There is no universal YouTube setting that automatically reopens the last study stream after a TV or streaming device reboots. You can configure some devices to launch YouTube or a browser at startup, but YouTube’s autoplay feature is for what plays after a video ends—not for recovering playback after power loss. Set up boot launch on your device, then test whether YouTube returns to the right video and position.
What YouTube will—and won’t—resume
YouTube’s autoplay setting controls whether another related video starts after the current one ends. It is not a boot-recovery feature, and YouTube notes that autoplay settings can differ by device. See YouTube’s autoplay guidance.

For a partially watched on-demand video, signed-in viewers may see a progress bar. YouTube says that when you select a partially watched video, it will “usually resume from where you left off.” That is a qualified aid for resuming after you select the video, not a promise that YouTube will relaunch it after a reboot; the help page also does not settle behavior for every livestream. Clearing watch history clears progress bars. Details are in YouTube’s video progress bar guidance.

Try the TV or streaming device you already have
- Check startup and power-recovery settings. Look in the device’s settings for options that restore power or launch an app after restart. Menu names and capabilities vary by make, model, and operating system, so consult the device maker’s instructions. Power restoration alone does not restore YouTube’s playback state.
- Check whether YouTube can open automatically. If the device offers an app-at-startup option, select YouTube. If it does not, there may be no supported way on that model to launch the app automatically.
- Sign in and check progress for an uploaded video. After a restart, open the video from History or the device’s continue-watching interface and see whether it resumes where expected. The result depends on the video and account state; YouTube says progress usually resumes when a partially watched video is selected, not that it will start automatically.
- Run a cold-reboot test. Restart the device, allow time for it to connect to the network, and observe whether YouTube opens, whether the intended video is selected, and whether playback begins without input. Repeat with the actual study content. Do not assume a setting has solved the problem until this full sequence works on your hardware.
Use a computer or Raspberry Pi to open a page at boot
A computer or Raspberry Pi configured as a browser kiosk can be set to open a chosen YouTube URL during startup. Raspberry Pi’s boot behaviour documentation and configuration documentation cover boot and login configuration. The community pi-kiosk project describes launching Chromium in kiosk mode and restarting the browser if it exits. These materials establish a possible boot-time browser approach, not guaranteed YouTube playback recovery.
- Configure startup and auto-login. Set up the computer or Pi to reach its graphical session or kiosk launch after boot. Follow the instructions for the operating system and board you are using; exact steps differ by version and setup.
- Set the browser’s startup target. Configure Chromium or another browser to open the URL for the intended YouTube video or stream. A kiosk project may hide browser controls, so keep a way to exit the kiosk for sign-in and maintenance.
- Account for network startup. The browser may open before Wi-Fi or wired internet is ready. Test whether the page loads after the network comes up; boot-time page launch does not itself guarantee that YouTube will wait and start playback.
- Test the complete reboot path. Reboot or remove power, wait for the device and network to start, then check whether the page opens, whether YouTube requests sign-in, and whether playback requires a click. Repeat with the actual study stream and note which step fails.
This route requires setup and ongoing maintenance. The available documentation does not verify that a kiosk will automatically resume a YouTube livestream at its previous position, so treat that behavior as something to test rather than a guaranteed feature.
Use casting or HDMI as playback alternatives
For supported TV and streaming-device setups, YouTube casting lets a phone, tablet, or computer control playback. The relevant methods have account and network/device conditions; check YouTube’s smart TV casting and companion-device guidance. Casting may make it easier to restart playback remotely, but YouTube does not document it as automatic reboot recovery.

If you are diagnosing an issue with the TV’s YouTube app, YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another device and casting to the TV, or connecting a laptop to the TV with HDMI. HDMI is a fallback playback path, not a way to automate startup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when YouTube may pause unattended playback
Even when autoplay is on, long viewing sessions can be interrupted by a “Continue watching?” prompt. YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, says the prompt may appear during uninterrupted viewing after 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on web, or 180 minutes on TV. Those are prompt timings, not reboot timers. YouTube explains that it asks “Continue watching?” to protect watch history and help avoid data use when someone is not actually watching; see Why YouTube asks, ‘Continue watching?’.
YouTube’s autoplay help also says autoplay stops automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. These conditions concern autoplay and inactivity, not whether a device can recover playback after restarting. Do not treat an always-on display or an autoplay setting as a guarantee of uninterrupted unattended playback.

Choose an approach based on what must recover
- Need to resume an uploaded video: sign in, keep watch history available, and check its progress after reopening it. You may need to select the video yourself.
- Need the app or page to open at startup: use the device’s supported app-startup feature, if it has one, or configure a computer/Pi kiosk. Test network timing and YouTube sign-in as well as launch.
- Need to restart playback remotely: casting can provide phone or computer controls on supported setups, but it does not automate recovery after reboot.
- Need to diagnose a TV-app fault: compare playback on another device or use a laptop over HDMI to separate a TV-app issue from a content or network issue.
- Need genuinely automatic relaunch of a live broadcast at a known point: the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal way to do this after reboot. The exact device model and whether the content is a live broadcast or an uploaded replay determine what is practical.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep your own pre-recorded study videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a different approach from making a TV resume playback: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing at home has to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
