Spotify’s Create Cover Art tool lets you design a playlist cover inside the mobile app using your own photos, text, colors, gradients, masks, effects and stickers. Spotify announced the beta on October 22, 2024 for Free and Premium users in 65 markets. The “brat summer” connection is an aesthetic description of what the editor can produce—not the feature’s official name and not evidence of a Charli XCX partnership.
What Spotify’s Create Cover Art feature does
Spotify previously let playlist owners upload a custom image. Create Cover Art adds a lightweight editor so you can compose the artwork without leaving Spotify. The documented tools include:
- Photos from your phone’s camera roll or device storage
- Spotify Mix type styles, text colors and text effects
- Solid background colors and gradients
- Image masks and visual effects
- Graphic elements and sticker collections
It is a manual collage and layout tool, not an automatic illustration made from your playlist’s songs. Spotify’s announcement does not describe text-prompt image generation or market Create Cover Art as an AI art generator. Spotify’s launch announcement lists the editing features directly.
Why the result can feel like “brat summer”
“Brat summer” is useful shorthand for a loud, minimal, deliberately rough visual mood: high-impact color, oversized typography, stark contrast and collage-like layers. Spotify’s editor makes those choices possible, so you can create a Brat-adjacent look with an acid-green-inspired background, black type, a simple photo treatment and one or two stickers.

That comparison should not be confused with an official campaign. Spotify announced Create Cover Art as a general personalization feature and did not identify it as a Charli XCX or Brat collaboration. If you want that mood, make an original design rather than copying official album artwork or implying endorsement.
How to create a custom Spotify playlist cover
The labels have changed as Spotify has updated playlist controls. Try the original beta route first, then the current Edit-based route:

- Open the Spotify app on an iPhone or Android phone.
- Open a playlist you created yourself, or make a new personal playlist.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Create cover art. If that option is absent, tap Edit at the top of the playlist and look for the cover-art customization control instead.
- Start with a blank design or choose an original photo from your device.
- Apply text, colors, gradients, masks, effects and available stickers.
- Preview the square cover at a small size, then save it.
Spotify’s launch instructions document the three-dot path, while its current support page directs users through playlist editing in the app: Customize your playlist cover.
Design tips for a bold, readable cover
- Use one dominant color. A vivid green or another high-contrast background gives the cover immediate identity.
- Keep the title short. Oversized lettering remains legible when the cover is reduced to a small thumbnail.
- Limit the layers. One focal image and a couple of graphic elements usually read more clearly than a crowded collage.
- Check contrast. Make sure the text separates from the photo or gradient behind it.
- Use your own or licensed images. Avoid uploading promotional artwork you do not have permission to reuse.
Who can access it—and which playlists qualify?
Spotify’s October 2024 beta covered both Free and Premium accounts in 65 markets and required the iOS or Android mobile app. Spotify has since announced additional regional availability, including Brazil in October 2025, so access now depends on your market, account, app version and rollout status. The Brazil expansion announcement illustrates why availability should not be treated as universal.

The documented requirement is a playlist you personally created. Spotify does not promise identical controls for editorial playlists, Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes, algorithmically generated playlists or playlists owned by someone else. Collaborative playlists may also vary depending on ownership and account access; test the feature on a personal playlist first.
The verified route is mobile. Spotify’s launch materials and current support instructions do not establish equivalent Create Cover Art editing on desktop.

The important limitation: one saved cover
Spotify documents one custom cover per playlist. Saving a new design replaces the existing custom cover; there is no documented in-app version history or gallery of previous designs. Export or screenshot a version you may want to reuse before replacing it.

Spotify is the convenient option when the goal is a quick personal cover. A dedicated editor is more appropriate when you need precise alignment, reusable templates, multiple variants, transparent exports, print-quality files, desktop-first work or generative artwork. Spotify has not specified Create Cover Art’s export resolution, file-format choices or version-history functions.

What to do if “Create cover art” is missing
- Update Spotify from your phone’s app store.
- Open a playlist you personally created, not an editorial or automatically generated playlist.
- Check both the three-dot menu and the Edit control at the top of the playlist.
- Force-close Spotify, reopen it and try again.
- Create a new personal playlist and test there.
- If the control remains absent, your account or market may not have access yet; there is no confirmed hidden setting that enables it.
Spotify has continued adding artwork assets
The feature has expanded beyond its initial toolset. In February 2025, Spotify announced 10 exclusive Tyler, The Creator sticker designs inspired by CHROMAKOPIA, IGOR and Flower Boy, showing that playlist artwork is an ongoing creative platform rather than a one-time beta experiment. Bottom line
Create Cover Art is a useful, mobile-first way to give a personal playlist a distinctive look. It can easily produce the high-contrast, rough-edged collage associated with “brat summer,” but it is neither an official Brat tie-in nor a documented AI generator. Use Spotify for speed and convenience; move to Canva or Adobe Express when you need reusable layouts, saved variants or professional export control.
