To test a YouTube podcast episode without making it public, set the upload or live stream’s visibility to Private in YouTube Studio. Invite the specific people who need access, then verify playback using the intended tester account and device. Use Unlisted only if anyone with the link being able to watch—and reshare it—is acceptable.
Choose the right YouTube privacy setting
The steps depend on whether you are checking an uploaded episode or testing a scheduled or active live stream. YouTube Studio’s Content page controls uploaded videos and live archives; Live Control Room is where you manage a stream’s settings.
| Setting | Who can watch | Sharing and comments | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private | You and people you select | Invite viewers through YouTube’s sharing flow, using their email addresses. Private videos do not support comments. | A playback check limited to chosen testers. |
| Unlisted | Anyone who has the link | Recipients can reshare the link, and comments are available. | Convenient link-based testing when resharing is an acceptable risk. |
| Public | Anyone | Not a restricted test setting. | An episode or stream intended for public viewing. |
Private and Unlisted videos generally do not appear in YouTube search results. Unlisted content can still appear if someone adds it to a public playlist. For a test that must be restricted to invited people, choose Private—not Unlisted. YouTube’s privacy-setting guidance explains the differences.
Make an uploaded episode or archive private
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Find the podcast episode. For an existing live-stream recording, open the Live tab.
- Open the episode’s Visibility control, choose Private, and save.
- Invite each tester through YouTube’s private-video sharing flow. A watch URL by itself does not grant an uninvited person access to a Private video.
Before inviting anyone, check the saved visibility setting rather than relying on a default. YouTube says adult account defaults are Public; defaults for younger users differ. See Change video privacy settings.

Make a scheduled or active live stream private
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Open the scheduled or active stream’s settings and set its visibility to Private.
- Save the setting and invite your intended testers using the available private-access workflow.
- Before the test, check the stream preview and confirm that the intended account can access it.
YouTube allows streamers to choose Public, Private, or Unlisted visibility for a live stream. Consult Manage live stream settings for YouTube’s current controls.
Run a useful playback test
YouTube recommends trying a test live stream to get comfortable with the steps. A test is useful only if you check both access and playback, rather than relying on what you see while signed in as the channel owner.

- Have a tester sign in to the invited account and try the watch page in the browser or YouTube app they will use. Check on mobile as well if mobile playback matters.
- Listen for gaps, clipping, unexpected silence, or audio that is out of sync with the video; check the picture for freezes or interruptions.
- Use headphones if you want to listen closely. Closed-back headphones are an optional monitoring aid, not a YouTube requirement.
Access can differ by account, browser or app, and device, so verify it in the setup your testers will actually use. YouTube’s live-stream tips and streaming tips cover testing, previews, and monitoring audio and video.
Check the recording after the test
Ending a test does not replace checking the resulting archive. YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. In Studio, locate the recording—use the Live tab—open its Visibility control, and confirm that it is still Private before sharing or publishing it. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See Archive live streams.

Requirements for going live
If this is your first live test, YouTube’s eligibility guidance lists a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. The 90 days is YouTube’s policy lookback period, not a waiting period to apply after changing a video’s privacy. Check Get started with live streaming for the current requirements.
