How to Make a YouTube Loop Stream with MediaPackage and AWS Elemental MediaLive

MediaLive and MediaPackage support a live workflow, but the documented AWS setup does not establish a finite-file loop or a MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. Here is how to plan the missing parts and configure the verified components.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: MediaLive and MediaPackage can form part of a live-stream workflow, but their documented setup does not establish how to loop a finite video file indefinitely or relay a MediaPackage stream to YouTube. MediaLive ingests a live source and creates outputs; MediaPackage packages a live feed. To build a YouTube loop stream, you must separately choose and verify a source system that repeatedly plays the video and an encoder or output arrangement that sends a compatible feed to YouTube. Do not treat MediaPackage as a VOD-to-live loop feature.

What each service does—and what it does not establish

A YouTube loop stream is a live broadcast whose source content repeats. That requires a continuous source, a compatible encoding and delivery path, and YouTube’s stream URL and key. The AWS and YouTube documentation describes pieces of that chain, but not a complete, verified recipe for looping a finite file through MediaLive and MediaPackage into YouTube.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • MediaLive: ingests an upstream video and audio source, transcodes it, and produces configured output groups for downstream systems. AWS’s workflow describes sources such as a camera or event encoder; its documented schedule actions include switching inputs and inserting image overlays, but do not establish an action to loop a finite video forever. AWS: How MediaLive works
  • MediaPackage: is a downstream origin and packager. AWS recommends MediaPackage v2 with CMAF Ingest for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows. AWS says the output of the MediaPackage output-group procedure is always a live stream, not a VOD stream. That does not make MediaPackage a finite-asset loop source. AWS: Delivering to MediaPackage · AWS: Result of this procedure
  • YouTube Live: accepts an encoder feed configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. The cited documentation does not show MediaPackage acting as a relay to YouTube. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

The key design gap is the handoff from a finite file to a continuous source. AWS’s documented workflow gives you no confirmed loop setting to enter in MediaLive, and the downstream packaging step does not fill that gap. Validate the selected playback and encoding design against current AWS service capabilities before building or budgeting around it.

Plan the signal path before configuring AWS

  1. Choose how the file repeats. Identify a source system that can continuously play the asset and provide uninterrupted video and audio to the encoder or ingest point. Confirm how it restarts the file, whether a restart creates a gap, and what happens if playback fails. The cited MediaLive workflow documentation does not answer those finite-file playback questions.
  2. Decide whether MediaPackage is needed. If your architecture requires MediaLive outputs to MediaPackage, use the documented live workflow. Do not insert MediaPackage on the assumption that it will loop a VOD asset or forward it to YouTube.
  3. Verify the YouTube delivery leg. Establish which component will send the encoded feed to YouTube and confirm its current supported destination, protocol and configuration. AWS documents RTMP/RTMPS as output protocols to an RTMP server, while YouTube documents connecting an encoder to its server URL and stream key; those separate descriptions do not, by themselves, confirm an end-to-end MediaLive/MediaPackage-to-YouTube configuration. AWS: Containers, protocols, and downstream systems

Until those two unknowns—the source loop and the delivery bridge—are resolved for your chosen components, you can configure the documented AWS-to-MediaPackage portion, but should not present the result as a proven YouTube loop stream.

Configure the documented MediaLive-to-MediaPackage path

For a new workflow, prefer the managed MediaPackage v2 output group

AWS recommends MediaPackage v2 with CMAF Ingest for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows. In the MediaLive output-group configuration, choose the MediaPackage v2/CMAF Ingest managed output group, then select the region, channel group, channel and ingest endpoint presented by the console. Follow that managed configuration rather than copying a generic HLS v1 endpoint example into it. AWS: Delivering to MediaPackage

The older MediaPackage v1 route uses HLS ingest and a channel ID. MediaPackage v2 also supports HLS/CMAF output-group variants for compatibility, but AWS says those generic routes do not provide the managed integration and may require migration for features that depend on it. Choose the route based on the generation and features you actually need, not simply because an older example uses HLS.

Understand the pipeline mapping

For the documented MediaPackage v2 arrangement, MediaLive pipeline 0 maps to the first ingest endpoint; a standard two-pipeline channel maps pipeline 1 to the second endpoint. AWS says this standard arrangement needs one MediaPackage channel. Its documented v2 HLS-endpoint example does not use user credentials; for the managed output group, use the console’s channel-group, channel and endpoint configuration instead of assuming the generic HLS v1 fields apply. AWS: Result of this procedure

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A two-pipeline channel is a resiliency configuration, not a way to create a loop. Check that the upstream source and downstream endpoint arrangement also support the pipeline design you select. AWS: How MediaLive works

Configure compatible YouTube ingest settings

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder that actually sends the feed to YouTube. The key is credential-like: YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in public logs. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
  3. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions to confirm the selected stream and that the encoder has connected before starting the broadcast. These instructions do not specify a MediaPackage relay configuration. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

Match codec, frame rate and bitrate to the actual output

YouTube recommends RTMPS for supported RTMP encoder workflows. Its settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. MediaLive’s RTMP/RTMPS output table lists H.264 video and AAC audio, so choose settings supported by the specific output group and delivery component—not just a codec YouTube accepts. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions · AWS: Containers, protocols, and downstream systems

YouTube target encode YouTube recommended bitrate Qualification
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 14 Mbps YouTube’s recommendation for this specific resolution, frame rate and codec.
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 17 Mbps YouTube’s recommendation for this specific resolution, frame rate and codec.

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer quality or a prescribed MediaLive output setting. For other formats, use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder table rather than applying one bitrate to every resolution or codec.

Test the full loop before making it public

  1. Confirm that the source repeats as intended, including the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning. Listen for audio gaps and watch for black frames, frozen video or an unintended pause. The specific playback system determines how to test and correct those issues.
  2. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before and during broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned live content, then monitoring both picture and sound. YouTube: YouTube live streaming tips
  3. Verify the intended watch page is accessible and that the broadcast is reaching it. Test your actual source, encoding and delivery chain together; success at the MediaPackage endpoint alone does not verify delivery to YouTube.
  4. Plan around YouTube’s archive limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous stream will produce one unbroken archive. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Only loop video and audio that you have the rights to broadcast on YouTube. Permission to use a track or video in an ordinary upload does not necessarily establish permission for continuous live rebroadcast; check the rights and terms that apply to the actual material and use. Review YouTube’s live stream health and any notices during testing. Repeating content does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s separate channel or monetization requirements, so assess those requirements independently rather than assuming a loop is automatically eligible.

Common failure points and what to check

  • The MediaPackage output exists, but YouTube is not receiving a stream. The MediaPackage live output is not evidence of a YouTube relay. Identify and verify the separate encoder/output component that sends to YouTube, with the correct server URL and stream key.
  • The stream starts but stops at the end of the asset. The finite-file repeat behavior belongs to the upstream playback/source design. The cited MediaLive schedule documentation does not establish a native forever-loop action. Confirm the player’s restart behavior and failure handling before relying on it.
  • YouTube reports connection or ingest trouble. Verify the encoder is using the selected stream’s current URL and key, a supported protocol, and compatible codec settings. Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages to locate the failing leg.
  • Video or audio quality is unstable. Check that bitrate, frame rate, codec and keyframe interval match the intended encode and YouTube’s applicable recommendations. Test with representative motion and audio rather than a static or silent clip.
  • The picture or sound breaks at the loop boundary. Inspect the source file’s start and end and the playback system’s restart behavior. A MediaPackage configuration cannot by itself correct an upstream gap.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining an AWS playback-and-encoding chain, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs with your computer off; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not provide a camera-based live broadcast or replace the AWS workflow described above.
