You can make a compelling game trailer without generative AI by planning what viewers need to understand, capturing real footage from the game, and editing it into a clear, accurate sequence. Start with a shot list and storyboard, prepare repeatable gameplay moments, record several takes, then add concise titles and properly licensed audio. Finish by checking the trailer against the destination platform’s specifications and content policies.
1. Decide what the trailer needs to show
Choose the trailer’s purpose before recording. It might be a gameplay trailer, teaser, cinematic, or a combination. Give it one main takeaway: for example, the player’s central action, a distinctive mechanic, or the game’s setting and tone.

For a Steam store page, developers can categorize trailers as gameplay, teaser, cinematic/general, or a combination. Steam recommends that the first trailer be primarily gameplay and show what players will do from the perspective they will use to interact with the game. Steamworks trailer documentation

Write a short shot list that gives the trailer a readable sequence: establish what the game is, show the player action, then reveal the feature, challenge, or atmosphere that makes it distinctive. A shot list is a production blueprint; a storyboard helps you previsualize camera placement, environments, characters, and action. Epic Games’ trailer playbook discusses both tools.

You do not need elaborate drawings. Sketch frames, assemble stills from the game, or create a more polished board if the production calls for it. Prepare a build that makes the planned scenes repeatable: arrange save points, controlled encounters, and any camera or replay tools the game supports. These choices depend on the game and workflow; no single capture setup is necessary for every project.
3. Capture gameplay deliberately
Stage the actions from your shot list and record multiple takes. Keep the player’s objective and the game’s response visible; a spectacular image is not useful if viewers cannot tell what is happening. Gameplay capture can take patience, choreography, cinematography, and coordination, particularly when a scene involves several players or timed events.

Select the takes that explain the game most clearly. Vary shot scale and pacing when doing so helps viewers understand the action, setting, or change in gameplay. Use the game title and brief on-screen text where they add information rather than obscuring play. Music and sound effects can support the footage, but they should not make essential context impossible to follow.

Design for viewers who may encounter a trailer briefly or watch without audio. Steam specifically advises developers to consider short discovery contexts and muted viewing. Make sure the main idea still comes through visually, with readable titles and footage that communicates the player’s actions.

A trailer can use gameplay footage, live action, or pre-rendered material, but it should accurately reflect the game. ESRB’s internet-trailer guidance says promotional video should reflect the game’s true nature and should not supplement or exceed the pertinent content in the game. Its guidance also raises age-gating considerations for certain mature or Adults Only promotional videos. Review the ESRB ratings principles and guidelines for the applicable case.

Check the rights and policies for every game, asset, and publishing destination. Valve’s policy permits video uses of Valve game content under its terms, but says permission from the owner is needed when a video includes someone else’s material, such as music. Do not assume that permission for a game or one platform automatically covers third-party music, footage, logos, or other assets. Valve’s video policy
6. Export and review for the destination
Export settings are platform-specific. For Steam, the documentation recommends the highest resolution available up to 1920 × 1080, 30/29.97 or 60/59.94 fps, a high bitrate (5,000+ Kbps), H.264 video, AAC audio, and a preferred 16:9 aspect ratio; Steam also accepts 4:3. These are Steam recommendations, not universal settings for every video service.
Steam says the first two valid trailers appear before screenshots on the store page, and trailer processing must finish before the game can be released. Check the current Steamworks trailer documentation before delivery, and consult each other destination’s own specifications and policies.
Quick Recap
- Watch the exported file from beginning to end, including its opening seconds and ending card.
- Check that text is readable, the game is identifiable, and the central action remains understandable with audio muted.
- Confirm the image, audio, frame rate, and aspect ratio match the destination’s current requirements.
- Verify that the trailer represents the released or planned game accurately and that you have the necessary rights for included assets.
