A believable regional accent begins with a character’s speech history and a specific community—not a handful of conspicuous sounds. Define where the character grew up, study several real speakers from the target variety, choose a small set of consistent features, and test them in emotional, connected dialogue. For a game cast, coordinate those choices across the setting and reconsider them for each language version.
Start with the character, not the pronunciation
Before choosing vowels or deciding how a line should sound, sketch the character’s speech history. Where did they grow up? Who did they speak with at home and in their community? What are their social circumstances and education? Have migration, work, military service, class mobility, or time away changed their speech?

These are questions for building an individual character, not a formula that says a particular identity must produce a particular accent. They help make the voice feel lived-in rather than applied like a costume. “British,” “Southern,” or “European” is usually too broad to guide a consistent performance. Narrow the model to a region and, where relevant, a social variety that fits the character. Listen to multiple speakers when possible: one speaker can be a useful anchor, but cannot represent everyone in a region.

For an invented world, decide which real-world varieties inspire its regions and how those choices relate to each other. Make clear within the production that an inspiration is a voice-design reference, not a complete representation of the fictional culture. In an interview, the Final Fantasy XVI localization team described using different UK regional accents for fictional nations, aiming to make origin audible. The team also warned that combining accents listeners recognize as belonging to different places can sound geographically incoherent.
Side describes a comparable mapping in its account of work on The Witcher: Redania was associated with Northern English, Skellige with Northern Irish, and Novigrad with posh English varieties; London accents were used for working-class characters. Those are that production’s choices, not a general rule that any accent reliably communicates class. The same Side production account describes historical-language work on Age of Empires IV, which involved finding expert speakers and scholars for languages without available recordings. That kind of historical performance may require specialist research beyond ordinary regional-accent practice.

Listen for patterns, not a collection of tricks
Use conversational recordings as well as formal speech. Interviews, storytelling, arguments, laughter, and casual conversation can reveal how a variety works when speakers are not carefully presenting themselves. Lang’s advice is direct: “Yes, you need to listen to native speakers. Extensively.” His accent-learning guide also emphasizes rhythm, pitch, connected speech, reductions, and natural pauses. Copying only the most dramatic, recognizable traits can tip a performance into caricature.

As you listen, note features that recur rather than treating each unusual sound as a rule. Useful areas to observe include:

- Vowels and consonants: Which sounds stand out, and in what positions or words?
- Pitch and intonation: How does the voice move through a statement, question, or reaction?
- Rhythm and stress: Which syllables receive emphasis? Does the speech feel clipped, measured, or flowing?
- Connected speech: How do words link, reduce, or change at phrase boundaries?
- Pauses and phrasing: Where does a speaker naturally stop, restart, or group words?
- Vocabulary and habitual wording: Are there recurring expressions that fit the character’s community and situation?
Build a manageable, consistent performance
Choose a small, practical set of features that distinguishes the target model, then apply them consistently where they belong. There is no universal feature count: the right set depends on the variety, the actor, and the demands of the role. Let acting choices—emotion, status, intimacy, fatigue, and audience—shape delivery without turning every shift in mood into a new accent.
For a written pronunciation guide, explain the features in usable terms and provide reference examples. Avoid spelling every word phonetically in dialogue. That can make text hard to read and can suggest that natural variation is a string of errors. The goal is a coherent performance, not a page of eye-catching respellings.

Rehearse in the conditions the game requires
Practice complete lines and exchanges instead of relying only on isolated word lists. Include different emotional states, interruptions, exertion, quiet speech, and any short repeated barks the game uses. A performance that works in a careful demonstration may not hold together in a fast argument or a breathless combat line.

Game recording can require short lines to be recreated across separate takes. Give the performer a concise reference sheet, pronunciation notes, and examples they can return to. A coach or voice director can help turn listening notes into focused direction: voice director and dialect coach Keith Higinbotham describes gathering and analyzing accent samples, then making the material digestible for a particular actor. Get an informed listener to check the result
Ask a dialect coach or knowledgeable speaker to assess whether the target is identifiable, consistent, and free of distracting mixtures. Performers may not reliably hear their own accent, and Lang recommends outside feedback in coached work. If cultural representation or historical accuracy matters, involve people with relevant lived or scholarly expertise early enough for their feedback to influence the design. These checks are especially useful when the production has limited reference material or when an invented setting draws on real communities.
Review what the accent may imply as well as whether it sounds plausible. Accent is not neutral decoration: a study by Emily Villanueva and Astrid Ensslin analyzes how performed accents in Dragon Age: Inquisition help construct social and ideological meaning and can affect player perception. Treat that as a reason to examine the associations your choices may evoke, not as proof that any variety carries one fixed meaning. See the 2021 academic chapter on accent in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Coordinate the cast and plan for localization
For a game with multiple regions, create a short accent map that the whole team can use. Record the region, chosen speech model, character examples, allowed variation, and who reviews it. Check whether the story implies proximity, migration, shared history, or isolation, then make sure the voice patterns support those relationships rather than contradicting them.

The Final Fantasy XVI interview reports that its French localization team chose not to add regional accents in that version, describing the choice as delicate and not common in French voice acting. The team used linguistic inspirations in names instead. The Spanish localization director described conveying some characterization through speech and word choice where European Spanish voice-over was unavailable. A localized version may therefore need different devices to preserve characterization rather than imitate the original accent pattern.
When to bring in a coach
A dialect coach can help research a target, diagnose what is or is not working, and maintain consistency across lines and sessions. A coach may be particularly useful when the performer is new to the variety, when several actors need to share one regional model, or when the target draws on a community or historical language that requires specialist knowledge. Higinbotham’s language-creation services page describes custom fictional dialect and pronunciation materials for games; coaching is an option, not a prerequisite for every production.
