Photos for Mac can start a greeting-card project, but Apple’s current workflow uses a third-party Project Extension for the design, checkout, and fulfillment. Select your images, choose File > Create > Cards > App Store to install an extension such as Motif or Mimeo Photos, then return to File > Create > Cards to build and order the card. Apple’s current print-products information is at Apple’s macOS Print Products page.
What you need before you begin
- A Mac with Photos installed and the pictures in a Photos library, album, Memory, or accessible shared library.
- A compatible card Project Extension from the Mac App Store. Apple’s general documentation cites macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later, but each extension can require a newer macOS version.
- Internet access to download the extension, upload the project, and submit an order.
- Payment and shipping details for the selected provider.
- Your final message, recipient details, and delivery deadline.
Use original, high-resolution photos whenever possible. Screenshots and compressed social-media downloads can look soft when enlarged. Select several alternatives before starting because templates may favor portrait or landscape images. Correct exposure, color, and rotation in Photos first.

The fastest method: create a card through Photos
1. Select the source photos
- Open Photos.
- Select one or more photos, an album, a Memory, or another photo group.
- If you use iCloud Shared Photo Library, choose the library view that contains the images. Apple’s project instructions are documented at Create projects using third-party apps in Photos on Mac.
2. Install a card extension
- In Photos, choose File > Create > Cards > App Store.
- Review the compatible apps and select one.
- Click Get (or the current installation control) and complete installation.
- Close and reopen Photos if the extension does not appear immediately.
Apple’s installation and management instructions are at Create and order print products in Photos with Project Extensions.
3. Start the card project
- Return to Photos and select the intended images if necessary.
- Choose File > Create > Cards.
- Select the installed extension, such as Motif or Mimeo Photos.
- Follow that provider’s project setup screens.
The extension—not Photos—supplies the themes, layouts, paper choices, pricing, account screens, and ordering controls.

- 100-PACK - Bulk pack of 100 all-occasion greeting cards in six simple and petite floral designs - blank inside; complete with 100 white 32 lb. offset envelopes

- HIGH-QUALITY CARDSTOCK - Each card is printed on 90 lb. cover stock, equivalent to 250 gsm

4. Choose a format and design
Depending on the provider, choose a flat or folded card, orientation, size, theme or blank layout, background, border, fonts, and envelope or paper options. Motif advertises flat 4-by-6-inch and folded 5-by-7-inch cards among its formats at Motif Photo Cards. Mimeo advertises flat and folded cards with designer themes and customizable layouts at Mimeo Photo Cards.
5. Place photos and write the message
- Drag images into the template’s placeholders.
- Use the extension’s crop, zoom, and reposition controls where available.
- Keep faces, logos, and important details away from trim edges and fold lines.
- Replace every sample message and check names, dates, punctuation, and capitalization.
- For folded cards, inspect the front, inside-left, inside-right, and back panels.
6. Proof the complete card
View the design at full size rather than relying only on a thumbnail. Check crop boundaries, fold direction, readable text, image-quality warnings, envelope inclusion, quantity, shipping address, estimated delivery date, and the total after tax and shipping.
7. Complete the pre-flight check and order
Submit the project through the extension or vendor account. Mimeo’s checkout guidance identifies empty photo placeholders and unchanged default text as pre-flight problems; its process is described at How to Checkout and Order Your Photo Project. Motif’s checkout displays the project price, while Mimeo uses a BUY control.

Motif or Mimeo Photos?
| Provider | Photos connection | Formats and controls | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motif | Works directly within Photos on macOS | Flat and folded cards, including listed 4-by-6-inch flat and 5-by-7-inch folded formats | A straightforward Photos-first workflow | Fewer themes than some competitors; tax and shipping are extra |
| Mimeo Photos | Mac Photos integration plus iOS and web workflows | Flat and folded cards, themes, layouts, fonts, backgrounds, and borders | More design flexibility or cross-device work | May involve a separate Mimeo account or workflow |
| Shutterfly | Primarily web and app based | Broad template and mailing-oriented options | Promotions and a large online template library | Not the same seamless Photos menu workflow |
| Orion Print Studio | Separate Mac design application | Greeting cards, paper sizes, fold styles, photos, and text | Independent layout or possible home printing | Mac App Store listing specifies macOS 12.4 or later and in-app purchases; it is not a Photos Project Extension recommendation |
Motif’s pricing page showed approximately $1.25–$1.89 for flat cards and about $2.10 for folded cards when checked on August 16, 2026; those figures exclude tax and shipping. Mimeo pages showed approximately $1.25–$1.49 for flat cards and $2.10–$2.20 for folded cards at that time. Treat these as dated base-price signals, not guaranteed checkout totals. See Motif pricing and Mimeo Photos.
For web-based alternatives, Shutterfly’s promotions are temporary and restricted; check the current terms at Shutterfly promotions. The Orion listing is at Orion Print Studio on the Mac App Store. A feature comparison from Mimeo is available at Mimeo Photos versus Motif.
If the Cards option is missing
- Install a provider through File > Create > Cards > App Store.
- Check File > Create > Other; Apple says an installed print app can appear there.
- Open File > Create > Manage, select the information button beside Photos Projects, and turn the extension on.
- Quit and reopen Photos.
- Check the extension’s Mac App Store listing for macOS and country or region support.
- Contact the extension developer for app-specific failures.
Using an older Apple card project
Select the old project in the Photos sidebar and look for a Convert button. If offered, choose a compatible extension, then inspect every crop, font, message, and panel arrangement. The original project remains alongside the converted copy, and not every extension supports conversion. If no conversion control appears, recreate the card from the original images. Apple documents conversion and project visibility at its Photos project guide.

Printing at home instead of ordering online
Photos is an excellent library and project starting point, but it is not necessarily a complete folded-card layout tool for precise home printing. For a PDF, exact dimensions, multiple-up sheets, or a local printer, use a separate Mac layout or card-template application such as Orion Print Studio, then export or print according to that app’s instructions.
Ordering through an extension provides vendor cardstock, folding, and often envelopes, but adds production, shipping, regional limits, and possibly an account. Home printing offers immediate control and pickup but requires suitable paper, printer settings, trimming, and folding. Compare the provider’s destination-specific delivery estimate with your deadline before ordering.
Design and ordering checklist
- Use the highest-resolution originals available.
- Match portrait and landscape images to the chosen frame.
- Keep faces and critical text clear of trim and fold areas.
- Proof every panel, name, date, and punctuation mark.
- Confirm card size, orientation, paper, envelope, and quantity.
- Resolve all pre-flight warnings.
- Review tax, shipping, promotions, and the final total.
- Allow for production and shipping rather than assuming same-day delivery.
Troubleshooting common failures
The extension cannot see the photos
Confirm that the images are in the active Photos library and have finished syncing. In an iCloud Shared Photo Library, choose Both Libraries if needed, then select the photos directly before opening the project.

Photos are cropped badly
Choose a template with the matching orientation, reposition the image in its frame, and keep important subjects away from edges. Inspect every panel in the final preview.
Pre-flight fails
Look for empty placeholders, default text, missing photos, unavailable assets, or incomplete address and order fields.
The order costs more than expected
Compare flat and folded formats at the same quantity, inspect shipping before finalizing, and compare Motif and Mimeo using the same specifications. Treat coupons and free-card offers as temporary promotions with expiry dates and restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a greeting card without installing another app?
Not through the current Photos card workflow. Photos supplies the library and project entry point; a compatible third-party Project Extension supplies the card designer and ordering system.
Is Apple still printing cards directly?
Apple’s current public workflow directs users to third-party Project Extensions. Do not assume that older Apple-operated card ordering is still available.
Can I use an iCloud Shared Photo Library?
Yes. If the project’s photos are in the shared library, choose the appropriate library view—often Both Libraries—so Photos can display them.
Can I print the card at home?
Yes, but use a dedicated card or layout application for exact folded dimensions and PDF or printer output; Photos alone may not provide the required layout controls.
Can I convert an old Apple card project?
Only when the selected extension offers a Convert button. Review the converted design carefully, or recreate it manually if conversion is unavailable.
