To make a PDF from an HTML email template, render the completed template in a real browser and use its PDF-printing API. Puppeteer and Playwright both support this workflow in JavaScript. The result is a document rendered from your HTML—not a conversion of a message as it appears in a particular email client.
Prepare the email template for browser rendering
Render the template with its real data first, then provide the browser with a complete HTML document. Include the CSS and any required images or other assets in a way the rendering environment can access. Email-template markup alone may not be a full document or contain everything needed for a standalone render.

The browser PDF APIs document how to print a page; they do not establish email-client compatibility rules or guarantee that remote assets will load. Treat the output as a browser rendering and inspect it rather than assuming it matches Gmail, Outlook, or another mail client.

Generate the PDF with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project, then navigate to a route that serves the fully rendered template. This example waits for network activity to settle, writes an A4 PDF, prints background graphics, and closes the browser even if PDF creation fails.

Generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() returns a buffer, which you can write to disk or pass to the rest of your application. For example:

Choose print styling, page geometry, and colors
Print media or screen media
Both APIs generate PDFs using print CSS by default. Add or adjust @media print rules for a document intended to print. If you need screen styling instead, explicitly emulate screen media before calling the PDF method.
Paper size, margins, and page breaks
Choose a paper standard appropriate to the intended audience, such as A4 or Letter, and set margins, orientation, and page breaks deliberately. Playwright documents Letter as 8.5 × 11 inches and A4 as 8.27 × 11.7 inches. Puppeteer supports paper formats, explicit dimensions, margins, and orientation.
You can put page rules in CSS using @page. With Puppeteer, preferCSSPageSize: true gives the CSS page size priority; without it, the browser scales content to fit the paper dimensions or format supplied through the API. Align CSS page rules with API options to avoid unexpected scaling.

Backgrounds and color fidelity
Puppeteer’s printBackground defaults to false, so set it to true if the design depends on background fills or images. PDF printing can modify colors by default. The browser documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact color rendering is desired; verify the actual output because the setting does not replace visual inspection.

Fonts, headers, and footers
Puppeteer waits for fonts by default, but remote fonts or other pending assets can still affect readiness and timing. Its PDF options include waitForFonts and a timeout. Both APIs support header and footer templates. Playwright notes that scripts in those templates do not run and page styles are not visible inside them; Puppeteer documents placeholders including date, title, URL, page number, and total pages.
Scale and page ranges
Both APIs expose print controls such as scale and page ranges. Use them when the output needs a specific fit or only selected pages, and confirm the result in the generated file rather than relying on defaults.

Choose between Puppeteer and Playwright
There is no established universal winner for speed or rendering fidelity in the documented material. Prefer the library that fits your existing project and that lets you operate a browser version reproducibly.

Inspect the PDF and troubleshoot common problems
Check representative short and long template content, since wrapping and pagination can change as data changes. Browser PDF APIs provide controls, not a promise that every template will look right without adjustment.
- Backgrounds are missing: Enable
printBackground: truein the PDF options. - Colors look different: Printing can adjust colors. Try the documented
-webkit-print-color-adjustCSS property where exact color rendering is needed, then inspect the output. - Content is unexpectedly scaled or clipped: Check the selected paper size, margins, orientation, and CSS
@pagerules. In Puppeteer, confirm whetherpreferCSSPageSizeshould be enabled. - Images are missing: Check that the browser can access each asset at render time and that the page has finished loading before printing. The API documentation does not guarantee remote-image availability.
- Fonts are substituted or late: Check font loading and timeout behavior. Puppeteer waits for fonts by default, but a pending remote asset can delay the process.
- The output differs from the email clients you support: A browser-generated PDF is not proof of identical email-client rendering. Inspect the PDF and separately validate any client-specific requirements.
- Headers or footers lack expected formatting or dynamic content: Review the library’s header/footer constraints. For Playwright, scripts in these templates are not evaluated and page styles do not apply inside them.
