What BMC4 is—and which files you actually need
Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 is LunaPixelStudios’ vanilla-plus modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The CurseForge project describes it as “A Proper Vanilla+ Modpack.” Its current listing showed release v62hf, indexed October 9, 2026, with more than 18.6 million downloads at that time. That download figure is a snapshot of the CurseForge/LunaPixelStudios listing, not a guarantee of current totals.

Download two matching items: the client pack for players and the dedicated server pack for the operator. CurseForge’s file index includes dedicated server-pack files, including a v61 server pack in its indexed history. Do not assume that the newest client release has an identical server archive unless the file listing confirms the match.

Requirements before installation
A machine with enough memory
The troubleshooting guidance lists 4 GB as a minimum and recommends allocating 6–8 GB for BMC4. Treat 4 GB as a floor for a small test rather than a comfortable target. Leave at least half of the host’s total RAM for the operating system and other services: do not allocate more than 50 percent of physical memory to Minecraft.
For example, a host with 16 GB of RAM should normally reserve at least 8 GB for the operating system and background services, leaving up to 8 GB for the server. On a smaller computer, close competing applications before starting the world. The correct setting depends on player count, exploration and the host’s other workloads; adding memory cannot compensate for an incorrect Java version or mismatched files.
Java 17 or newer
BMC4 1.20.1 requires Java 17 or newer. Check the Java executable selected by your launcher or start script, not merely the Java version installed somewhere on the machine. If the server reports an unsuitable Java installation, change the launcher or script to point directly to the Java 17 executable, then start again.
Storage and network access
Keep the server in a clean directory with enough free storage for the extracted pack, libraries, logs and a growing world. Self-hosting also requires control of the host firewall and whatever network device or provider sits between the machine and your players. Managed hosting handles much of that systems work, but you still need file access and a way to distribute the exact client release.
Step-by-step: install a BMC4 1.20.1 server
1. Select one exact release
- Choose the BMC4 release you intend to run.
- Record the release identifier so you can give the same value to every player.
- Download the client pack and the dedicated server pack for that release, verifying the file names and Minecraft version in the listing.
Do this before creating a world. Upgrading the pack later can change mods and configuration, so plan a backup and a rollback point for any release change.

2. Prepare a clean server directory
Create a new directory used only for this BMC4 instance. Extract the complete server-pack archive into it rather than copying individual mods from a client installation. A clean directory makes it easier to identify which files belong to the server and to restore a known-good backup.

3. Install and select Java 17
- Install a 64-bit Java runtime that provides Java 17 or newer.
- Open the supplied server start script or launcher configuration.
- Set its Java path to the Java 17 executable if the automatic selection points to Java 8, Java 11 or another incompatible runtime.
The exact script name can vary by BMC4 release and operating system. Use the script included in the server pack instead of inventing a replacement command; the pack’s script carries the arguments expected by that release.
4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Launch the supplied script once. A normal first run creates or updates the server files and prompts you to accept Minecraft’s EULA. Stop the process if required, open the generated EULA file, set the acceptance value as instructed by the file, save it, and launch the supplied script again. Do not delete generated configuration files while troubleshooting unless you have a backup.
5. Wait for the first world start
The first launch can take longer while Forge loads libraries, mods and configuration. Watch the console for a completed server start rather than closing the window as soon as it appears. Keep the console and logs available; they provide the first evidence if a mod, Java runtime or memory setting is wrong.
6. Configure the instance before inviting players
- Choose a world name and gameplay settings appropriate for your group.
- Set the server’s access and network settings using the configuration files supplied with the pack.
- Back up the newly created world before significant exploration or configuration changes.
Exact configuration keys can change between releases, so use the files generated by your selected BMC4 version as the authority rather than copying settings from another Better MC generation.

7. Test from the host first
Join from the same machine or local network if possible. A local test separates a server-startup problem from an internet routing problem. Confirm that the world loads, blocks and entities behave normally, and the console remains free of repeating errors before asking remote players to connect.
8. Give players the matching client pack
Every player should install the same BMC4 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge loader and mod list as the server. Tell them not to add, remove or update individual mods unless you have deliberately changed the server pack for everyone. A client that launches successfully can still be unable to join if one file differs from the server.
RAM allocation and performance tuning
Start with 6–8 GB, not the maximum available
The documented recommendation is 6–8 GB, with 4 GB as the stated minimum. Set the allocation in the launcher or start script used by the server pack, then leave the rest of the host’s RAM available to the operating system and other services. More memory is not automatically faster; excessive allocation can starve the host and make the whole machine less responsive.

Separate world-generation pauses from persistent lag
The troubleshooting guidance notes that short lag drops can occur while structures finish loading. Let a newly explored area settle before concluding that the server has a permanent tick problem. Persistent lag after generation has finished warrants a different investigation: check Java selection, memory pressure, competing applications and whether the host can sustain the active player count.

- Close unrelated applications on a small self-hosted machine.
- Keep the server directory and backups on storage with adequate free space.
- Do not add random performance mods before verifying the pack release, Java runtime and server-pack completeness.
- Record changes to RAM and configuration so you can undo a setting that makes stability worse.
Why friends cannot join: a high-value troubleshooting order
1. Confirm the server is actually running
Check the server console for a completed startup and look for repeating crash or dependency errors. If the process exits, solve that local startup failure before changing router or firewall settings.

2. Compare the exact pack release
Ask the affected player to compare the BMC4 release identifier with the server’s file. Version mismatch is one of the highest-value checks: the client and server must use the same release and mod list. Reinstall the client pack from the matching release rather than manually replacing one or two files.
3. Verify Minecraft and Forge
Both sides must be on Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. A Fabric or NeoForge profile, or a different Minecraft version, is not a compatible substitute for BMC4.
4. Check for incomplete or incorrect server files
If the server reports missing dependencies or the client shows greyed-out or unavailable mods, verify that you used the complete dedicated server pack. A client manifest is intended for the app or launcher; it is not the full manual server installation.
5. Check the network path
For a self-hosted server, verify that the host firewall allows the server process, the router or provider forwards the server’s configured network port to the correct machine, and the player is using the reachable address rather than a local-only address. Test locally first, then test from an external connection. Managed hosts normally provide the address and network layer, but their control panel still needs the instance to be online.
6. Fix Java before performance experiments
If the log names an unsuitable Java installation, switch to Java 17 or newer. Java 8 or 11 can prevent BMC4 from launching, so changing graphics settings or adding optimization mods will not solve that error.

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, ports, upgrades and the machine itself. It also makes you responsible for Java installation, firewall and network configuration, storage, monitoring and hardware capacity. Managed hosting removes much of that systems work, but the provider’s advertised plan is useful only if it supports this exact pack combination.

What the documented hosting examples show
A BerryByte setup guide documents a BMC4 workflow using Forge 1.20.1, release v59 and an 8 GB starting RAM estimate. That is an example configuration, not a universal requirement or performance guarantee.
A GameServerKings guide documents BMC4 with Forge 47.4.20 and Java 17, and describes installing the server pack. It also states that clients and servers must use matching versions. These guides establish setup requirements; they do not establish a guaranteed player count, latency, price or performance level for every host.
Questions to ask before renting
- Can the service install the exact BMC4 release you intend to run, rather than only a generic Forge template?
- Does it provide Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 and a Java 17 runtime?
- Can you upload the matching dedicated server pack and edit its files?
- How much RAM and CPU time are actually reserved, and are there hard limits?
- Are automated backups or snapshots included, and can you restore a specific point?
- Where is the server located, and does that location suit the players’ geography?
- Can you pin an update, keep the old release and roll back if a new pack version causes trouble?
Pricing is provider- and plan-specific; the cited setup guides do not establish a universal cost. Compare the resources and controls above rather than choosing solely by a headline RAM number.
A repeatable maintenance routine
Before every pack update
- Record the current BMC4 release and Forge version.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a world and configuration backup.
- Read the target release’s file listing and obtain its matching server pack.
- Test the update on a copy when possible.
- Give players the matching client release before reopening the server.
When an update fails
Restore the previous server directory and backup rather than mixing old and new mods. Keep the failed installation separate so its logs remain available for diagnosis. Recheck Java 17, the complete server-pack contents and the client/server release identifiers before trying again.

Write down the BMC4 release, Java path, RAM allocation, host location, backup dates and any custom configuration. This record turns a future connection or crash problem into a comparison task instead of guesswork.
The reliable BMC4 build in one checklist
- BMC4 [FORGE] for Minecraft 1.20.1, not another Better MC generation.
- One exact release selected for both server and clients.
- Dedicated server-pack archive extracted into a clean directory.
- Java 17 or newer selected by the actual launch script.
- About 6–8 GB allocated initially, with no more than half of host RAM assigned to Minecraft.
- EULA accepted and the supplied start script used.
- Local startup tested before remote access is attempted.
- Firewall, routing and reachable address checked for self-hosting.
- Backups made before exploration and before every release change.
If those conditions are met, most BMC4 failures become diagnosable: Java errors point to the runtime, missing dependencies point to an incomplete server pack, join failures point first to release parity and networking, and short generation pauses can be distinguished from sustained performance problems.
