1. Decide what the website must do before you install anything
A bakery website can be a digital menu and contact card, or it can accept paid orders with pickup and delivery rules. Defining that boundary first prevents you from installing commerce tools that staff will not use—or from launching a beautiful site that cannot handle a Saturday cake rush.

| Website type | What customers can do | Setup and ongoing work | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informational menu | Read the menu, prices, allergens and hours; call, email or visit to order | Lower setup effort; staff update pages or posts manually; no online payment workflow | New bakeries, pre-order businesses and shops whose orders are highly customized |
| Inquiry-based ordering | Submit a contact or custom-cake request with a preferred date and specifications | Requires a form, notification routing and a response process; payment may happen later | Celebration cakes and bespoke orders that need a conversation before a quote |
| WooCommerce checkout | Choose products, add-ons and quantities, select an available fulfillment option and pay online | More configuration, product maintenance, tax and payment settings, order notifications and order fulfillment | Standardized cakes, pastries, bread boxes and repeatable pickup or delivery orders |
| Menu plus QR ordering | Open a mobile menu from a QR code and place an order from a table or counter | Needs a commerce setup and a reliable process for operating hours, fulfillment and staff alerts | Cafes, bakery counters and venues taking orders on site |
You can start with an informational site and add WooCommerce later. Use the same product names, photos and allergen information from the beginning so a future catalog does not require a complete rewrite.
Write down operating rules
Before choosing a theme or plugin, record the answers customers and staff will need:
#1 Best Overall
- Which products are available every day, and which are seasonal or preorder-only?
- How many days’ notice does each custom cake require?
- What pickup windows and delivery zones are available?
- Are there minimum order values, delivery fees, deposits or cancellation cutoffs?
- Which ingredients are common allergens, and how will shared-equipment warnings be presented?
- Who receives new-order notifications, and who can change an order when a product sells out?
These rules become fields, product descriptions, checkout choices and confirmation messages later.
2. Buy hosting and a domain, then install WordPress
Choose a WordPress hosting plan
Select a host that supports current WordPress requirements, encrypted HTTPS, automatic backups, a database, PHP updates and a way to restore the site. A bakery site with large photographs needs enough storage and a content-delivery or caching option that keeps mobile pages responsive. Confirm whether email delivery, staging, malware monitoring and support are included; these are operating features, not just technical extras.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Register a short domain that customers can hear and type correctly. A name based on the bakery’s established trading name is usually easier to remember than a slogan. Check ownership, renewal terms and access to the domain account separately from the hosting account so the business is not locked out if a developer changes.
Install WordPress and secure the basics
- Point the domain’s DNS records to the host as instructed by the host, then wait for the domain to resolve.
- Use the host’s WordPress installer, or upload WordPress and create the database if the host does not provide an installer.
- Set the site title, administrator email, time zone and preferred date format in Settings > General.
- Enable HTTPS and confirm that both the home page and the WordPress login use the secure address.
- In Settings > Permalinks, choose a readable structure such as the post name option before publishing pages.
- Delete sample content, change the administrator username if it is predictable, use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication where the host or security setup supports it.
- Schedule backups and test that a backup can actually be restored. Keep at least one copy outside the hosting account.
Do not make the site public until the home page, contact details and legal or policy pages are ready. A coming-soon or maintenance setting is preferable to exposing unfinished sample content.
3. Pick a theme that supports food, photos and orders
A theme controls presentation; it should not be the place where essential product data or order logic lives. Choose a theme that remains usable if you later change themes or add WooCommerce.
Check these capabilities before activation
- Responsive layouts: menus, buttons, galleries and checkout must work at narrow phone widths without horizontal scrolling.
- Menu and product presentation: the theme should accommodate prices, descriptions, dietary notes, sale or seasonal labels and multiple images.
- WooCommerce compatibility: verify that shop, cart, checkout and account templates are supported if online payment is planned.
- Forms and reservations: a custom-cake inquiry form or reservation flow should fit the visual system and send usable notifications.
- Customization: colors, type, logo, header action and spacing should be adjustable in the Site Editor or Customizer without editing theme files.
- Performance: avoid themes that load several sliders, animation libraries and large demo assets when a simple product grid will do.
- Accessibility: keyboard focus, contrast, heading structure and readable controls should remain intact after branding changes.
Bakery-specific and general-purpose choices
A bakery-specific theme can provide ready-made layouts for cakes, pastries, cookies, artisan bread and desserts, reducing design work. The Bakeri block theme is documented for those bakery categories and is intended to work with WooCommerce. The Online Bakery Shop listing describes menu displays, order forms, custom-cake bookings, online reservations, responsive layouts, WooCommerce compatibility, Contact Form 7 compatibility and Food Store compatibility.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A general-purpose block or business theme may be a better long-term choice when the bakery also needs a blog, catering pages, classes or multiple locations. In either case, import only the patterns you need. Replace demo products, stock photography, colors and text before inviting customers to the site.
Set the visual system once
Use one primary brand color, one accent color and a neutral background that keeps food photographs prominent. Set body text to a comfortable size and line height. Make the main action—Order Now, View Menu or Request a Custom Cake—a consistent button in the header and on relevant pages. Check the color combination with a contrast tool and inspect it in bright and dim phone conditions.
4. Build the essential pages
Create the page structure before filling every product. Each page should answer a distinct customer question and have one obvious next action.
Home
Lead with what the bakery sells, where it serves customers and how to order. Show a small selection of signature products rather than every item. Include today’s or this week’s availability only if someone will maintain it. Add the primary call to action, opening hours, service area and a clear path to the complete menu.
Menu or Shop
An informational menu can use categories such as bread, pastries, cakes, cookies and seasonal items. A WooCommerce shop should use product categories that match how customers browse, not how ingredients are stored. Every entry needs a precise name, price or “request a quote” status, serving size, description, availability and ordering lead time.
About
Explain the bakery’s style, production approach and what makes its products distinctive. Keep the copy useful: mention sourdough schedules, custom decoration, vegan ranges or wholesale service only when those offerings are real and current. A short team or kitchen photograph can build confidence, but it should have meaningful alternative text.
Contact and Location
Show the full address, phone number, email, opening hours, holiday exceptions, parking or collection instructions and service area. If there are multiple locations, give each its own hours and contact details. Make the phone number tappable on mobile and place directions near the address.
Ordering or Custom Cakes
Use a dedicated page when orders need details that a standard product page cannot collect. Explain lead times, portion guidance, flavor and filling choices, design references, dietary limitations, deposit rules and how quickly the bakery replies. A form should ask only for information needed to quote or schedule the order.
Rank #3
Policies
Publish cancellation, refund, collection, delivery, privacy and allergen information appropriate to the bakery’s jurisdiction and business model. Confirm local tax, food-labeling and payment requirements before launch; legal obligations vary by location and can change.
5. Keep navigation short and purposeful
WordPress menus normally appear in a header or sidebar. Keep the top-level list short so a visitor can scan it on a phone. Use a submenu only when grouping genuinely related pages.
- Open Appearance > Editor > Navigation on a block theme, or Appearance > Menus on a classic theme.
- Add the pages customers use most: Home, Menu or Shop, About, Contact and Ordering or Custom Cakes.
- Place the primary action—such as Order Now—near the beginning or as a visually distinct button.
- Group secondary pages such as policies, wholesale and classes under an appropriate submenu rather than adding every page to the main row.
- Save, then test the menu with a keyboard and on a narrow phone viewport. Make sure the mobile menu opens, closes and can be reached without precise tapping.
Do not hide essential information behind a graphic-only menu. A text link with a descriptive label is easier to use, search and maintain.
6. Add products and menu items that prevent surprises
Use a consistent product record
For each item, maintain the same fields whether it appears on a page, in a PDF or in WooCommerce:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Customer-facing name and category
- Short description followed by ingredients or flavor notes
- Price, currency and whether the price is per item, box or size
- Serving count, dimensions or weight where relevant
- Allergens and cross-contact statement approved for the bakery’s operation
- Availability, preorder cutoff and lead time
- Pickup dates, windows and delivery eligibility
- Options such as size, flavor, message, candles or dietary variation
- Photograph with accurate alternative text
Never let a photograph imply a decoration, filling or portion that is not included. If a product changes by season, date the availability and remove expired versions instead of leaving customers to discover the change at checkout.
Photograph food for fast mobile decisions
Use consistent lighting and backgrounds, crop images to the same ratio within a category and export appropriately sized files. Keep the original high-resolution files off the page so the browser does not download more data than necessary. Show scale for cakes and gift boxes when size is not obvious. An image’s alternative text should identify the item and its meaningful visual detail, not repeat “image of.”
7. Add WooCommerce when customers need online checkout
WordPress supplies the site, editor, navigation and publishing foundation. WooCommerce supplies the commerce layer: products, cart, checkout, payment and order records. Install it only when the bakery is prepared to maintain stock, availability, fulfillment and notifications.
Rank #4
Configure the store foundation
- Install and activate WooCommerce from Plugins > Add New, then complete its setup wizard.
- Set the store address, selling and shipping regions, currency and tax display in WooCommerce > Settings. Obtain local tax advice where required.
- Choose payment methods that the bakery can reconcile and support. Complete the provider’s verification and run a controlled transaction before launch.
- Create products with simple, variable or grouped structures according to the real choices customers make. Avoid dozens of variations when a custom-cake form is more suitable.
- Configure shipping or local pickup methods, delivery zones, fees, cutoff times and blackout dates. Show these rules before payment, not only in a confirmation email.
- Set order emails to addresses that staff monitor during opening hours. Include the product, options, fulfillment date, customer contact details and payment status in notifications.
Restaurant-style ordering features
WooCommerce documentation for restaurant ordering describes food-menu presentation, delivery options, a mini-cart, product add-ons, operating-hour status and QR-code table ordering. These capabilities can support a bakery, but they do not replace the bakery’s own decisions about lead times, capacity, delivery radius or allergen communication.
Use add-ons for bounded choices—such as a greeting message or candle pack—with explicit prices. Use a custom inquiry for design work that requires approval. If the bakery accepts orders only during certain hours, display the closed or unavailable state and explain the next available window rather than allowing a payment the team cannot fulfill.
Pickup-only versus delivery
| Model | Required configuration | Operational risk to control |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup only | Location, opening hours, date and time window, collection instructions | Orders arriving outside production capacity or customers missing the collection window |
| Pickup plus local delivery | Delivery zones, fees, minimums, address validation, dates and time windows | Addresses outside the service area, traffic delays, fragile products and unclear handoff responsibility |
| Scheduled event or celebration orders | Longer lead times, design approval, deposit or quote process and a final confirmation step | Last-minute changes, incorrect serving sizes and a date being accepted before the design is approved |
8. Build a custom-cake request workflow
Custom cakes are rarely a good fit for an instant “add to cart” product with unlimited free text. A structured inquiry gives the bakery enough information to quote while preserving a human approval step.
- Ask for the customer’s name, email and phone number.
- Collect event date, preferred pickup or delivery, guest count and serving size.
- Offer controlled fields for flavor, filling, shape and dietary requirements, plus a free-text design brief.
- Allow reference-image uploads only if the form and storage process are secured and staff know how long files are retained.
- State the minimum lead time, that availability is not confirmed until the bakery replies, and when a deposit becomes due.
- Send a confirmation to the customer and a detailed notification to the responsible staff member.
- Record the approved design, price, deposit, due date and final collection instructions in the bakery’s normal order system.
Use a prominent link to this page from the home page, menu and cake product descriptions. Do not force customers to search the footer for a high-value ordering path.
9. Make the site accessible to more customers
Accessibility is part of a reliable bakery experience: customers may be using a phone in bright light, a screen reader, keyboard navigation or a slow connection. It also improves how search engines interpret the page.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write specific alternative text for informative food and location images. Use empty alternative text only for genuinely decorative images.
- Use one descriptive H1 per page, then logical H2 and H3 headings. Do not choose a heading level only because its font looks attractive.
- Link with meaningful labels such as “View the pastry menu” rather than “Click here.”
- Keep text and interactive controls readable, with adequate contrast and visible keyboard focus.
- Do not communicate availability, allergens or price by color alone; include words or symbols with an explanation.
- Add captions or transcripts for video and audio content.
- Ensure forms have visible labels, useful error messages and a way to recover without losing all entered information.
After changing a theme’s colors or typography, recheck focus states, button contrast and the checkout error path. A theme’s default accessibility does not guarantee an accessible customized site.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Set up WordPress SEO without writing for robots
Search visibility starts with a public, understandable site. In Settings > Reading, confirm that search-engine visibility is not disabled when the site is ready. Give every important page a descriptive title, a readable slug and a short description that matches the page’s actual content.
Best Value
Use a clear information structure
- Use a single canonical page for the main menu instead of duplicating the same menu in several posts.
- Link the home page to the menu, ordering page, location and contact page; link products back to relevant categories and ordering guidance.
- Use location wording naturally where the bakery genuinely serves that area. Do not create thin pages for places the bakery does not serve.
- Write metadata that explains the page’s value and reflects the visible text.
- Give image files and alt text useful names and descriptions before uploading them.
- Keep seasonal pages current. Redirect or clearly archive expired promotions rather than allowing dead links from menus and social posts.
An SEO plugin can help edit metadata and generate technical fields, but it cannot correct confusing navigation, inaccurate hours or missing product information. Measure success with calls, direction requests and completed orders as well as search impressions.
11. Test the complete customer and staff workflow
Test every important path before launch and after major plugin, theme or payment changes. Use a phone and a desktop, a keyboard-only pass and at least one slower connection.
- Open the home page in a private browser window. Confirm the domain, HTTPS, logo, headline, hours and primary call to action.
- Navigate to the menu without using the browser back button. Check categories, prices, portions, allergens, images and seasonal availability.
- Submit a custom-cake inquiry with realistic information. Verify the customer confirmation, staff notification, reply address and spam handling.
- For WooCommerce, place a test order with each fulfillment method, product option and relevant add-on. Check taxes, fees, totals, stock or capacity rules and confirmation emails.
- Confirm that a canceled or failed payment does not create an order staff cannot identify. Check the process for refunds or manual status changes.
- Try an unavailable date, a delivery address outside the service area and an order outside operating hours. The site should explain the problem and the next valid action.
- Check the mobile menu, buttons, form fields and checkout at narrow widths. Look for clipped text, tiny controls, unexpected scrolling and keyboard traps.
- Verify phone numbers, email addresses, map links, opening hours and holiday notices against the bakery’s current records.
- Confirm that backups exist, updates are scheduled and at least two staff members can access orders and recover the site.
Keep a short launch checklist with the date it was completed and the person responsible. Repeat the order test whenever payment, checkout, delivery or notification settings change.
12. Maintain the bakery website after launch
Daily or per-shift checks
- Review new orders, payment status, pickup dates and delivery notes.
- Mark sold-out products unavailable and update the next available fulfillment window.
- Check that order notifications are reaching the monitored inbox or dashboard.
Weekly checks
- Review menu prices, seasonal items, lead times and allergen statements.
- Inspect forms, phone links, directions and opening hours on a phone.
- Compress newly added images and remove unused media that slows the site.
Monthly or after updates
- Apply WordPress, theme and plugin updates from a recent backup, then repeat the checkout and inquiry tests.
- Review failed payments, abandoned carts, missed notifications and customer questions for confusing instructions.
- Check search indexing, broken links, page titles and the performance of the busiest pages.
- Confirm staff access, password security and the ability to restore a backup.
Keep a staging copy for significant theme or checkout changes when the host supports it. Never test a new payment configuration by placing an unannounced live order.
Common problems and practical fixes
The site looks good on desktop but not on phones
Inspect the header, product grids, galleries and checkout at a narrow width. Replace fixed-width sections, shorten navigation labels, resize images and remove decorative sliders that push the order button below several screens.
Customers cannot tell what is included in a product
Put size, serving count, included decorations, allergens and lead time beside the price. Move important conditions out of a tooltip or image and into readable text.
Staff receive an order but not the details
Check the notification recipient, spam filtering, email authentication and the order template. Keep the order visible in the WordPress dashboard as the source of truth and create a second monitored notification route for busy periods.
Customers select dates the bakery cannot fulfill
Replace unrestricted date fields with configured availability, blackout dates or an inquiry step. Display the earliest possible date before customers complete payment.
The menu is difficult to update
Use reusable blocks or WooCommerce categories, document where prices and hours are maintained, and assign one owner. Avoid copying the same menu into several pages where one forgotten edit can create conflicting prices.
Images make pages slow
Resize images to the largest display size, use modern compression supported by the host, defer below-the-fold galleries and remove duplicate originals from the media library after confirming they are not referenced.
