To make a Telegram link preview show a large image, open the preview controls in the message composer and choose the larger media layout before sending. If you own the linked page, add accurate Open Graph metadata—including og:image—so Telegram has the intended image to display. The image metadata supplies preview content; Telegram’s layout control determines whether it is shown large.
Make the preview larger when you send a link
- Paste or type the URL in Telegram’s message field and wait for the preview to appear.
- Open the preview controls before sending the message.
- Choose the larger media presentation. You can also choose whether the preview appears above or below your message.
- If your message contains several links, select the URL whose preview you want Telegram to show.
Telegram announced these controls on October 28, 2023, but its announcement does not document identical menu labels or tap sequences for every client. The exact controls can therefore vary by app and platform. Telegram’s announcement
If the image is wrong or missing
The destination page may not provide the intended preview information, or Telegram may be showing a different image. If you do not control that page, you generally cannot edit its HTML metadata. Use the available preview controls, share a page with the desired image, or ask the site owner to correct the page metadata.
If you own the webpage, set its Open Graph image
Add Open Graph properties to the page’s HTML <head>. The protocol’s basic properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Set og:image to a publicly fetchable URL for the representative image you want associated with the page.

Check the result in Telegram
After publishing the metadata, try the URL in Telegram and inspect the preview. A correct og:image makes the intended image available as page metadata, but does not by itself select the large-media layout. The official sources cited here do not specify a guaranteed cache-refresh method or how long an updated preview takes to appear.
For bot developers: set preview options in the API
A bot has a separate, programmatic route. Use the current Telegram Bot API’s LinkPreviewOptions when sending or editing a message. Telegram’s protocol reference describes force_large_media as a request for a large preview and force_small_media as a request for a small one. These are message-level controls for bot developers, not steps for an ordinary user composing a message. Preview options may be ignored or unavailable in contexts that do not support resizing; a flag cannot be assumed to turn every arbitrary URL into a large image. Test the actual message flow your bot uses.

Why a Telegram preview may not show a large image
- The image is absent or incorrect: If you own the page, check that
og:imagepoints to the intended image and that the metadata describes the page. Open Graph defines the property, but does not certify that Telegram can fetch every image URL. - You cannot edit the destination: A person sharing a third-party page normally cannot add or change its metadata. Use the composer’s size control if resizing is available, or contact the site owner.
- The wrong URL is selected: When a message has multiple links, choose the intended URL in the preview controls.
- The client or context does not support resizing: The protocol and Bot API expose preview preferences, but their availability depends on the supported preview media and context. Do not assume the large-media option can override every limitation.
- An updated image has not appeared: The official sources cited here do not establish a cache-invalidation procedure or refresh timeline. They also do not support promises that changing the URL, using a bot, or resending will reliably clear a stale preview.
