Start by checking the exact mouse model’s manual: battery chemistry and power-saving controls differ by device. Then use a fresh, in-date battery of the specified type, avoid surfaces your manufacturer says increase sensor power use, and let standby work. If the mouse has a power switch, turn it off during longer breaks.
1. Check the model before changing its battery
Find the mouse’s model number—often printed on the underside—and consult its manual or support page before replacing a battery. Do not assume that an AA battery, or a particular chemistry, is suitable just because it fits.

For example, Logitech specifies one AA alkaline battery for the M185 and M190/M191. By contrast, its Performance Mouse MX support page specifies AA NiMH rechargeable batteries and warns that using other battery types during charging can damage the mouse. These examples are model-specific, not a universal recommendation.
2. Use a fresh battery that matches the specification
If your mouse uses replaceable cells, install a fresh one of the type listed for that model. Logitech recommends batteries within their manufacturer’s expiration date for the M185 and M190/M191. An old or expired cell may have less usable capacity, even if it has not been used.

- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
Battery life varies by mouse and usage. Logitech’s stated estimates are up to 12 months for the M185, up to 18 months for the M190/M191, and up to four months for the M305, each with one AA alkaline battery. Logitech does not provide a comparable controlled test protocol on these support pages, so treat the figures as manufacturer estimates for those models—not as a promise or a general expectation for wireless mice.
3. Try an opaque, ordinary surface
If you use an optical mouse on glass or a very dark surface, test it on a normal opaque mouse pad or desk. Logitech says dark or transparent surfaces, including glass, make the optical sensor use more power on the M185, M190/M191, and M305. This advice is relevant to those models; check your own manufacturer’s guidance if you have a different mouse.

4. Let standby engage, and switch it off for longer breaks
Many wireless mice reduce power use when idle. Logitech says the M185 and M190/M191 enter standby when not in use, and its general battery-life guide recommends turning wireless devices off when they are not being used.

If your mouse has a physical power switch, use it when you will not need the mouse for an extended period. For instance, the Logitech PRO Wireless manual places the switch on the underside. A switch is not present on every model; consult the manual rather than looking for a universal setting.

5. Review optional settings on feature-rich mice
Gaming and other feature-rich mice may offer power, lighting, tracking, or report-rate controls. Use them only if your specific model exposes them, and check its documentation for what each setting does. On the Logitech PRO Wireless, the manual describes performance and endurance modes, report rate, tracking behavior, and lighting. It gives manufacturer estimates of up to 60 hours with lights off and up to 48 hours with RGB color cycling on at a 1 ms report rate. Those are model-specific figures, not a general estimate of how much any one adjustment will save. Logitech notes that battery life and capacity vary with age and use.
6. If the battery still drains unusually quickly
First confirm that the installed battery type matches the mouse specification. Then check for visible damage or dirty, obstructed, or poorly seated battery contacts, and consult the support guide for the exact model. Do not force open the mouse or apply a repair procedure that its manufacturer does not recommend. Logitech identifies settings, connectivity, battery type and capacity, and power-saving features as factors that can affect battery life, but its general guidance does not establish one cause or a universal repair for rapid drain.

What to compare when choosing a mouse
If battery maintenance matters when buying a mouse, compare the details behind the headline runtime rather than looking at the number alone.
