How to Make a Website: A Beginner’s Guide

Choose the right website-building route, plan essential pages, understand domains and hosting, and follow a practical checklist from first draft to launch.

The best way to make a website depends on what you need and how much setup you want to handle. A hosted visual builder is usually the quickest, lowest-maintenance route; WordPress.com gives you a hosted WordPress workflow; self-hosted WordPress or another CMS offers more control if you accept separate hosting and upkeep; and hand-coding makes sense when learning web development or building a custom feature is part of the goal.

Before choosing, decide who the site is for and what you want visitors to do. That answer determines which pages, tools, and ongoing responsibilities you actually need.

Choose the route that fits your time and control needs

Compare options by setup effort, design and feature control, hosting responsibility, maintenance, portability, support, and recurring cost. Provider guides can help identify questions to ask, but their comparisons and claims are vendor-authored rather than independent tests.

Route Good fit What to consider
Hosted visual or AI builder You want a guided editor and a quick start with little or no code. Hosting is generally bundled, but platform dependence or fewer customization choices may matter. Check plan features and renewal terms.
WordPress.com You want WordPress editing in a hosted workflow with guided lessons. Available features and domain terms depend on the current plan. See the official WordPress.com five-step website guide and its beginner course.
Self-hosted WordPress or another CMS You want themes, plugins, and more control over the site. You arrange hosting and attend to updates, backups, and security. Managed hosting can take on some maintenance. Start with WordPress.org’s setup documentation.
Custom code You want to learn web fundamentals or need functionality that a platform does not provide. This route involves the most technical setup and ongoing responsibility. MDN’s Your first website introduces the process.

No route is best for every beginner. If your priority is getting a simple site online with minimal upkeep, start with a hosted option. If flexibility is worth extra setup, consider a CMS. Choose code-first when the learning or custom requirements justify the work.

Plan the site before choosing a theme

Write down who the site serves and its main purpose: explain something, show a portfolio, receive inquiries, publish articles, take bookings, or sell. Then identify the pages and functions that support that purpose. WordPress.org recommends making a plan for how you want to use WordPress on your site, including pages, categories, and header content.

  • Home: Say what the site is about and guide visitors to the next useful action.
  • About: Explain who you are, what the site or business offers, and why visitors should trust the information.
  • Contact: Provide a reliable way to get in touch, such as a form or email address.
  • Purpose-specific pages: Add services, products, bookings, or a blog only if they serve the site’s goal.

Keep the first version focused. A small set of clear pages is easier to write, test, and maintain than a large site filled with unfinished sections.

Understand your domain and hosting

A domain is the public address people use to visit your site. Hosting stores and serves the site’s files. Hosted builders and WordPress.com generally bundle hosting with the platform; a self-hosted CMS needs a separate host. Some platforms provide a temporary subdomain so you can experiment before buying a custom domain.

Before registering a domain, check both the initial price and the renewal terms. For separate hosting, confirm what the plan includes for backups, SSL, support, updates, and security rather than assuming all hosts provide the same services.

Follow a practical build-and-launch sequence

  1. Set the purpose and main action. Decide who the site serves and what visitors should be able to do. Use that decision to define your initial pages and features.
  2. Choose your build route. Match the amount of setup and maintenance you can handle to the control you need. A visual builder avoids coding; hosted WordPress is guided; self-hosted WordPress separates the software from hosting; hand-coding requires technical work.
  3. Choose an address and hosting arrangement. Decide whether to begin with a platform-provided address or register a custom domain. Arrange separate hosting if your CMS requires it, and review included services and renewal terms.
  4. Pick a theme or template. Replace the placeholder copy and imagery. Keep the page hierarchy and navigation consistent instead of adding decorative sections that make the site harder to use.
  5. Build the pages and add original content. Start with Home, About, and Contact, then add only the service, product, booking, or blog pages your purpose requires. Use images you have permission to publish.
  6. Check usability and accessibility. Test menus, links, forms, readable text, layouts at common screen sizes, image alternatives, and keyboard access. A visual check alone does not establish accessibility; use the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative’s introduction for the underlying principles.
  7. Publish and verify the live site. Visit the public address and test important links and interactions on the published version, not just in the editor preview.
  8. Plan ongoing care. Revisit content, software updates, backups, security, and plan renewal terms. For discoverability, consult Google’s SEO Starter Guide; clear, useful pages and accurate titles help visitors and search systems understand your content, but do not guarantee rankings or traffic.

Estimate costs without treating one quote as universal

Hostinger’s guide dated September 25, 2026 estimates a basic builder or CMS website at $3–$30 per month, a custom freelancer or agency build at $2,000–$30,000 or more, and domain renewals at $10–$20 per year. These are Hostinger’s estimates, not a neutral market survey or a guaranteed quote. Your actual cost depends on provider, location, plan term, domain extension, paid themes or plugins, and required features. Check current pricing and renewal rates before committing.

WordPress software may be free while a self-hosted site still has hosting and domain costs. A hosted platform may bundle those functions into a subscription. Compare what is included and what you will pay at renewal, not just a promotional starting price.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of your pages or other websites while building and checking a site, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

For example, save a screenshot of your site’s homepage as WebP with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Replace https://example.com with your site’s URL and YOUR_API_KEY with your key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for the free plan.

Fix common launch problems

  • The site opens at a temporary address, not your custom domain: Check the domain connection steps in your platform or host and verify that you configured the domain you registered. A platform’s temporary subdomain is not the same as a custom domain.
  • A page or section is missing: Confirm that you created and published the page, then check whether it was added to the navigation menu. In a visual editor, saved draft content may not appear on the live site.
  • A form or link does not work: Test it on the live site, check the destination or form settings, and submit a test inquiry if appropriate. Do not assume an editor preview proves the interaction works after publishing.
  • The layout is difficult to use on a phone: Review the mobile layout in the editor and on a real browser viewport. Check that text remains readable and navigation, buttons, and forms can be used without awkward scrolling or zooming.
  • You are unsure whether the site is accessible: Do not rely on a template or visual inspection as proof. Check keyboard access, text alternatives for meaningful images, and the W3C WAI accessibility guidance linked above.
  • You are unsure what a plan will cost later: Review the renewal price, billing term, domain renewal, and paid add-ons before purchase. A first-term promotion does not establish the recurring price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a website without coding?

Yes. Hosted visual builders and WordPress.com provide guided workflows that do not require hand-coding for a basic site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a domain before I start?

No. Some platforms offer a temporary subdomain for experimenting. A custom domain gives the site its own public address, and its registration and renewal terms should be checked before purchase.

Is WordPress free?

WordPress software may be free, but a self-hosted WordPress site still needs hosting and usually a domain. WordPress.com is a hosted platform whose available features and domain terms depend on the current plan.
