You can make a YouTube live stream members-only in YouTube Studio, but “always-on” requires a continuous feed to reach YouTube. Set the stream’s visibility to Members only, choose which paid members can watch, then use an encoder or a cloud service to send the feed. YouTube does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 playback, so plan how you will monitor and recover the stream.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can use both memberships and live streaming before building the broadcast around them. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance calls for a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer aged at least 16. If live streaming is new to the channel, enabling it for the first time may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup help. Don’t leave first-time activation until just before a planned broadcast.

Set up a membership perk
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships.
- Create a membership level and publish its perks. YouTube allows up to six levels; higher-priced levels inherit the perks of lower-priced levels.
- Include a members-only live stream as a perk, and decide which levels should have access. Membership configuration and approval must be in place before you can offer the stream to paid members.
Make the stream members-only from the start
This is the direct option when you do not want a public portion of the broadcast. YouTube documents this workflow for desktop live streams that are not vertical.

- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Create or schedule the broadcast and configure its details.
- Set the visibility to Members only.
- Choose All paid members or select a membership level and above.
- Schedule the stream or go live. Members are notified as with regular subscriber broadcasts. Nonmembers can see broadcast metadata, but cannot watch the members-only stream.

Send a continuous feed to YouTube
Members-only visibility controls who can watch; it does not create the video feed. For a continuous broadcast, an encoder must send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders, so dedicated hardware is optional. Choose the workflow that fits your production needs and that you can monitor and restart if something fails.

Connect an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- Paste those values into the corresponding stream settings in your software or hardware encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview to confirm that video and audio are arriving correctly.
- Keep the encoder running for as long as you want the feed to continue, and watch for dropped connections or other stream problems.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee of perpetual playback or uninterrupted streaming, so plan for monitoring and recovery rather than treating an archive as proof that a 24/7 broadcast will stay live indefinitely.
Prepare and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event, starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Those recommendations are presented as event-planning advice, but the checks are useful for a continuous stream too. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Start publicly, then switch to members-only
Choose this workflow if you want a public opening before restricting the broadcast to members. In Live Control Room, you can schedule a transition from a public stream to a members-only stream using a countdown of 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. When the countdown ends, members move into the members-only stream and nonmembers are prompted to join. YouTube creates two streams using the same stream key, and reports the public and members-only portions separately in Analytics. The transition feature is unavailable on vertical live streams.
- Start the broadcast publicly in Live Control Room.
- Schedule the change to members-only and choose a countdown length.
- Use the countdown to tell viewers that access is about to change.
- At the end of the countdown, members continue into the members-only stream; nonmembers are prompted to join.
YouTube recommends testing the transition with an unlisted stream first. If you do not need a public portion, create the stream as members-only from the outset instead. The transition details and current format limitation are in YouTube’s members-only live-stream help.

Choose a workflow for an always-on broadcast
The access setting and the feed source solve different problems. YouTube’s members-only setting determines who can watch; your encoder or streaming service must keep the feed reaching YouTube. The choice depends on whether you need live production controls, prerecorded playback, and someone or something available to recover a failure.

This suits a computer-based production workflow, but the computer and connection must remain available while the feed is running.
- Hardware encoder: YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders. It is an optional dedicated-encoding route, not a membership requirement.
- Cloud playback for prerecorded video: YouTube’s encoder help names Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That reference does not establish that a service grants members-only access or guarantees uptime. Configure the YouTube broadcast’s membership visibility separately and check the chosen provider’s current features.

Common problems and what to check
- Members-only visibility is missing: Check that channel memberships are enabled and configured under Earn → Memberships, and that the channel is eligible to live stream. The documented members-only creation flow is for desktop streams that are not vertical.
- Members cannot watch: Confirm the stream’s visibility and selected audience—All paid members or the intended level and above. Check that the viewer has an active paid membership at an eligible level.
- The encoder does not connect: Recheck that the stream URL and key in the encoder match the values for the broadcast in YouTube Studio. If live streaming was only just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream stops or loses its feed: Check whether the encoder, computer or network connection has stopped sending video. Restart the feed when needed and monitor the preview; the available guidance does not promise that a continuous stream will recover or remain live without interruption.
- The public-to-members transition does not work: Verify that you are using Live Control Room and a supported, non-vertical stream. Test the transition with an unlisted broadcast before relying on it for a live audience.
- The archive ends sooner than expected: YouTube’s encoder help describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on that guidance as a 24/7 archive or continuity guarantee.
Keep membership access and viewing expectations clear
Tell viewers which paid membership levels can watch, whether there will be a public opening, and what to expect if the feed is interrupted. Membership-only visibility is an access control, not a promise of uninterrupted service. Also make sure that the video and audio you send are suitable for your channel and comply with YouTube’s applicable policies; the documentation cited here does not establish any special copyright exemption for members-only broadcasts.
