators need. OpenAI Agents SDK tracing guide
Quick Recap
A practical recovery design checklist
- Classify state. Separate transient invocation context, per-thread resumable state, and durable cross-thread application memory.
- Select a persistence boundary. Identify what must survive process replacement, then choose a persistent checkpoint or workflow approach suited to the deployment.
- Assign stable identifiers. Define how a later run finds the right thread or session, and enforce authorization and tenant ownership in the application.
- Specify replay behavior. Document what is committed, what may run again, and how partial progress is represented for the framework version in use.
- Protect external effects. Use idempotency, deduplication, or reconciliation where supported; test failure points around external calls.
- Model waits and approvals. Preserve enough pending-task context to resume, then validate current identity and permissions before acting.
- Set lifecycle controls. Establish retention, pruning, deletion, backup, restore, and access policies for checkpoints and durable memory.
- Instrument recovery. Trace model and tool activity, state transitions, and resumed execution with identifiers operators can correlate.
