Edit for the placement, check every advertising claim and disclosure, and review the finished version on the screen where people will see it. The workflow below covers a practical production from brief to release, whether you film with a phone or a dedicated camera.
1. Write a brief before you film
A one-page brief keeps the video focused and gives you a basis for making production decisions. Record:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Audience: Who should watch, and what problem, need, or desire brings them to the video?
- Offer: What product, service, event, or proposition are you advertising?
- Main message: What is the single idea viewers should remember?
- Viewer action: What should they do next, such as visit a page, ask for a quote, or learn more?
- Placement: Where will the video run—YouTube, another social platform, a website, broadcast, or several placements?
- Requirements: Note brand elements, rights and permissions, legal disclosures, and any product or offer details that must appear.
- Success measure: Decide what you will review after publishing in light of the campaign goal. There is no single metric or budget that fits every campaign.
Use the placement to guide choices such as aspect ratio, framing, length, and delivery format. Avoid planning a single master version on the assumption that every service displays video in the same way.

2. Build the idea and script around one benefit
Give the viewer a reason to keep watching, make the advertised product or service understandable, and end with one concrete next step. A simple structure is a hook, a problem or desire, a demonstration or explanation, and a call to action. The story can be as small as one useful product demonstration; it does not need extra scenes that do not clarify the message.

Open with something the audience can grasp quickly
Start with a relevant image, question, problem, or demonstration rather than a long introduction. Google’s YouTube ad production guide recommends a hook and two or more shots in the first five seconds as a creative approach. That is platform-oriented guidance, not a guarantee of results or a rule for every placement. The guide also prints the figure that 95% of YouTube videos have sound on; treat that as a figure stated by the guide, not an independently verified or universal viewing statistic. Plan to make the opening understandable with sound while still making essential visuals clear.
Make the brand and action clear
Integrate the brand naturally into the story—for example, through the product in use, a relevant brand reference, or a clear end card. State the call to action in direct language and show the destination or next step accurately. If the script makes an objective claim, obtain an appropriate basis for it before filming or publishing; the FTC’s U.S. small-business guidance says advertisers need a reasonable basis for claims before an ad runs, with the evidence depending on the claim. See the FTC advertising FAQ for small businesses.
3. Plan the shoot so the edit has options
Turn the script into a shot list and schedule. Identify locations, talent, permissions, props, wardrobe, product shots, voiceover, sound needs, and a backup plan for anything that could prevent filming. A camera, crew, or elaborate set is not automatically necessary; choose equipment and help according to the placement, skills, schedule, and total cost.

Make a shot list
- List the essential story beats in order: opening, product or service explanation, proof or demonstration, and call to action.
- Include the subject or product in use, tight product and talent shots, and supporting B-roll that adds useful context.
- Plan alternate opening shots and alternate calls to action where time allows, so the edit can use the version that best fits the placement.
- Capture close-ups and extra footage that could support shorter or alternate cuts.
Prepare the scene and sound
Make the subject and product easy to see. Google’s YouTube-oriented guide recommends good lighting and contrast between the set, wardrobe, and props; it also advises planning for early audio and additional footage. Check whether clothing, backgrounds, or props distract from the message, and make dialogue or voiceover intelligible. These are production recommendations, not a promise of ad performance.

4. Capture the essential material
- Record the opening and core message. Capture the planned hook, then the explanation or demonstration that communicates the main benefit.
- Show the product or service in context. Get the wide or medium view needed to understand the action and close-ups that show important details.
- Record the brand and call to action. Film the required brand references and a direct CTA. Capture an alternate take if practical.
- Get B-roll and natural sound. Record supporting details, environment, and useful sound that can smooth edits or clarify the setting.
- Check the footage on location. Review framing, exposure, focus, sound, and whether small-screen viewers can read any essential text. Fix problems while the scene and talent are still available.
Keep permissions and usage rights in view, including those for locations, music, images, and people appearing in the video. Do not assume that material found online is cleared for a commercial use.
5. Edit for the intended placement
Build one clear narrative from the best takes. Remove redundant or confusing material, make the dialogue intelligible against music, use readable titles, and finish with the promised next step. Make separate versions when the placements need different crops or orientations; keep faces and important text within safe areas so they remain visible after cropping.
Review the picture, sound, and crop
Watch the rough cut on a mobile device and inspect the actual framing for each intended placement. Google’s guide recommends reviewing on a mobile device or using Google Ads Preview. Check that captions or titles are legible, the message still works without relying on tiny details, and the CTA remains visible and accurate.
YouTube export recommendations in Google’s guide
For YouTube output, Google’s production guide recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. It lists example bitrates of 35–45 Mbps for 4K 30 SDR and 8 Mbps for 1080p 30 SDR, and notes that 16:9, vertical, and square formats are possible. These are recommendations in a YouTube-focused guide, not universal requirements for every platform or a substitute for checking the current specifications of your intended placement.

6. Check advertising claims and disclosures
Review the complete video as viewers will encounter it: spoken words, on-screen text, demonstrations, testimonials, images, and what the edit leaves out. The FTC’s U.S. guidance says advertising claims must be truthful and substantiated, and objective claims need a reasonable basis before the ad runs. Health and safety claims generally call for competent and reliable scientific evidence under that guidance. Obligations vary by jurisdiction and product category, so get qualified review for specialized or high-risk claims. Read the FTC guidance on advertising and marketing alongside its small-business advertising FAQ.
Endorsements and paid promotion
If the video includes an endorsement or paid relationship, make any required disclosure clear and understandable. FTC guidance for U.S. social media endorsements says a video disclosure should appear in the video itself, not only in its description; using both visual and spoken notice can help viewers notice it. See FTC Disclosures 101. YouTube also provides a paid-promotion declaration workflow for paid placements, endorsements, sponsorships, and other commercial relationships. Use the platform setting where applicable, but do not assume its label fulfills every legal disclosure obligation. See YouTube’s paid-promotion help.
7. Publish, verify, and learn
- Upload or deliver the version made for the selected placement and check that its crop, sound, text, and playback are correct.
- Verify that links, offer details, landing pages, and the call to action lead to the intended destination.
- Review the campaign against the goal in your brief rather than an assumed universal benchmark.
- If trying alternate openings or calls to action, vary a manageable number of elements and interpret results in context of the audience and placement. Google’s guide suggests capturing varied close-ups to enable creative A/B testing on YouTube; it does not establish a universal test duration or performance benchmark.
