You can make an AI application feel faster without weakening its answers by measuring the whole request, finding its slowest step, then testing one change at a time against representative tasks. Track answer quality alongside latency and cost: a quick response that fails the task is not an improvement.
Start with a baseline, not a speed trick
Before changing models, prompts, or infrastructure, assemble a small evaluation set that reflects what people actually ask your system to do. Include routine requests as well as difficult, ambiguous, and failure-prone cases. Run the same set before and after each change.

For each run, record task success or answer quality, end-to-end latency, time to first token, input and output tokens, and cost per successful task. End-to-end latency matters because a model can generate quickly while retrieval, tools, network calls, or post-processing keep the user waiting. OpenAI’s API deployment checklist recommends comparing task success, latency, token counts, and cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Set an acceptable quality threshold before optimizing. A speed gain is useful only if results stay within that threshold, particularly for high-impact requests. There is no universal instrumentation stack or threshold: choose measures that match your application and users.

Find which part of the request is slow
Separate time to first token from total completion time, then inspect the stages that can contribute to each: model generation, retrieval, serial tool or model calls, network round trips, and application-side processing. This tells you whether to change the model, reduce pipeline steps, improve retrieval, or address a non-model delay.
Generation often dominates, but not always. If the model begins quickly and then streams a long answer, output length may be the issue. If there is a long pause before generation begins, retrieval or several sequential calls may be responsible. Measure the actual path rather than assuming the prompt is the bottleneck.
Make fewer calls and generate only what is needed
Shorten unnecessarily long answers
When a task needs a brief answer, ask for a brief answer and avoid generating details the user does not need. Fewer generated tokens can reduce waiting; preserve the content required for the task rather than imposing a blanket short-answer rule.

Routine, deterministic work—such as simple validation or fixed-format transformations—may be better handled by ordinary application code than by an LLM. Where multiple steps must happen in sequence, see whether they can be combined into one model request without damaging quality. Parallelize steps only when they are genuinely independent and can be safely run at the same time.

Trim prompts selectively
Do not spend hours deleting words from a prompt before measuring. OpenAI’s latency optimization guide says cutting 50% of an ordinary prompt may improve latency by only 1–5%; this is a workload-dependent heuristic, not a guarantee. Removing irrelevant retrieved material may still help, but test the effect on both speed and answer quality.
Choose a model that passes your quality gate
Smaller models usually respond faster and cost less, but a smaller model is not automatically good enough for a particular task. Compare candidate models on the same evaluation set, including the hard cases, and check quality, end-to-end latency, time to first token, and cost per successful task—not just the price or speed of one call.
If a smaller model handles routine requests reliably, an application can route those requests to it and escalate difficult or low-confidence cases to a more capable model or human review. AWS describes this as a chain of models in its production architecture guidance. Set routing rules and confidence thresholds from your own evaluations; a model’s confidence signal should not be treated as proof that its answer is correct.
Also compare requirements beyond raw speed: whether answers need current or grounded information, what privacy and retention constraints apply, and what the system does when a model or tool fails. A faster option is not a fit if it cannot meet those requirements.

Use caching only when reuse is safe
Caching can avoid repeating work for recurring prompts or shared prompt prefixes. Prompt caching may reduce input-processing time before generation, but cache behavior depends on the model and request. Check whether requests actually produce cache hits and measure the resulting latency rather than assuming a hit.
OpenAI’s prompt caching documentation says cached input tokens can receive discounts of up to 95%. That figure concerns input-token cost, not a promise of a 95% latency improvement. Google also documents up to 88% lower input-token costs for a specific long-form video workflow using agentic processing; it is not a general response-speed result. See its Gemini API optimization documentation.
Before caching, decide how you will handle freshness, invalidation, and user-specific or sensitive content. Similar-looking requests are not interchangeable if the answer depends on recent information or a particular user’s data. Follow the applicable provider’s behavior and retention terms for the model and API version you use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse retrieval to ground answers, then measure its cost
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) supplies relevant documents or other source material to a model. It can help with domain-specific or changing information, but it adds retrieval and context-processing work; it is not a guarantee of accuracy. Keep retrieved material relevant, and evaluate answer quality and full request latency together.

OpenAI’s LLM accuracy guide includes an example in which RAG reduced accuracy for a particular case. That is a reason to test retrieval settings against your own task, not evidence that RAG generally harms accuracy. A UK Government overview also describes RAG’s grounding role and considerations in its AI Insights: RAG Systems.
Research on METIS, presented at SOSP 2025, reported a 1.64–2.54× reduction in generation latency without sacrificing generation quality across four RAG question-answering datasets, compared with the RAG optimization schemes evaluated. Those results apply to that study’s methods and datasets; they are not an expected gain for every RAG application. See the METIS paper.
Improve perceived speed without claiming faster completion
Streaming can show partial output as it is generated, so a user sees a response sooner. It improves perceived responsiveness but does not, by itself, reduce total compute or make the answer more accurate. AWS covers streaming, caching, and model tiers in its guidance for production generative AI applications.
Roll out changes against the same checks
- Build the evaluation set. Include common, difficult, and failure-prone request types; record baseline task success, latency, time to first token, tokens, and cost per successful task.
- Locate the delay. Break down the request path into generation, retrieval, calls and round trips, and application processing.
- Test a low-risk change. Try shorter outputs, fewer serial steps, safe parallel work, or deterministic code in place of an unnecessary LLM call.
- Compare a smaller model. Route work to it only if it meets your quality threshold; define escalation for hard, uncertain, or high-impact cases.
- Test caching or retrieval changes where relevant. Measure cache hits, freshness, answer quality, and full latency; do not assume reuse or added context is harmless.
- Roll out gradually and monitor. Watch both latency and quality failures, and revert a change if the speed gain comes with unacceptable errors.
For systems you operate yourself, GPU allocation can be one serving variable, particularly in RAG systems, but hardware is not a substitute for profiling. Establish the bottleneck and requirements—model size, throughput, memory, and deployment constraints—before deciding whether a hardware change is appropriate.
