You can build an offline voice-controlled music player on a Raspberry Pi 4 by connecting a microphone, running speech recognition and command handling locally, and mapping a small set of recognized commands to a music player that reads local files. The key is keeping every stage on-device after setup: a Pi-compatible voice library alone does not guarantee that recognition, setup, or playback works without an internet connection.
How the offline setup works
Think of the system as four connected stages: microphone capture, local speech or command recognition, intent handling, and playback from music files stored on the Pi or other locally accessible storage. A phrase such as “pause” must be recognized, interpreted as a player action, and passed to the playback software.

Rhasspy documents a modular voice-assistant design in which audio input, wake-word detection, speech-to-text, intent recognition, intent handling, and audio output operate as separate services communicating through MQTT. Its speech-to-text documentation describes Pocketsphinx and Kaldi as offline, on-device options. This is an architectural example, not confirmation that every component or current installation path is maintained or works offline without setup or downloads. See Rhasspy’s services documentation and speech-to-text documentation.

Choose a microphone the Pi can use
The microphone must appear as an input device in the operating system and be readable by the audio-capture software used by your voice stack. A USB microphone is a straightforward category to investigate, but confirm Linux detects it and that your chosen software can capture from it before relying on it.
Raspberry Pi’s Codec Zero audio HAT is another option. Its documented features include a built-in MEMS microphone, external microphone support, and audio output. Its mono speaker connection is specified for a 1.2 W / 8 Ω speaker, so it is a particular speaker-output route rather than a general replacement for a stereo hi-fi setup.

Plan how music will reach your speakers
The Pi 4 can send audio through HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, or its 3.5 mm TRRS jack. Raspberry Pi documentation specifies that “The TRRS jack provides line-level output, not amplified speaker-level output.” In practice, that jack may need powered speakers or an amplifier to produce useful speaker volume. Other possible routes include a USB audio device or an appropriate audio HAT. Choose based on your existing speakers, connectors, and whether amplification is built in. Raspberry Pi explains the options and output-device selection in its audio and output peripherals documentation.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Keep voice prompts separate from music playback in your design. Rhasspy documents playing WAV files through aplay, with an optional ALSA device setting. That demonstrates local sound output, not a full music-library player. You still need playback software that can manage your files and a way to connect recognized commands to its controls. See Rhasspy’s audio-output documentation.
Keep the music and storage local
Store the music on the Pi’s microSD card or another storage device available locally. Choose capacity for the operating system, music collection, and any speech models or other software components your setup requires. Raspberry Pi advises choosing an SD card appropriate to the selected OS in its setup documentation. Rhasspy’s hardware page mentions a 4 GB minimum for its older setup; that historical minimum should not be treated as a sensible capacity recommendation for a current OS, speech components, and a music library.

To remain independent of internet services during use, the music files and speech processing must both be locally available. Depending on the software, downloading an OS image, engine, or model may require internet access during installation; confirm those setup requirements separately from day-to-day operation.
Choose a recognition approach and define commands
For a small vocabulary, compare two broad approaches: a speech-to-intent engine that maps speech directly to defined commands, or a pipeline that converts speech to text and then interprets the text as an intent. Rhasspy illustrates the modular pipeline and documents offline recognition engines, although its documentation is old enough that you should check current installation and maintenance status. Picovoice publishes a Pi 4 quick-start for Rhino, but its platform information alone does not establish all offline conditions or access requirements.

Before choosing, check these practical fit questions:
- Does speech processing run on the Pi after setup, and what must be downloaded or configured first?
- Does the software support your Pi 4 operating-system version and CPU architecture?
- Can you define a constrained set of commands, and what happens when a phrase is not recognized?
- Can it capture reliably from your chosen microphone in the room where the player will be used?
- How will recognized intents control your chosen local music player?
- Are there ongoing maintenance, licensing, or access-key requirements?
Start with a deliberately small command set: play or resume, pause, next track, choose a known track or artist, and adjust volume. Define what each phrase should do in the player, and decide on a safe response to an unknown or ambiguous phrase—for example, do nothing rather than selecting an unintended track. The exact command-to-player integration depends on the software you choose; the cited documentation does not verify a specific player integration for this build.
What performance to expect
The cited sources do not provide comparable Raspberry Pi 4 measurements for recognition accuracy, response time, CPU use, or memory use. Performance will depend on the chosen engine, model, microphone, room noise, and configuration, so there is no source-backed accuracy or latency figure to promise for this design.
