The reliable way to make a Factions server is to run Minecraft: Java Edition on Paper, then install a Factions implementation such as FactionsUUID and configure claims, power, relationships, permissions, chat, and protection. You must also accept the Minecraft EULA, keep Minecraft/Paper/plugins on compatible versions, and handle firewall or port-forwarding changes if players connect from outside your network.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What a Factions server actually consists of
A Factions server is not a separate edition of Minecraft. It is a Java Edition server with a server implementation and plugins that add faction gameplay. The basic stack has four layers:

- Paper: a Java server implementation focused on performance and a plugin API.
- Factions plugin: FactionsUUID can provide faction creation, territory claims, protected land, alliances, enemies, and warfare.
- Supporting plugins and settings: permissions, economy, chat, maps, moderation, and backups, if your design needs them.
Players connect to the server address, create or join factions, earn or manage power, claim territory, and interact according to the rules you configure. There is no universal “Factions mode” switch: the experience comes from the combination of plugin settings, permissions, and server operations.
Choose Java Edition and a server platform
Use the Java server software
The official Minecraft server download is for Java Edition. Mojang’s server instructions also note that a compatible Java Runtime Environment is required to launch the JAR. Bedrock clients cannot join a Java server merely because a Factions plugin is installed; cross-play requires additional software and compatibility work that is outside this setup.

Download the server JAR for the Minecraft version you intend to run and keep it in a dedicated directory. Do not mix several server JARs, worlds, or plugin sets in one folder while you are learning. A clean directory makes backups, rollbacks, and troubleshooting much safer.
Why Paper is a practical base
Paper is a Java server implementation built for performance and plugin support. Its administration documentation describes plugins as the main extension mechanism and documents plugin metadata, dependencies, and commands. That makes Paper a practical base for a Factions server, but it does not make every plugin compatible automatically. Paper, Minecraft, and each plugin still have to support the same version.
Create the server directory and complete the first run
Perform the initial launch before installing Factions so the server can create its standard files. Run the JAR from a terminal opened in the server directory; the exact Java command depends on your operating system and the filename you downloaded.
- Create a dedicated folder. Place the Minecraft server JAR in a new folder with a short, stable path. Keep world data, logs, configuration, and backups associated with this folder.
- Launch the JAR once. Start it from a terminal rather than double-clicking so you can see errors and the server’s startup messages.
- Stop after the first generation pass. The first run creates files including
eula.txtandserver.properties. - Accept the EULA. Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save it, and close the file. The server will not run without this acceptance. - Edit basic properties. Open
server.propertiesand set the values appropriate for your server, such as the world name, difficulty, game mode, player limit, MOTD, and whether the server should advertise itself on the local network. Change only settings you understand, and keep a copy of the original file. - Start again and shut down cleanly. Let the world finish generating, then use the console’s normal stop command. A clean shutdown reduces the chance of corrupting world or plugin data.
Make a backup of the world folder and configuration before installing plugins or changing versions. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so plan a test restore on a separate copy before inviting players.
Install a matching Paper build
Select the Minecraft version first
Choose the Minecraft release that your community and plugins will use, then obtain the corresponding Paper build. Do not start with an old tutorial’s download links and try to make newer components fit around them. A Factions plugin can fail even when the server itself starts if its API or dependency expectations have changed.
Verify the startup output
Start Paper without Factions installed and read the console. You should see the expected Minecraft and Paper versions, a successful world load, and no Java runtime error. If Java is missing or incompatible, install a runtime supported by the selected Minecraft release before investigating plugins. Keep the complete startup log when asking for help; the first error is generally more useful than the final shutdown message.

Install FactionsUUID
Copy the plugin JAR
FactionsUUID supplies the core faction features: players can create factions, claim and protect territory, form alliances, designate enemies, and participate in warfare. Download the release that explicitly supports your Minecraft version, then place its JAR file directly in the server’s plugins folder. Do not unzip the JAR or put it inside an additional subfolder.
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the server’s
pluginsdirectory, creating it only if Paper has not already done so. - Copy the compatible FactionsUUID JAR into that directory.
- Start the server and watch the console for dependency, Java, or version errors.
- After the first successful plugin-enabled start, stop the server cleanly so you can review the generated configuration.
FactionsUUID creates default configuration files on first run. Treat those files as the authoritative settings for the installed release; options and names can change between releases.
Check the commands and permissions
Use the plugin’s documented command guidance rather than assuming commands from a different Factions fork. A typical setup needs a way to create, join, invite, promote, leave, disband, claim, unclaim, map, and manage faction relationships. Configure permissions through your chosen permissions system so ordinary players can use faction commands without receiving operator access.
Design the faction rules before changing settings
Write down the rules you want players to experience, then map each rule to a configuration or permission. This prevents contradictory settings that are difficult to explain later.

Faction identity and membership
- Set the naming rules and decide whether names must be unique, how long they may be, and whether special characters are permitted.
- Choose whether a faction description, home location, and public or private status are available.
- Set invitation, joining, kicking, promotion, demotion, and leadership behavior. Decide what happens if the leader leaves or the faction becomes inactive.
- Publish a clear policy for faction chat and staff visibility; private chat should not accidentally expose moderation tools to regular players.
Claims, power, and protection
Claims are the heart of the game. Decide how much territory a faction may hold, how power is gained or lost, what happens when a member dies, and whether territory can be overclaimed. Test the exact result with a non-operator account before launch.
Configure whether non-members can build, break blocks, open containers, use doors, interact with entities, or damage players inside a claim. Protection that covers building but not containers, redstone, or entity interaction can create surprising loopholes. Also decide how wilderness behaves, including whether players can build, use buckets, or ignite blocks outside claims.

Safe zones and war zones
Use administrative areas for spawn and event spaces. FactionsUUID support documents claim commands such as /f claim --faction safezone and /f claim --faction warzone. Confirm the exact syntax for your installed release before using it in production.
- Safe zone: normally protects a spawn or neutral area from ordinary faction control and combat rules.
- War zone: can define territory where special combat, building, or event rules apply.
Do not assume these labels automatically produce the rules you want. Verify block protection, PvP, explosions, container access, and faction commands in each area.

Alliances, truces, and enemies
Decide which relationships are available and what each relationship changes. An alliance might permit coordinated access or communication; a truce may reduce accidental damage without granting full access; an enemy relationship may enable combat or raiding. Test every relationship in both directions, because permissions that work for one faction may not work identically for the other.
Add supporting systems carefully
Permissions
A permissions plugin lets you separate player, moderator, administrator, and console capabilities. Give players only the faction commands they need. Reserve claim bypass, force commands, and safe-zone management for staff. Test with a newly created account that is not an operator; an operator account can hide permission mistakes.
Economy
If claims, homes, war declarations, or upgrades cost money, choose one economy provider and confirm that FactionsUUID supports the exact provider version. Define prices and income sources together so players cannot create money through a command loop. If you do not need an economy, leave economy-dependent features disabled rather than installing an unnecessary dependency.
Chat
FactionsUUID can use built-in Paper chat integration. Its support documentation also explains that this integration can be disabled when another chat plugin handles formatting or channels. Use one system as the authority for prefixes, faction chat, ally chat, and staff channels; two systems competing for the same chat event can produce duplicated or missing messages.

Maps and protection integrations
Map displays, land-claim overlays, combat controls, and logging tools can improve administration, but every additional plugin adds another compatibility and backup obligation. Install one integration at a time, restart, and test claims before adding the next. Keep a written list of every JAR and its version.
Match versions before opening the server
Version compatibility is the most common reason a seemingly correct Factions setup fails. Treat Minecraft, Paper, FactionsUUID, permissions, economy, and chat as one tested set.
| Component | What must match | Evidence or action |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft server | The Java Edition release selected for the world | Choose this first and record the exact version. |
| Paper | A build supporting that Minecraft release | Check Paper’s release information and startup log. |
| FactionsUUID 4.3.0 | Minecraft 1.21.10 | The release notes published November 25, 2025 state that it requires 1.21.10 and will not run on older versions. |
| FactionsUUID 4.6.0 | Its own documented supported versions and upgrade behavior | The release notes published June 28, 2026 describe additional upgrade and Vault behavior changes; read them before upgrading. |
| Supporting plugins | Their stated Paper/Minecraft and dependency requirements | Read each plugin’s metadata, dependency list, and release notes before copying its JAR. |
Never replace a working plugin JAR on the live server without a backup and a rollback plan. For an upgrade, copy the complete server directory or at least the world and all configuration, test the new set on a staging copy, read the release notes for breaking changes, and only then schedule the production change.
Let friends connect from outside your home
Understand the networking requirement
Players on the same local network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Players elsewhere need a reachable public address and a server port allowed through the host firewall and, on many home networks, forwarded by the router to the server computer. The official Minecraft guidance warns that home-network setup changes network configuration and is not recommended unless the operator understands the implications.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation on the router.
- Confirm the port configured in
server.properties. Avoid changing it unless you have a reason; document any custom value. - Create a firewall rule allowing that port for the Java server, limited to the required network profile.
- Forward the same port on the router to the server computer’s local address.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing from inside the same LAN can succeed even when the public route is misconfigured.
- Share only the public address and port that players need. Do not expose administrative panels, remote console services, or file shares.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections, making ordinary port forwarding ineffective. In that case, use a managed host or a networking method designed for your provider rather than repeatedly opening unrelated ports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control but makes you responsible for Java, updates, networking, storage, security, and recovery. Managed hosting can remove much of the local firewall and port-forwarding work, but you still need to verify plugin support and maintain the server’s configuration.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
| Decision area | Self-hosted at home | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Java and versions | You install the runtime and select compatible Minecraft and Paper builds. | The provider may offer version selectors; confirm that your required Java, Minecraft, Paper, and FactionsUUID releases are available. |
| Backups | You schedule, store, and test world/configuration backups. | Ask whether backups are automatic, how long they are retained, where they are stored, and whether you can download and restore them. |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding, public addressing, and outages. | The provider normally supplies a reachable address, but you still configure whitelist, permissions, and server security. |
| Plugins | You control every JAR and can inspect logs directly. | Check how plugins are uploaded, whether custom JARs are allowed, and whether support will troubleshoot plugin conflicts. |
| Performance and capacity | Limited by your hardware, storage, power, and connection; no universal player capacity is established here. | Compare allocated resources, storage, network limits, and upgrade options rather than relying on a generic player number. |
| Security and support | You apply updates, restrict access, monitor logs, and respond to attacks or failures. | Compare isolation, DDoS controls, account security, monitoring, response times, and the scope of technical support. |
Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable administering Java, a firewall, a router, backups, and plugin updates. Choose managed hosting when reducing maintenance and local networking work matters more than having physical control of the machine. In either case, keep your own copy of the world and configuration.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSecure and operate the server
- Use a strong, unique account password and do not share operator credentials.
- Give staff the minimum permissions needed for their jobs, and review the operator list regularly.
- Keep Minecraft, Paper, FactionsUUID, and supporting plugins updated, but test updates before production.
- Schedule world and configuration backups and retain more than one restore point.
- Watch the console after every restart for dependency, version, permission, and database errors.
- Document the server version, Java version, plugin JAR filenames, configuration changes, and backup locations.
- Have a written rollback procedure: stop the server, restore the previous JARs and data, start, and verify claims and player inventories.
Test the player experience before launch
Use a staging copy or a quiet test window and perform the following checks with both an operator and a normal player account:
- Create a test faction, invite a second account, promote and demote a member, then remove the member.
- Claim land, verify the displayed map or claim status, unclaim it, and confirm that ownership changes as expected.
- Attempt to build, break blocks, open containers, use doors, interact with entities, and trigger redstone as a faction member and as a non-member.
- Test safe-zone and war-zone boundaries, including PvP, explosions, block interaction, and faction commands.
- Test ally, truce, and enemy relationships in both directions.
- Check faction chat, public chat, staff chat, prefixes, and any external formatting integration.
- Confirm that power loss, death, leaving, and inactivity produce the outcomes described in your rules.
- Restore a backup to a separate directory and verify that the world, claims, configuration, and inventories are usable.
- Read the entire startup and shutdown log and resolve warnings that identify missing dependencies or unsupported versions.
No universal hardware benchmark or player-capacity number is established for this setup. Capacity depends on the Minecraft release, Paper build, world activity, plugin workload, storage, CPU, memory, network, and player behavior, so measure your own staged workload rather than promising a fixed number.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server stops immediately and mentions the EULA
Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start again. If the file keeps reverting, check that you are editing the file in the directory from which the JAR is actually being launched.
Paper starts but FactionsUUID does not load
Read the first plugin error in the console. Check that the JAR is directly in plugins, that the filename is not a partially downloaded file, that required dependencies are installed, and that the plugin supports your exact Minecraft/Paper version. FactionsUUID 4.3.0, for example, requires Minecraft 1.21.10 and will not run on older versions.
Commands are unknown or players cannot use them
Confirm that the plugin loaded successfully, use the command syntax documented for your release, and inspect permissions with a non-operator account. If a chat or permissions plugin intercepts commands, disable one integration temporarily and retest.
Claims do not protect the expected blocks
Test each interaction separately. Review faction relation settings, wilderness rules, safe-zone/war-zone assignments, and any protection or logging integration. A claim may protect building while leaving containers, entities, or redstone governed by another setting.
Friends cannot connect
Test locally first, then from another network. Confirm the server is listening on the intended port, the host firewall allows it, the router forwards it to the correct local address, and your internet provider permits inbound connections. If your connection uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work.
