How to Make a Timeline in PowerPoint with SmartArt

PowerPoint’s SmartArt feature can build a basic timeline. Choose a process layout, enter dated events, then add, reorder, and style timeline points.

Yes. PowerPoint can create a timeline with SmartArt, so you do not need a separate app for a basic sequence of project milestones or other events. In desktop PowerPoint, start at Insert > SmartArt > Process, choose a timeline layout, then enter dates and event descriptions in the graphic or its Text Pane. [Microsoft Support]

Choose a layout for the story you want to tell

In desktop PowerPoint, select Insert > SmartArt > Process. The gallery includes timeline-specific choices such as Basic Timeline and Circle Accent Timeline; other process layouts may also suit a timeline. [Microsoft Support]

  • Basic Timeline: a straightforward chronological sequence.
  • Circle Accent Timeline: an alternative timeline-specific design when you want event points emphasized visually.
  • Accent Process: a process layout Microsoft suggests when the emphasis is progression.
  • Continuous Picture List: a picture-oriented option when images are part of the presentation.

These are layout examples rather than a universal ranking: choose according to whether the audience needs to follow dates, understand progression, or see supporting images. [Microsoft Support]

Enter dates and event descriptions

  1. Select the text placeholders in the SmartArt graphic and type or paste each date and event label.

  2. If the Text Pane is hidden, select the SmartArt graphic, open the SmartArt Design tab, and show the Text Pane. Enter the event text there if that is easier than editing the graphic directly. [Microsoft Support]

Keep labels concise enough to fit the timeline. For a project, for example, a date paired with a short milestone name makes the sequence easier to scan than a full sentence.

Add events or change their order

In desktop PowerPoint, select a timeline shape to add a point before or after it, or to move an event within the sequence:
