To add a chatroom to a WordPress site, install a chat plugin, configure who can enter and post, then add its shortcode or block to a page. First decide whether you need a community room where visitors talk to one another or a live-support tool where visitors contact your staff: those are different products, and WordPress plugin listings include both.
Choose a community room or customer-support chat
A community chatroom lets members or visitors talk with each other, often in one room or several channels. A support-chat plugin is designed for a visitor to contact an operator or business. If you want members to converse, look at room and group-chat plugins; if you need staff to answer customer questions, verify that a candidate is an agent/customer support tool rather than a public room. The WordPress-chat tag includes a mixture of chat types, while the chat-room category lists room and group-chat options.
How to add a chatroom to a WordPress site
- Install a plugin. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins, choose the option to add a plugin, search the directory, and install and activate a candidate.
- Set access and moderation. Before publishing, decide whether guests can post or participation requires a WordPress login, whether the room is public or protected, and which moderation and spam controls are available. These controls vary by plugin.
- Create a page for the room. Add a page such as “Community Chat,” then insert the plugin’s shortcode or block. With Simple Ajax Chat, the documented shortcode is

View the page while logged out and as a regular user, check it on a phone, and confirm that access rules and message posting work as you intend.
- Publish rules and an accurate privacy notice. Explain acceptable behavior and describe data handling based on the plugin you selected, not on assumptions about chat plugins in general.

BuddyPress is a broader social-network and community plugin, not a chatroom by itself. Its directory listing describes social-network components and extensibility; Wise Chat’s listing identifies BuddyPress integration as a Pro feature. How to compare plugins for your site
Compare candidates against your actual requirements rather than relying on a generic “best chat plugin” label. Directory features and compatibility indicators can change, so check each live listing and its linked documentation before installing.

- Room count: Do you need a single conversation space or several channels?
- Participation: Can anonymous visitors post, or must users have WordPress accounts?
- Hosting model: Is chat self-hosted, or does it rely on an external service or account?
- Safety tools: What moderation, message management, and spam controls are actually included?
- Placement: Can you add chat with a shortcode, block, widget, or theme template?
- Maintenance and fit: Check current WordPress compatibility and update information on the plugin’s listing.
- Privacy and cost: Review the plugin’s data disclosures and determine which features are free versus paid.
Privacy details to review before launch
Data handling is plugin-specific. Simple Ajax Chat’s listing says it collects the submitted chat name and message, may collect an optional URL, and lets administrators choose whether to collect IP information. It also describes chat cookies and says the plugin does not connect to third-party locations. Those statements apply to Simple Ajax Chat; review the current disclosures for any other plugin you consider and make your site’s privacy notice match your configuration.
