To get the intended image in a Telegram channel link preview, make sure the exact page you share supplies suitable preview data and that its image is reachable, then check the preview Telegram actually generates. Telegram documents webpage previews with a photo and descriptive fields, but its general preview references do not specify a guaranteed HTML-tag recipe or promise that correct website metadata will always produce a visible card.
How Telegram link previews work
Telegram represents an external webpage preview with fields such as a photo, title, description, site name, author, and type. The type affects how the preview is rendered. That describes the preview Telegram produces; it is not a complete specification for which HTML tags its fetcher reads or how it chooses between images. Telegram’s WebPage constructor and TDLib’s WebPage reference document these concepts.

There are two separate things to check: the data available from your website, and the way Telegram or the posting client displays the resulting preview. Correcting the first cannot guarantee a particular outcome in the second.

- Inspect the exact URL you are sharing. Check the HTML response for that page, not just the finished browser view, which may depend on JavaScript. Confirm its preview information describes the intended page and image.
- Use a page-specific image. Choose an image that represents the article or page rather than a generic site logo when a suitable cover exists. Telegram’s Instant View checklist recommends a suitable photo, a description, and a site name matching the name visible on the website. That guidance concerns Instant View authoring; it is not a complete set of rules for all external link previews.
- Verify the image is publicly retrievable. Open its URL without a logged-in session and check that your server returns the image rather than an error, access screen, or redirect to an unrelated page. If you administer the site, compare server logs and response behavior for the page and image requests.
- Check the generated result in Telegram. A valid image URL and page data are inputs, not proof that Telegram generated or displayed the card you expected.
The official general-preview references reviewed do not establish universal image dimensions, supported formats, file-size limits, or a cache lifetime. Avoid relying on a specific number or format as a Telegram requirement unless current official documentation for your case says so.
Separate the fetched image from Telegram’s display controls
TDLib exposes options that can disable a preview, choose a URL for preview generation, force small or large media, and control whether the preview appears above the message text. These are message or client display controls; they do not change the metadata or image served by your website. See TDLib’s link preview options.
If the card is missing or looks different, first confirm the post has not disabled the preview or selected a different URL. Then return to the page data and image checks. A display setting cannot repair an incorrect image URL.

Diagnose a missing, old, or inconsistent preview
- Wrong image: inspect the exact page’s returned HTML and confirm the intended image is represented there. Also check that the image URL is reachable to a visitor without credentials.
- No card: check whether the posting client disabled previews, then inspect server logs for requests to the page and image. If the crawler did not request them, the logs do not by themselves establish why.
- Website looks correct, Telegram does not: record the exact URL, time, client and version, server response status, and whether requests for the page and image appear in logs. This can help distinguish website delivery from preview generation or display behavior.
- Different results across attempts or clients: compare the same URL under the same conditions and keep the observations separate. Telegram bug-tracker reports describe missing and inconsistent previews, including reports where users said pages or images had been fetched. They illustrate diagnostic uncertainty, not a confirmed universal cause or fix. See Telegram’s bug tracker.
The reviewed general documentation does not describe a guaranteed refresh workflow for ordinary external webpage previews. A cache-busting change or repeated post should not be treated as a universal refresh method.
Or skip the browser setup
You can use ScreenshotNeo to capture the page directly as an image. This is useful for checking what a URL renders, but it does not change Telegram’s webpage metadata or guarantee which image a link preview will use. cURL example: see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
