Making a macOS Sequoia USB boot installer drive is the most reliable way to install (or reinstall) macOS when you need offline media, multiple-device deployment, or a clean recovery path.
This guide uses Apple’s standard createinstallmedia method. It’s repeatable, scriptable, and works well as long as the installer app is present in /Applications and the USB is formatted correctly.

What a macOS Sequoia USB boot installer drive is (and why you’d make one)
A boot installer drive is a USB flash drive prepared so your Mac can start from it and then run the macOS installer in recovery-like mode. It’s different from a “copy of the installer” because it includes the bootable installer environment.

- Reinstall macOS after major drive issues
- Perform clean installs consistently across more than one Mac
- Troubleshoot when recovery Internet installs fail
Prerequisites
Before you start, gather what you need. Missing even one piece is the #1 reason these attempts fail.
Hardware requirements
- USB flash drive: 16GB+ (32GB recommended for comfort)
- Mac to create the installer: Any Mac running macOS that can download the macOS Sequoia installer app
- Power: Plug in your Mac during the process (prevents sudden sleep or brownouts)
Software requirements
- macOS Sequoia installer app downloaded from Apple (typically it appears in
/Applicationsas an app named likeInstall macOS Sequoia.app) - Terminal access (built in)
Compatibility note (Apple silicon vs Intel)
The USB creation command is the same. The boot procedure differs based on whether your Mac uses Apple silicon or Intel.
Check the macOS Sequoia installer app you already downloaded
Everything hinges on the correct installer app filename and path. The createinstallmedia command points to a specific app bundle.

- Look for the app named
Install macOS Sequoia.app - If you don’t see it, stop and download it again (or use the installer you already have, if it’s already in Applications)
Confirm the exact app name (command accuracy)
Open Terminal and run:
ls -la /Applications | grep -i sequoia
You’re looking for the exact string in the app name so the path matches what you have.
Prepare the USB drive (erase + proper partitioning)
Before you create the installer, you must erase the USB and create a partition scheme compatible with the boot installer.
1) Identify the USB device name
Insert your USB drive, then open Terminal and run:
diskutil list
Find the entry that matches your USB size. You’ll see something like /dev/diskN (for example, /dev/disk2).
Be careful: picking the wrong disk can wipe a system drive.

3) Erase and format as GUID + APFS
Use the following command (replace diskN and the USB label):

Create the boot installer using createinstallmedia
Now you’ll turn the installer app into a bootable USB using Apple’s createinstallmedia tool.
1) Run the createinstallmedia command
In Terminal, run this command exactly, but adjust the installer app path if your app name differs:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sequoia.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/SEQUOIA-USB --nointeraction

2) Wait for completion
The process typically takes 10–30 minutes depending on USB speed (USB 2.0 vs USB 3.x) and the Mac’s storage performance.

Boot from the USB installer (Apple silicon vs Intel)
Creating the installer isn’t enough—you also need the correct boot steps.
Apple silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3, and newer)
- Shut down your Mac (don’t just restart): Apple menu → Shut Down
- Insert the USB installer
- Press and hold the power button
- Keep holding until you see Loading startup options
- Select EFI Boot or the USB boot entry labeled for the installer
- Click the arrow to continue into the installer
Intel Mac
- Shut down the Mac: Apple menu → Shut Down
- Insert the USB installer
- Turn the Mac on and immediately hold the Option (⌥) key
- Release when you see the boot picker
- Select the USB installer (it may appear as an external boot or installer label)
- Proceed through the macOS installer options
Common problems and how to fix them
These are the most frequent failure points and what to try next. Keep notes on what the installer or Terminal says, because the error text is usually precise.
Problem: createinstallmedia says it can’t find the installer app
Symptoms: Errors mentioning missing Createinstallmedia path or Install macOS Sequoia.app.
Fix: Verify the installer app is in /Applications and matches the filename. Use:
ls -la /Applications | grep -i "install macos"
Then update the command to match your exact app name (including capitalization).

Problem: the USB won’t show in the boot picker
Fix checklist:
- Use a different USB port (preferably a USB 3.x port)
- Replace the USB drive if it’s old or has write issues
- Re-run the erase step and createinstallmedia (formatting problems cause silent boot issues)
- On Apple silicon, look specifically for the startup options entry that maps to external boot (often labeled as EFI Boot)
Problem: createinstallmedia fails mid-way
Symptoms: Terminal stops with an error, or it completes without making a usable installer.

Safety, security, and data gotchas
Creating a boot installer isn’t destructive to your internal drive, but it is destructive to the USB you format.

Alternatives and when they make sense
Apple’s createinstallmedia approach is the reference method. Still, there are a few practical alternatives depending on your situation.
Use another Mac to create the USB
If your current Mac can’t download the installer or you’re blocked by permissions, use any compatible Mac to generate the USB, then boot from it on the target Mac.
Recovery-based installation (no USB)
If you have a working internet connection, Recovery can download and install. It’s convenient, but it can fail when internet is unreliable—one reason a USB boot installer stays valuable.

Create a second USB immediately
If you’re doing important work (mass reinstall or migrations), make two identical installer drives. It’s faster than troubleshooting a single failed USB during a time-sensitive job.
FAQ
How big does the USB need to be for macOS Sequoia?
16GB is the minimum baseline, but 32GB is strongly recommended to reduce space-related failures and to handle any installer expansion needs.
Can I use the same USB installer for multiple Macs?
Yes. The installer is designed to boot and run on many Macs. Still, make sure each target Mac meets macOS Sequoia requirements (hardware support varies by model).
Why does my USB look like it has something, but it won’t boot?
Most often the formatting step or the --volume target was wrong, or the write was interrupted. Re-erase the USB and rerun createinstallmedia.
Do I need to format the USB as ExFAT or FAT32?
No. For this method, format it as APFS with a GUID partition scheme using diskutil eraseDisk.
Can I create the installer from a non-Apple or older macOS version?
The practical constraint is whether you can obtain Install macOS Sequoia.app and run createinstallmedia from the required app bundle. If you can’t download the Sequoia installer app on that system, use a different Mac.
Bottom Line
To make a macOS Sequoia USB boot installer drive, you need two things: the installer app in /Applications and a correctly erased USB formatted as APFS with a GUID partition scheme. Then run Apple’s createinstallmedia with the right --volume path.
If it doesn’t boot, don’t guess—re-check the installer app path, confirm the USB volume label under /Volumes, and redo the erase + create steps using the exact disk identifier from diskutil list.
