How to Make a Baking Soda and Vinegar Rocket Safely at Home

Make a small film-canister rocket with baking soda and vinegar, following a safe outdoor setup and a consistent set of instructions.

You can make a small film-canister rocket outdoors with baking soda, vinegar and water. The reaction produces carbon dioxide; pressure builds until the snap-on lid releases, sending the canister upward. Use a small plastic film canister with a tight-fitting lid, wear safety goggles, keep people and breakables out of its path, and move away as soon as you set it down.

What you need

  • A small plastic film canister with a tight-fitting lid. The Lunar and Planetary Institute specifies a 35 mm canister with a cap that fits inside the rim.
  • Baking soda, vinegar and water.
  • Measuring spoons, a spoon, and wax paper or a small bowl.
  • Safety goggles.
  • Optional: cardstock or construction paper, tape, scissors and decorations for a rocket body. Keep decorations clear of the lid seam so the lid can close and release.

Use the small canister and lid style specified by the activity. The demonstration relies on the snap lid releasing under pressure; do not replace it with a rigid pressure vessel.

Make the rocket using one complete method

The steps below follow the Science Buddies activity. Its measurements are a starting setup for that method, not a universal ingredient ratio: canister sizes and seals vary.

  1. Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda on wax paper or in a small bowl. Mix in 1/8 teaspoon of water to dampen it.
  2. Turn the lid upside down and pack the damp baking soda into its depression. Leave the snapping rim clear so the lid can seal.
  3. Add vinegar to the canister a teaspoon at a time. Stop before the vinegar can touch the baking soda once the lid is attached. Science Buddies says this may be about 5 teaspoons, depending on the canister.
  4. Move to an open outdoor area and put on safety goggles. Place the canister on a flat, hard surface. Snap on the lid, turn the canister lid-down, set it down, and move away immediately. Do not point it toward people or breakables.
  5. Wait for the reaction, then rinse and dry the canister and lid.

Science Buddies calls for an open area at least six feet from buildings in its procedure; its materials list says at least two meters. Choose a clear area with ample space, and keep people away from the launch path.

Follow the safety distances and setup

The Lunar and Planetary Institute describes a different procedure: it combines 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda quickly in the canister, snaps it shut, stands the rocket upright, and steps back. That activity tells bystanders to stay at least 10 feet from the launch area and the launcher to wear eye protection. These quantities and orientations differ from the Science Buddies method, so do not mix steps from the two procedures.

  • Launch outdoors on a flat, hard surface in an open area.
  • Wear safety goggles and make sure bystanders are well away from the launch area.
  • Never aim the canister at people, animals or breakables. Set it down and move away promptly.
  • Use a small film canister with the specified snap-on lid; do not use a container that cannot release its lid as described.

Why the canister lifts off

Baking soda and vinegar react to produce water and carbon dioxide. The Lunar and Planetary Institute explains that carbonic acid forms first and then breaks down into water and carbon dioxide. In the closed canister, carbon dioxide accumulates and pressure rises until the lid pops open. Gas escaping through the open end pushes the canister in the opposite direction, producing thrust.

That is a simple demonstration of thrust, not a miniature version of the fuels or hardware used in orbital launch vehicles. Teisha Rowland, PhD, the credited author of the Science Buddies activity, explains: “In the capped film canister, the carbon dioxide gas builds up until the pressure of all of the contained gas causes the canister to pop open.”

What to expect, and how to experiment

Launch behavior varies with the canister and how well its lid seals, so a result from one setup is not a guarantee for another. Science Buddies reports heights of roughly 6 feet for a canister nearly full of vinegar and nearly 15 feet for its least-vinegar trial. Those are observations from that activity’s trials, not independently verified results or promised heights for a home launch.

To investigate what affects a launch, change one factor at a time, keep the rest of the setup as consistent as possible, record the results and repeat trials when practical. The Science Buddies activity suggests varying vinegar while holding baking soda at 1 teaspoon, then trying different baking-soda amounts. The Lunar and Planetary Institute suggests comparing mass, fuel mixture and rocket shape.

  • Ingredient amounts: Compare vinegar or baking-soda quantities and record launch height and delay. Do not assume a particular mixture will fly highest in every canister.
  • Added mass: Compare otherwise similar rockets with different added mass. The institute’s activity expects height to decrease as mass increases when thrust is similar.
  • Shape: Try a paper cone or fins and observe how flight behavior changes. Keep additions clear of the lid seam.

Rinse and dry the canister and lid after each launch. Differences in fit, seal, orientation and quantities can affect the outcome, so measure what happens in your own setup rather than treating one trial as a dependable target.
