Then review nonessential startup apps in Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. These built-in checks are reversible and often help identify what is slowing startup; no single change fixes every slow PC.
Why is my Windows startup so slow?
The point where the delay occurs helps you choose what to check next, but it does not identify a cause on its own:

- Before the sign-in screen: Note how long Windows takes to reach the sign-in screen. If Windows cannot start normally, use the recovery guidance below rather than changing startup apps from the desktop.
- During sign-in: Apps configured to open automatically may add time as you sign in.
- After the desktop appears: Windows or applications may still be loading. Limited storage, outdated software, malware, startup apps, or older hardware can contribute to slow performance, according to Microsoft’s performance guidance.
How do I stop apps from opening on startup?
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Review the list. In Task Manager, the startup-impact indicator can help prioritize which entries to investigate.
- Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically. If unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled and look it up before changing it.
Microsoft notes that apps that run automatically at boot can affect both startup speed and overall performance. See Configure Startup applications in Windows for details. Avoid deleting unfamiliar startup entries from the registry: registry changes can have unintended consequences.

What else should I check before changing Windows startup?
- Available storage: Check whether the system drive has room available. Limited storage is one possible contributor to poor performance.
- Windows and app updates: Check for applicable updates; outdated software can be a factor.
- Malware: If you suspect an infection, use Windows Security or follow appropriate security guidance.
These checks address common contributors, not a guaranteed cure. Microsoft lists several potential causes of slow performance, so follow the symptom and results rather than assuming every slow boot needs the same fix.

How can a clean boot help find a software conflict?
If the delay continues and Windows starts normally, a clean boot can help test whether a third-party service or startup item is involved. Microsoft’s procedure uses System Configuration and Task Manager to temporarily disable non-Microsoft services and startup items. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps, and keep a record of what you change.
- Disable the specified non-Microsoft services and startup items following Microsoft’s instructions.
- Restart and check whether the original delay still occurs.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable items systematically and restart between checks to narrow down the conflict.
- When finished, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions.
A clean boot temporarily removes some functionality, and policies on a managed device may prevent these changes. Do not leave services disabled after testing unless you have established that they are unnecessary.

What if Windows will not start normally?
Use recovery tools when ordinary startup troubleshooting is not possible or the PC cannot start, rather than treating them as routine speed tweaks.

Try Safe Mode for a reduced startup
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of essential services and drivers. If Windows runs differently there, that can help you test whether the issue occurs under a reduced startup configuration. Instructions are in Microsoft’s Windows startup settings guide.

Use Startup Repair for certain startup failures
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides recovery options when normal startup fails. Startup Repair is intended for certain problems that prevent Windows from starting, including some damaged system files or boot-configuration problems. It is not a general performance booster and is not guaranteed to resolve every failure. Learn how to access Windows RE in Microsoft’s Windows recovery environment guide.
If the device is encrypted, you may need its BitLocker recovery key to use recovery options. Before choosing a recovery action that could remove files, back up important data if possible and start with the least disruptive option. Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows page explains available choices.

Should I upgrade the hardware?
Not as a first step. Older hardware can limit performance, but whether an SSD, memory, or another component would help depends on the PC and the cause of its delay. Check compatibility and diagnose the machine before buying parts; built-in startup-app review and software troubleshooting do not require a hardware purchase.
What Windows 10 users should know
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but they no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. This lifecycle change matters when deciding what to do with an older PC, but it does not by itself explain slow startup. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery environment page for recovery information.
