What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Make a thumbnail that communicates the video’s real subject at a glance, export it to YouTube’s current dimensions, then upload it in YouTube Studio. Standard videos use a 16:9 thumbnail; Shorts use a 9:16 recommendation and have a different upload workflow. You do not need paid design software or special equipment.
What makes a useful YouTube thumbnail?
A thumbnail is a quick preview of the video, not a separate promise designed only to attract a click. Decide what the video is about and who it is for, then choose one subject or moment that makes the idea understandable. Make sure the thumbnail and title work together and accurately set expectations. YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips suggest clear, readable design and warn that an overly complicated composition can overwhelm viewers.

- Give the image one clear focal point; consider the rule of thirds when placing it.
- Use descriptive text or branding only when it helps explain the video. Check that any text remains readable when the image is small.
- Reduce the design to thumbnail size and inspect it on more than one screen if practical. Thumbnails can display differently across devices.
- Choose color, type, and imagery for the intended audience. YouTube does not prescribe a universal color, font, or word-count formula.
YouTube says that 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails; the cited tips page does not state a year for that figure, so treat it as YouTube’s reported statistic, not an independently verified current rate.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube’s current general recommendations differ for standard videos and Shorts. The figures below come from its thumbnail upload requirements; follow the upload interface if its details differ for your device or content type.
#1 Best Overall

| Content | Recommended dimensions and ratio | Minimum dimension | Format and file limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels; 16:9 | Minimum width: 640 pixels | JPG or PNG are examples of supported image formats. Desktop upload: up to 50 MB; mobile video-thumbnail upload: up to 2 MB. |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels; 9:16 | Minimum height: 640 pixels | JPG or PNG are examples of supported image formats. Desktop upload: up to 50 MB. The cited help page’s 2 MB mobile limit is for video thumbnails; check the current interface for Shorts. |
These recommendations are not the same as YouTube’s test-specific image threshold: for Test & Compare, YouTube says that if any test image is below 1280 × 720 pixels, experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480. Podcast playlist thumbnail recommendations differ too, including a 1:1 ratio. See the Test & Compare documentation and the upload requirements for those cases. Older advice such as a universal 1280 × 720 target or a universal 2 MB cap does not reflect the distinctions in the current requirements page.
How to make the image
- Write the promise in one sentence. Name the video’s main idea and intended audience. That sentence helps you choose the right image instead of decorating without a clear purpose.
- Choose one visual subject. Use a relevant frame, photo, illustration, or other image that represents what viewers will actually find in the video.
- Arrange for quick recognition. Keep the subject prominent and avoid competing focal points. Add a short label only if it makes the idea clearer.
- Check at small size. Shrink the draft and see whether the subject and any text remain understandable. Adjust the crop or simplify if the image becomes crowded.
- Export in the correct shape. Use 16:9 for a standard video or YouTube’s 9:16 recommendation for a Short, and keep the file within the limit for the upload device.
- Check accuracy and policy. The image should not imply scenes, results, or claims the video does not deliver.
How to upload a custom thumbnail
Standard video: YouTube Studio on desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the video you want to update.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select the exported image.
- Save the change. YouTube says a thumbnail update may take some time to appear.
Your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails. YouTube may also show Get suggestions; it documents Ask Studio suggestions based on a video’s transcript and themes. Availability of interface options can vary, so use the controls shown for your account. See YouTube’s upload instructions.

Shorts: use Studio on a computer
YouTube currently says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. Use the 9:16 recommendation when preparing the image. There is a display caveat: for a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube says an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail may appear on Home, Explore, and subscriptions on mobile, while the custom image can appear on other surfaces. Consult the current upload instructions for the workflow in effect when you upload.
Check the thumbnail against YouTube policy
Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that may lead to rejection and a strike. Its help page says repeat offenses may result in thumbnail privileges being removed for 30 days or account termination; that is YouTube’s stated enforcement guidance, not a prediction that every violation will receive the same outcome. Review the thumbnail policies before uploading.

When and how to test thumbnail alternatives
Eligible creators can use YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare on desktop to compare up to three thumbnails for public long-form videos and podcast episodes. Advanced features must be enabled. The feature is not available for Shorts or for videos that are private, made for kids, or set for mature audiences.
YouTube evaluates watch-time share, not click-through rate alone. Its result may be Winner, Preferred, or None: Preferred means the evidence was not strong enough to name a confident winner, while None means no strong statistical difference was found. Results can take a few days or up to two weeks, and YouTube may hold a small control group out of the experiment. The platform explains its approach this way: “We believe that evaluating winning thumbnails by watch time share will best support creators’ growth.” See the full Test & Compare documentation.

If you compare concepts before uploading, judge each on the same criteria: immediate clarity, fit for the intended audience, readability at small size, accuracy and policy compliance. Where Test & Compare is available, use its result rather than assuming a design wins because it seems more clickable. YouTube says its tests run concurrently, while many third-party services may run sequential comparisons and optimize for click-through rate; results from different methods may not agree or predict performance for another audience or period.

Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
- You cannot see the custom-thumbnail option: verify that the account is verified, then check the correct upload path. For Shorts, YouTube currently directs creators to Studio on a computer.
- The upload is rejected: check the image format, dimensions, ratio, and file size against the requirements for that content type and upload device.
- The image looks cropped or different on mobile: confirm the intended aspect ratio, then preview it in the relevant surfaces. YouTube specifically warns that vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may use an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on certain mobile surfaces.
- The new image has not appeared yet: allow time for the change to show; YouTube says updates may take some time.
- Test & Compare is unavailable: check that the video is public and is a long-form video or podcast episode, that Advanced features are enabled, and that it is not a Short, made for kids, or set for mature audiences.
- A test has no clear winner: None indicates no strong statistical difference; Preferred indicates YouTube did not have enough evidence to call a confident winner. Do not treat either label as proof that one image universally performs best.
Or skip the browser setup
If the thumbnail concept depends on a web page, ScreenshotNeo can capture that page as an image; it is a screenshot API, not a thumbnail-design editor, so you may still need to crop or add text in an image editor. A single GET request returns a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. The API’s parameters include viewport and device options, full-page capture, CSS selectors for capturing one element, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, and image resizing. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

For a page intended as a thumbnail, replace the example URL with a page you have permission to capture and set suitable capture options using the API documentation. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any image editor to make a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. The workflow does not require a particular paid app, camera, tablet, or accessory; use a tool that can export an image to the required dimensions and format.
Can I add a custom thumbnail to a YouTube Short from my phone?
YouTube’s current help instructions say custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
Does YouTube’s thumbnail test choose the image with the highest click-through rate?
No. Test & Compare evaluates watch-time share and may report a preferred option without enough evidence to call it a confident winner.
