To make a busy board safer for a toddler, keep it sturdy and simple: avoid detachable small parts, loose cords or straps, accessible batteries, and loose high-powered magnets. Choose features suited to the child’s age and abilities, supervise play, and inspect the board regularly. These practical checks can reduce identifiable hazards, but they do not certify a homemade board as safe.
Remove choking hazards, including parts that can break off
Check every feature, fastener, and attachment—not just the pieces that look small. A part that detaches or breaks during play can become a choking hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) defines a small part for its rules by whether it fits entirely inside a small-parts cylinder, which approximates the fully expanded throat of a child under three. The rules also account for parts liberated during simulated use or abuse testing; an informal check at home is not a substitute for that testing or a safety certification. CPSC small-parts guidance.

Keep keys, padlocks, knobs, or other detachable pieces off a toddler’s board if they could come loose. In a product-specific UK case published on 17 July 2025, the Office for Product Safety and Standards reported that keys and a padlock on busy board model TYBB001 fit in the small-parts cylinder. Separately, on 17 October 2024, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using and dispose of Kindly Toys Customized Busy Board Toys because parts could break off and create choking hazards. These cases concern specific products, not every busy board.
Keep cords and straps out of reach
Do not add loose ropes, strings, phone cords, or straps that a child could reach, pull around their neck, or become tangled in. The CPSC warns that toy strings and straps can strangle young children. CPSC toy-safety education.

The same UK report identified a top rope and phone cord on model TYBB001 that exceeded the 300 mm limit referenced in that report and could tangle. That finding is specific to the reported board and should not be treated as a universal DIY measurement standard.
Prevent access to batteries and magnets
Avoid button or coin batteries on a homemade toddler board. If a feature uses batteries, the compartment must remain securely closed and inaccessible during play; do not use a feature if its cover is loose, damaged, or can be opened by the child. The UK report found battery-operated features on model TYBB001 with no screw securing the compartment, leaving batteries accessible.

Follow age guidance and warnings for any commercial board or component, and consider whether the toddler can use each feature as intended. Age recommendations help assess both safety and developmental suitability, according to the AAP. If you are adapting or making a board, use the same questions for each feature: can the child pull it free, put it in their mouth, reach a cord, or open a battery compartment? Remove anything that creates one of those risks rather than relying on the child not to touch it.
Inspect the board and stop using it if it is damaged
Check the board before play and periodically during use. Look for loose fasteners, cracked or splintering material, sharp edges, detached parts, frayed cords, and damaged battery compartments. If anything loosens, cracks, breaks, or becomes accessible, take the board out of use until the hazard is removed; discard it if it cannot be made sound again. This follows AAP advice to ensure parts and edges are secure and addresses the breakage and detachment hazards documented in the product warnings.

What these checks can—and cannot—establish
There is no universal DIY busy-board design, mounting method, material specification, or certification checklist established by the sources cited here. CPSC small-parts rules involve testing, and product requirements vary by jurisdiction. Caregiver checks are useful for spotting obvious hazards, but they do not show that a homemade board has passed formal compliance testing.
