Choose a room that fits everyone, close its windows and doors without blocking an exit, keep it cool, and filter the air. Use a portable air cleaner sized for the room, a compatible central HVAC filter, or—temporarily—a carefully assembled box-fan cleaner. Avoid activities that add particles indoors, and leave for a safer place if smoke or heat makes staying home unsafe. A cleaner-air room can reduce exposure; it cannot guarantee smoke-free air.

What a cleaner-air room does—and what it cannot do

A cleaner-air room is a part of the home set up to limit wildfire smoke entering and to remove some of the particles already in the air. It can be useful when you cannot make the whole home cleaner, or when you need a place to spend more time during a smoke event. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says anyone can benefit from spending time in one, as long as it is safe to stay indoors at home. Read EPA’s home guidance for creating a cleaner-air room.

It is not an airtight refuge or a promise of smoke-free air. Smoke can enter through openings, and indoor sources can add particles. The degree of protection varies by home, equipment, and how the room is used. One EPA summary of wildfire-event studies found that indoor PM2.5 in closed homes without portable air cleaners averaged about 55% to 60% of outdoor PM2.5, with results ranging from about 30% to 100% across homes. That is a study-based range, not a prediction for your room or a measure of the protection any one setup will provide. See EPA’s overview of strategies to reduce indoor exposure.

The room works as part of a practical plan: limit new smoke coming in, filter airborne particles, avoid making additional particles indoors, and use the space when conditions outside are smoky. These measures can reduce exposure, but no single room choice or filter setting guarantees a particular indoor air quality. Keep heat, safe exits, and local emergency instructions in the decision rather than treating smoke reduction as the only goal.

Set up the room in this order

  1. Choose a room people can use comfortably. Pick a room large enough for everyone who may need it, with as few windows and doors as practical. A bedroom with an attached bathroom can be convenient if you will spend long periods there. Keep the route to an exit clear; do not seal or arrange the room in a way that makes an emergency escape difficult.
  2. Close paths where smoke can enter. Shut the room’s windows and doors during smoky conditions. Limit use of an exhaust fan or range hood in the room because it can pull air from elsewhere in the home. Do not block vents, doors, or exits as a way to make the room seem more sealed.
  3. Keep the room cool while limiting outdoor air intake. Use a fan, window air conditioner, or central air conditioning as appropriate. If your heating or cooling system has a fresh-air intake or outdoor-air option, close it or select recirculation during smoky periods if the system permits. Do not assume every system has the same controls: check its instructions if you are unsure which setting recirculates indoor air.
  4. Add filtration. Choose a portable room air cleaner, a compatible central HVAC filter, or a temporary DIY box-fan cleaner. You can combine room filtration with central filtration if the equipment is compatible and can be operated safely.
  5. Stop adding particles indoors. Avoid smoking or vaping; candles and incense; aerosol sprays; gas-, propane-, or wood-burning devices; and frying, broiling, or other high-heat or prolonged cooking. Avoid vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter. Damp-wipe or mop settled dust rather than stirring it back into the air.
  6. Spend time there while smoke is present. Use the room as much as practical during the event. When outdoor air quality improves—even temporarily—air out the room or home to clear remaining smoky air, then close up again if conditions worsen.

EPA’s current home guidance covers room choice, limiting smoke entry, cooling, filtration, and reducing indoor particle sources. A room with fewer windows and doors may be easier to manage, but do not choose one that is too small for the people who need it or that compromises an emergency exit.

Choose a filtration option that suits your home

The main choices differ in whether they use a room appliance, existing forced-air equipment, or a temporary fan-and-filter assembly. The comparison below summarizes EPA and CDC guidance; it does not predict how much any particular room’s particle level will fall.

Option When it fits Key selection or setup point Limitations to account for
Portable room air cleaner You need filtration for a particular room, whether or not the home has central forced-air HVAC. Choose tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. Use a unit certified by the California Air Resources Board to limit ozone emissions. Noise and replacement-filter expense may affect whether people keep using it. The cited EPA guidance does not state a general purchase price or recurring filter cost.
Central HVAC filter The home has a forced-air heating or cooling system that can accommodate a higher-efficiency filter. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher if the system can use it. Check compatibility with the manufacturer or an HVAC technician. Compatibility is system-specific. Heavy smoke can mean filters need checking and replacement earlier than usual.
DIY box-fan cleaner A portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, and you can assemble and operate the device safely. A typical design uses a 20 × 20-inch box fan and same-size high-efficiency filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, attached securely with airflow aligned to the filter arrow. Use as a temporary alternative, not a permanent replacement for tested commercial equipment. Performance varies with design and assembly; never leave the unit unattended.

EPA’s filtration recommendations are collected in Indoor Air Filtration. Its guidance describes DIY filtration as a potentially effective, less expensive option when portable cleaners are unavailable or unaffordable, but favors tested commercial equipment as the more standardized choice when available. EPA also reports that multiple studies found well-built DIY cleaners can perform similarly to commercial portable cleaners at reducing airborne particles; actual results vary between builds. See EPA’s clean-room guidance and its research summary on DIY air cleaners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As a quick decision sequence, first consider whether you have forced-air HVAC and whether its manufacturer says it can use MERV 13 or higher. If not, or if you want filtration focused on one room, compare portable cleaners by tobacco-smoke CADR, ozone certification, noise, and replacement-filter expense. If a commercial portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, a DIY fan-and-filter assembly may be a temporary fallback, provided you can match the parts and supervise it safely. These options can also be combined where compatible; none removes the need to keep the room cool and avoid indoor particle sources.

Costs need to be considered, but the EPA guidance cited here does not give a universal purchase price or replacement-filter expense for portable models, nor a general replacement schedule. Check the specific product and filter specifications before choosing. For a DIY build, the phrase “20 x 20 MERV 13 air filter” describes a common component, not a universal fit: dimensions, thickness, and airflow direction must suit the fan design.

Size a portable air cleaner to the room

For this smoke-specific recommendation, compare the unit’s tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the room’s floor area. EPA’s rule is a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. The example on its home guidance is a 10 × 12-foot room, or 120 square feet: the recommended minimum tobacco-smoke CADR is 80. It is a sizing rule, not a promise that the room will reach a particular particle concentration or health outcome.

  1. Measure the floor. Multiply room length by width in feet. For an irregular room, measure sections and add their areas.
  2. Calculate the minimum CADR. Multiply the area in square feet by two-thirds. For 120 square feet, that gives 80; for a 240-square-foot room, the same calculation gives a minimum of 160.
  3. Check the tobacco-smoke CADR on the unit’s rating. Use the tobacco-smoke figure rather than choosing by the appliance’s appearance or a broad claim that it is suitable for a room.
  4. Check ozone certification and practical use. EPA advises a device certified by the California Air Resources Board to limit ozone emissions. Consider noise and the cost of replacement filters as part of the decision, because a cleaner that is too loud or costly to maintain may not be used consistently.
  5. Run it as recommended. EPA advises running the cleaner continuously at the highest fan setting if practical during smoky conditions. If noise or other constraints require a lower setting, use the highest setting you can sustain and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

The EPA sizing rule and example appear in How to Create a Cleaner Air Room at Home. The guidance does not establish a universal purchase price, filter replacement interval, or performance result for every model, so check the device’s specifications and maintenance directions. CADR helps you compare a cleaner with a room’s area; it should not be read as a guarantee of a specific health benefit or indoor PM2.5 level.

Use a central HVAC filter only if the system supports it

If your home has forced-air heating or cooling, EPA recommends a filter marked MERV 13 or higher when the system can use that filter. MERV is a filter-efficiency rating; the important practical condition is compatibility. A higher-rated filter is not automatically a safe upgrade for every furnace, air handler, or cooling system. Check the equipment documentation or ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician before changing the filter specification.

During smoky periods, run the system fan as often as practical so air passes through the filter. Check the filter frequently: heavy smoke can make it necessary to replace it earlier than its ordinary schedule. Follow the system and filter makers’ directions for installation and replacement. EPA’s indoor filtration guidance addresses MERV ratings and compatibility.

This option depends on having forced-air equipment, and an HVAC filter is not a reason to skip room-level steps such as closing windows and limiting indoor particle sources. If the system cannot accommodate MERV 13 or higher, do not force an upgrade; use a compatible filtration path instead. If you are unsure about the model or filter fit, get guidance from the manufacturer or an HVAC technician rather than guessing.

Build and operate a DIY box-fan cleaner cautiously

A DIY cleaner can be a fallback if a portable room cleaner is not available or affordable. EPA’s illustrated basic design attaches one 20 × 20-inch filter to a 20-inch box fan. Use a high-efficiency filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, that matches the intended fan design. Attach it securely with an appropriate method such as clamps, duct tape, or bungee cords, and align the filter’s airflow arrow as directed. Filter thickness and fit depend on the design, so do not treat one size as universal for every fan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the fan. EPA calls for a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark. Follow the fan manufacturer’s safety instructions.
  2. Match the filter to the design. A 20 × 20-inch filter is typical for the illustrated 20-inch-fan design. Confirm its dimensions and thickness fit the fan and that the airflow arrow points in the correct direction.
  3. Secure the filter. Use clamps, duct tape, or bungee cords to prevent gaps or the filter coming loose. The attachment should not interfere with the fan’s safe operation.
  4. Use it only while attended. CDC says never to leave a DIY box-fan filtration unit unattended. Keep it in a location where people can monitor it, and follow all manufacturer safety directions.

DIY performance depends on the design and assembly, so two builds may not clean air equally. EPA’s studies summary says well-built DIY cleaners can reduce airborne particles at levels similar to commercial portable cleaners in multiple studies, but commercial units have more standardized performance testing. Consult EPA’s DIY air-cleaner research page, its illustrated clean-room guidance, and the CDC wildfire smoke safety guidance.

The DIY option is a tradeoff rather than a direct equivalent in testing: EPA identifies it as a potentially effective, less expensive alternative when a portable cleaner is not available or affordable, while also noting variation from one build to another. Do not assume a fan and filter will produce the same result as a tested commercial unit in every room. Use the specified kind of fan and a filter that fits the chosen design, and avoid leaving the assembly running when no one can monitor it.

Keep heat and emergency safety in the decision

Closing windows can help limit smoke entry, but a room that becomes dangerously hot is not a safe refuge. Use air conditioning if available and operate it as appropriate for the equipment. If the system has a fresh-air intake, use recirculation or close the intake during smoky conditions when possible. Do not stay in a hot home simply to keep windows shut: if it is not safe or tolerable to keep the home cool, follow local guidance and move to a more suitable shelter.

Keep an exit usable even when the room is closed off. If local authorities issue an evacuation instruction, follow it; a cleaner-air room is not a reason to delay leaving. During an event, consult current AirNow information and state or local air-quality alerts and emergency directions. EPA’s wildfire clean-room guidance addresses what to do if you cannot keep the home cool.

Room setup is conditional on the home remaining a safe place to stay. If power fails, smoke continues entering, or heat makes the room intolerable, a cleaner-air room cannot solve those problems. Check current local alerts and follow emergency guidance about safer shelter or evacuation. If air quality temporarily improves, opening windows to cool or air out the home may be an option; check current conditions and close them again if smoke returns.

What to do when the smoke clears temporarily

When outdoor air quality improves, air out the room or home to clear smoky air that remains indoors. The improvement may be temporary, so check local air-quality updates before opening windows and be ready to close them again if smoke returns. Continue avoiding particle-producing activities while the room is being used as a cleaner-air space. Once the smoke event has passed, inspect and maintain filters according to the instructions for the HVAC system, air cleaner, or fan-and-filter assembly.

During a smoke event, keep using the filtration equipment according to its directions and check the relevant filters more often than you might during ordinary conditions. EPA specifically notes that heavy smoke can require earlier HVAC filter replacement. For portable cleaners, follow the model’s maintenance instructions; the EPA guidance does not specify one replacement interval that applies to every unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a cleaner-air room for wildfire smoke?

Choose a comfortable room large enough for everyone, with few windows and doors. Close them during smoky conditions without blocking an exit, keep the room cool, close a fresh-air intake or select recirculation if the system permits, and use a suitable air cleaner or compatible HVAC filtration. Avoid indoor activities that add particles and spend as much time in the room as practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What size portable air cleaner do I need?

EPA’s rule is a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. A 120-square-foot room calls for at least 80 tobacco-smoke CADR. Also look for a unit certified by the California Air Resources Board to limit ozone emissions, and consider noise and replacement-filter expense.

Can I use a MERV 13 filter in my furnace or central air system?

Only if the equipment can accommodate it. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher for forced-air systems when compatible, but compatibility varies. Check the manufacturer’s documentation or ask an HVAC technician before upgrading, and check filters frequently during heavy smoke.

Is a DIY box-fan air cleaner safe and effective?

EPA describes it as a potentially effective, less expensive temporary option when a portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable. Use a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark and a correctly fitted high-efficiency filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher. Performance varies by assembly, follow manufacturer safety directions, and never leave the unit unattended.

What if the room gets too hot with the windows closed?

Use air conditioning if available, and close the system’s outdoor-air intake or choose recirculation if possible. If the home cannot be kept cool or safe, do not stay inside just to keep smoke out. Follow local guidance and move to a more suitable shelter; obey any evacuation instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I open windows when outdoor air improves?

When air quality improves, even temporarily, airing out the room or home can clear remaining smoky air. Check current AirNow information and local air-quality updates first, because conditions can change; close windows again if smoke returns.

How much does a cleaner-air room or air cleaner cost?

The EPA guidance cited here does not give a universal purchase price or replacement-filter cost. Compare the specifications and ongoing filter expense for specific portable units. EPA describes DIY box-fan filtration as a potentially less expensive fallback, but its parts must fit the fan design and it is not a permanent replacement for tested commercial equipment.

The Bottom Line

Set up a room that fits everyone, limit smoke entry without blocking an exit, keep it cool, and use compatible filtration. For a portable cleaner, match tobacco-smoke CADR to the room and check ozone certification; use MERV 13 or higher in central HVAC only when compatible. Treat a box-fan cleaner as a temporary, attended fallback. If the home is too hot or unsafe, follow local alerts and move to a safer place.
