For this guide, “website thumbnails” means custom thumbnails for YouTube videos made with browser-based design tools. The right canvas depends on whether you are making a standard video thumbnail or a Shorts thumbnail, and YouTube may display a vertical video’s thumbnail differently across surfaces.
Choose the right YouTube thumbnail size
YouTube Help recommends a 16:9 thumbnail for standard videos and a 9:16 thumbnail for Shorts. It recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts. The stated minimum width for video thumbnails is 640 pixels; for Shorts, the stated minimum height is 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are listed as supported formats. These are the current specifications on YouTube’s Help page; a publication year is not stated. Check YouTube’s thumbnail requirements before exporting if the upload interface rejects your file.

| Thumbnail | Recommended dimensions | Aspect ratio | Stated minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | 640 pixels wide |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | 640 pixels high |
YouTube lists different upload-size limits for standard video thumbnails depending on the device: 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. If an upload fails, check the current interface and Help page for the device you are using.
Expect different displays for vertical videos
YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail may still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. Check how the thumbnail appears on the surfaces your audience uses rather than assuming it will look identical everywhere.

Make a thumbnail with a browser-based editor
- Pick an accurate visual. Start with a clear still from the video, a relevant photo, or a simple graphic. Choose an image that reflects what the video actually covers.
- Open a thumbnail template or blank canvas. Canva documents a YouTube-thumbnail design type and a template-based workflow. Adobe Express offers thumbnail templates, image editing, and a default 1280 × 720 canvas. Both can give you a starting point; review each service’s current interface and plan details. Canva’s YouTube thumbnail workflow and Adobe Express’s thumbnail tool.
- Set the canvas for the format. Use a 16:9 layout for a standard video or 9:16 for a Shorts thumbnail. If the editor’s preset differs from YouTube’s recommended dimensions, create a custom canvas at the relevant recommended size.
- Keep the design easy to read. Use one clear subject and make Hindi text large enough to read when the thumbnail is small. Adobe recommends high contrast, brief text, and keeping important content out of the bottom-left corner, where the video-duration badge appears. This is design guidance, not a YouTube rule or a guarantee of more views.
- Check Hindi text before exporting. Type your intended Hindi wording and inspect the actual letters, spacing, and font in the editor. The reviewed product information does not establish a comprehensive comparison of Hindi-language or font support, so verify the font and rendering in your own account.
- Export and check the file. Save as JPG or PNG, then confirm the dimensions and file size. YouTube’s listed size limits differ between mobile and desktop standard-video thumbnail uploads.
- Upload and preview. In YouTube’s creator workflow, choose the video, open its thumbnail controls, select the custom-thumbnail upload option, and save. The exact interface labels can change; consult YouTube Help if the controls differ. Preview the result on relevant YouTube surfaces, particularly for vertical videos.
Follow YouTube’s thumbnail rules
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube Help gives nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, and violence as examples of disallowed content. Consult the current thumbnail policy and requirements for the complete rules.

If your task is to capture a webpage as an image rather than design a YouTube thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below saves a screenshot of a webpage; it is not a thumbnail editor and does not replace the design-and-upload steps above. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

YouTube’s Help page gives technical requirements and display behavior, not a promised click-through rate or view increase. A thumbnail should accurately represent the video and remain legible at small sizes, but no particular style can be said from these sources to improve performance. Review how your own design renders and make changes based on your channel’s needs.
