To make a website screenshot thumbnail at iPhone dimensions, choose a specific iPhone model or set a custom viewport, capture the page in a browser preview tool, then check the saved image’s pixel dimensions and crop or resize it if the thumbnail needs a different output shape. There is no single viewport size that represents every iPhone.
Choose what “iPhone dimensions” means
Before capturing, decide whether the thumbnail should represent a particular iPhone model or simply use a specified custom width and height. If a brief says only “iPhone dimensions,” ask for the model or agree on the viewport rather than silently treating one size as universal.

A browser viewport is the area in which a webpage lays out; the exported image’s pixel dimensions are a separate consideration. Device pixel ratio can affect resolution-dependent styles and image selection. Where the preview tool exposes a pixel-ratio setting, choose it deliberately, then inspect the file that was actually saved.
Capture a thumbnail in Chrome
- Open the webpage in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on the Device Toolbar, then choose a device preset or enter the agreed custom width and height.
- Load or refresh the page and check that the layout is the one you want to show.
- Use Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. Use Capture a full size screenshot only if the thumbnail should show the entire page rather than what fits on screen.
- Check the exported image dimensions. If the destination requires a different thumbnail size or aspect ratio, crop or resize the image and identify that as a post-capture adjustment.
Chrome’s responsive width presets include 320px, 375px, and 425px. These are tool presets, not definitive dimensions for all iPhones. Chrome Device Mode simulates a mobile experience on a desktop; it does not run the site on an iPhone. See Chrome for Developers’ Device Mode documentation.

Use Safari Responsive Design Mode
- In Safari, open the Develop menu and choose Responsive Design Mode.
- Select a preset or edit the effective viewport width and height in screen points.
- Set Pixel Ratio if you need to check density-dependent behavior, then capture the page and inspect the saved file.
- If a more faithful Apple-environment preview matters, use the available Simulator workflow and validate on Simulator or hardware.
Apple cautions that viewport presets are approximations, not exact representations of a physical device’s layout, rendering, and behavior. Its documentation also describes using Simulator for a closer preview: Apple’s Responsive Design Mode guide.
Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
For recurring thumbnails or batches, Playwright can emulate device settings such as viewport and screen size. Record the browser and device profile, viewport dimensions, and capture scope alongside the workflow so another run can reproduce the same setup. Use viewport capture when the goal is a screen-sized preview; use a full-page capture only when the whole document belongs in the image. Emulation makes a workflow repeatable, but it is still not proof that a page renders exactly as it does on physical iPhone hardware.

- Chrome Device Mode: convenient for a one-off screenshot and custom viewport sizing.

Troubleshooting the result
- The screenshot does not look like a particular iPhone. Confirm the exact model or agreed viewport dimensions; a generic preset is only an approximation.
- The image is blurry or the wrong pixel size. Check the selected pixel ratio and the exported file’s actual dimensions. Resize only after capture if the destination requires a different file size.
- The bottom of the page is missing. A viewport screenshot captures only what fits on screen. Choose a full-page capture if the whole document is needed.
- The page looks different from a real phone. Desktop emulation is a preview, not a physical-device rendering. Check in Simulator or on hardware when fidelity is important.
