Before switching, identify the tasks you rely on, check the device’s app limits, and test each account’s sign-in, notifications, and recovery options on the exact phone you plan to use.
First, identify what kind of minimalist phone you have
“Minimalist phone” can mean either an ordinary smartphone with a pared-down home screen or a purpose-built handset with a limited, approved set of functions. The distinction determines whether you can keep using your apps.

A minimalist launcher on a smartphone
A launcher changes the home-screen interface; it does not remove the apps already installed. The minimalist phone app FAQ says installed apps remain accessible after installation. That makes a launcher a practical option if your priority is a simpler interface without giving up smartphone app access. It does not guarantee that every app will work on every device, or that your app data and credentials will move automatically.
A restricted handset
Some purpose-built phones do not offer a general app store. Punkt says its MP02 does not support app installation or sideloading; only Punkt-authorized apps such as Pigeon and DailyView are supported. Its documentation lists WhatsApp, Spotify, email, web browsing, and social media as unsupported functions. See Punkt’s MP02 app-install FAQ and MP02 feature information. A restricted handset may still handle basic communications and selected features, but do not assume that an app you use on a smartphone is available.

Make an essentials list by task
List what you need to accomplish, not just the names of apps. This catches dependencies that can be easy to overlook when comparing phones.
- Calls, texts, and messaging
- Maps, travel bookings, tickets, and links opened from messages or email
- Banking, payments, and transaction approvals
- Work, school, health, or government services
- Tasks that require a camera, QR-code scan, browser, or biometric check
- Account sign-in codes and recovery methods
Then mark which tasks are essential every day, which you can do on another device, and which you could do without. The cited device information does not establish whether any particular bank, employer, carrier, or service will work for you; compatibility depends on your actual accounts and intended handset.

Test each essential workflow before switching
Use the phone you intend to carry and work through the real sequence for each essential task. An app appearing in a list is not enough if its sign-in, approval, or camera step fails.
- Install or open the required app. On a launcher setup, check that the app is installed and accessible. On a restricted handset, verify that the required service is among the authorized apps; do not count on sideloading where the manufacturer says it is unsupported.
- Sign in and complete the needed steps. Check passwords, biometric prompts, device approvals, and any links the service sends. For banking, avoid making a real transaction just to test compatibility; use a safe sign-in or other verification option if available.
- Check notifications. Confirm that approvals, one-time alerts, messages, and work notifications arrive when expected. The minimalist phone FAQ on notifications notes that some apps need notifications enabled and advises allowing notifications for an affected app if the app’s filter disrupts its behavior.
- Try camera and link-dependent tasks. Test any QR scan, document capture, browser handoff, map link, or ticket display you actually rely on.
- Check your fallback sign-in. Confirm that you can still access the account if the phone is lost or unavailable, using a recovery method you can reach from another device.
Protect account access and recovery
Before moving your SIM or retiring your current phone, check how each important account verifies your identity. Depending on the service, it may use SMS, an authenticator app, a security key, email, or approval on a trusted device. Make sure the method will be available after the switch, and that you have a working fallback.

We'll continue to release other utility-oriented tools, which will be available with software updates.
An independent feature matrix flags banking and app-based two-factor authentication as areas to check when assessing minimalist phones. That is a compatibility warning, not proof that a particular banking or authentication app works—or fails—on a specific model. Test the services you rely on and keep access to your current device or another suitable device until you have verified them.
Account setup depends on the device and app
Light Phone III setup
The Light Phone III setup guide says initial setup requires Wi-Fi to update the software and create a Light Account with an email address and password. This is the manufacturer’s setup account; it is separate from signing in to your bank, email, or work services. The guide does not provide a complete app-compatibility list.

Restoring a minimalist launcher purchase
If you change Android devices, the minimalist phone FAQ on purchases says the purchase is linked to the Google account used to buy it and can be accessed on multiple devices when you sign in with that same account. This applies to access to the launcher purchase; it does not mean other apps’ credentials or data transfer automatically.

A launcher is the more app-preserving route described by its FAQ. A restricted handset makes a stronger trade-off: fewer general-purpose app options in exchange for a more limited feature set. If even one essential task cannot be completed on the new device, decide whether a second device is acceptable before making it your only phone.

Switch only after the checks pass
- Write down essential tasks and their app, camera, browser, notification, and sign-in dependencies.
- Confirm whether the device is a smartphone with a launcher or a restricted handset, then check its current support information.
- Test each essential workflow, including notification delivery and account recovery.
- Keep your existing smartphone, tablet, or computer available until the new setup has proven itself for the services you need.
- After confirming access, move your SIM or stop relying on the old phone. Do not assume that a launcher purchase, app data, passwords, or account recovery details transfer together.
