To create a bootable macOS 27 Golden Gate USB installer, download the full installer into Applications, connect an empty USB drive, name its volume MyVolume, then run Apple’s createinstallmedia command in Terminal. The process erases the selected drive. A bootable installer is useful for recovery or repeated installs, but Apple says you do not need one for a normal upgrade or reinstall.
Decide whether you need a bootable installer
A bootable installer lets you start a compatible Mac from external media. Apple describes it as useful when other installation methods fail or when installing macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time. For an ordinary upgrade, Software Update is Apple’s fastest and easiest route; its built-in update flow avoids preparing and erasing a USB drive. Apple says macOS 27 Golden Gate is compatible with Macs using Apple silicon, including M-series or A-series chips. Check the current compatibility guidance for the exact Mac model before starting, and back up important data before upgrading. A bootable installer does not make an unsupported Mac compatible.

Download the full installer using Apple’s instructions, which offer Terminal, the App Store, or a browser as routes. When the download finishes, the app should be named Install macOS 27 Golden Gate and located in the Applications folder. If it opens automatically, quit it rather than beginning installation. In most cases, the Mac used to download the installer must itself be compatible with that macOS version. Enterprise administrators should download from Apple rather than a locally hosted update server.

Apple’s current bootable-installer guide is aimed primarily at system administrators and other experienced users. Follow its download instructions if you need the precise current download path for your Mac.
Prepare an empty USB drive
- Use a USB flash drive or other secondary volume with at least 32 GB capacity; Apple says this is enough for any macOS installer. Its 16 GB guidance applies to most earlier macOS versions, not this macOS 27 installer.
- Copy anything you want to keep off the drive before proceeding. Creating the installer erases the target volume and formats it as Mac OS Extended (Journalled).
- Connect the drive directly to the Mac and rename the mounted volume
MyVolume. The command below refers to that exact volume name.
Create the installer in Terminal
- Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Return:
sudo /Applications/Install macOS 27 Golden Gate.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume - If prompted, enter an administrator password and press Return. Terminal does not display characters while you type the password.
- When asked to confirm erasing the volume, type
Yand press Return. - Wait for Terminal to report that the install media is available. Then quit Terminal and eject the USB volume.
If Terminal says the volume needs more capacity, use a larger drive. Do not proceed with a volume containing files you need: the erase is part of creating the installer.

Start the Mac from the USB installer
Keep the Mac connected to the internet during installation. Apple says installation needs internet access to retrieve firmware and information specific to the Mac model.
Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac and connect the installer directly.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select the installer, choose Continue, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Other Mac models
- Shut down the Mac and connect the installer directly.
- Turn it on while holding Option (Alt), releasing the key when startup volumes appear.
- Select the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
If a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip will not start from external media, check Startup Security Utility and allow external or removable media. After selecting the installer, choose a language if prompted, then choose Install macOS in the Utilities window and continue.

Fix common creation problems
- “Command not found” or the command does not match: Confirm the installer app is in Applications and named
Install macOS 27 Golden Gate. Use the matching command for the installer version you downloaded. - Installer reported as invalid: Apple advises deleting the installer, using Disk Utility to repair the startup disk, and downloading the installer again.
- Terminal cannot erase the volume: Use Disk Utility to erase the target as Mac OS Extended (Journalled), then retry. This also erases its contents.
- Mac does not boot from the drive: Confirm you used the startup method for the Mac’s hardware family. On a T2-equipped Mac, check whether external-media startup is allowed in Startup Security Utility.
- Installation does not complete: The target Mac may be incompatible with macOS 27, or internet access may be unavailable for the firmware and model-specific information the installer needs.
Apple’s older command instructions for Macs running macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or earlier require appending --applicationpath and the appropriate installer path. That legacy exception is separate from the macOS 27 command above.
