Systemd can restart a service process after it exits unexpectedly; a system watchdog addresses a different problem by rebooting the Raspberry Pi if the operating system stops servicing it. Neither mechanism guarantees that a service is healthy or that every kind of hang will recover. The headline’s “haven’t SSHed in weeks” is a reported outcome, not a verified test result or proof that all failure modes are covered.
Service restart and system reboot solve different failures
A service manager can act when an individual service process fails. A system watchdog operates at the host level: Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes a hardware watchdog that the operating system must reset regularly, with systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec as the runtime control. If the OS hangs or crashes and no longer services the watchdog, the watchdog can reset the whole Pi.

These mechanisms have different scopes and recovery actions. A service restart does not reboot the Pi; a system watchdog reset does not specifically diagnose or repair one application. A restart can also leave a process running without making it answer requests correctly, so recovery needs to be judged against the service’s actual health requirements.
What systemd can do when a service exits
A systemd unit can use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure to have systemd restart a service after an unclean failure. The Raspberry Pi Forums discussion describes this service-level behavior, but the exact meaning and available options depend on the unit and systemd semantics; consult the systemd.service manual when configuring a real service.

This approach responds to a process failure that systemd detects. It does not, by itself, establish that the application has stopped responding while its process remains alive. A service that silently hangs may require an application-level health check or other monitoring able to detect that condition. A restart policy is not a universal fix for application-level failures.
What the Raspberry Pi watchdog covers
Raspberry Pi’s watchdog documentation describes the kernel setting kernel_watchdog_timeout as enabling a hardware watchdog handed over to the operating system; its documented default is 0, meaning disabled. The OS must periodically reset the watchdog. Raspberry Pi documents RuntimeWatchdogSec as the systemd runtime control used to do that.

The watchdog is intended to help recover from OS hangs or crashes after boot has completed. It is not the same as a service restart rule: when it triggers, the recovery action is a system reset, not a targeted restart of one process. Raspberry Pi’s documentation says RuntimeWatchdogSec is not enabled by default on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, and must be configured before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used. Check the documentation for the OS release and configuration in use rather than assuming it is active.
Choose recovery by the failure you need to handle
| Failure or mechanism | What it acts on | Recovery action | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service exits unexpectedly; systemd restart policy | One service process | Restarts that service | Does not prove the service is healthy or detect every silent hang. |
| Operating system stops servicing the hardware watchdog | The Raspberry Pi as a whole | Resets the system | On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, RuntimeWatchdogSec is not enabled by default. |
What “fixes itself” can—and cannot—mean
Automatic recovery can reduce the need to connect remotely for a failure it is configured to detect. But the headline does not identify the unit, restart policy, model, monitoring, operating system configuration, or tests behind the reported weeks without SSH. It therefore cannot establish whether the setup handles only a service exit, a silent application hang, or an OS-level failure.

To assess a setup, match each recovery mechanism to a specific failure and confirm what it detects and what it restarts. A process restart, a health check that detects an unresponsive application, and a whole-system watchdog reset are different layers; one should not be presented as evidence that the others are covered.
