To get more runtime without losing useful features, check what is using power first, then make targeted changes to display settings and apps while keeping location, connectivity and alerts available where you need them.
Why 7,000mAh does not predict your phone’s runtime
Battery capacity is only one part of the picture. Two phones with the same stated capacity can last different amounts of time because their hardware, software, display use, apps, battery age and network conditions differ. Google notes that battery life depends on the device; Apple likewise points to usage and software and hardware features as factors. Without a specific phone and a defined use pattern, there is no reliable screen-on-time or days-per-charge figure to promise.

As Google Android Help puts it, “You can take several actions to extend your device’s battery life and make a charge last longer.” The useful first step is to identify which activity is actually consuming power.

On iPhone
Open Settings > Battery and review battery use by app and system activity. Apple identifies background activity, notifications and poor or absent cellular coverage as possible contributors. Battery life may also be temporarily affected by work that continues after a software update, so check again after that activity has settled before making lasting changes.

On Android
Open the phone’s battery settings and look for apps with unusually high use. Menu names and available controls differ among manufacturers and Android versions, so use the maker’s support instructions if the path on your phone is different. Google says some Android battery steps depend on the device, and some require Android 13 or later.
Start with the largest identifiable drain rather than switching off several features at once. If one app is responsible, adjust that app; if display use dominates, begin with the screen. This keeps changes focused and makes it easier to notice whether they help.

Make screen and app adjustments first
Reduce screen power without making the phone hard to use
- Shorten screen timeout: A shorter interval stops the display staying on after you put the phone down.
- Use sensible brightness: Lower brightness when comfortable, or use automatic/adaptive brightness if available and suitable for your use.
- Try dark theme where supported: Google lists dark theme as an option on some devices; its effect depends on the phone and display.
Target apps that use power in the background
Consider restricting background use for an app that appears high in the battery list and does not need to update constantly. Before doing so, ask whether the app needs to deliver timely alerts or refresh in the background: optimization can delay notifications or other background work. Keep less restrictive settings for apps whose alerts matter to you.

Google lists Adaptive Battery and app battery-use restrictions among Android options, but availability depends on the device and software. On Pixel phones, some optimization steps require Android 14 or later.

Keep useful features on and address the specific cause
Location, Bluetooth, mobile data and notifications do not need to be disabled across the board. Instead, check which app or condition is driving avoidable use and change only that where practical.
- Location: Review which apps can access location in the background and limit access for apps that do not need it. Turning off Location access entirely can stop some apps and features from working, so treat that as a situational choice, not a default fix.
- Connectivity: Turn off a hotspot when nobody needs it, and use Wi-Fi when convenient. Apple says Wi-Fi and stronger cellular signal can reduce network-related power use. On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can use LTE when 5G speeds do not provide a noticeable benefit.
- High-demand activities: If you need extra runtime right now, prolonged navigation or GPS use and streaming are more direct targets than disabling a feature you rely on all day.
- Notifications: Keep alerts enabled for important apps. If a particular app is using substantial power, weigh the benefit of restricting its background activity against the possibility of delayed alerts.
Use adaptive and power-saving modes with their trade-offs in mind

These modes are choices, not prerequisites for better everyday battery life. If keeping normal notifications and background behavior is important, begin with usage diagnosis, screen settings and targeted app changes instead.

Separate today’s drain from battery wear and heat
Keep the phone cool
Heat can increase battery drain and damage the battery, according to Google. If the phone is hot, reduce the demanding activity or environment causing the heat and let it cool; changing charge limits will not resolve an active app or signal-related drain.
Check battery condition if runtime has declined over time
Lithium-ion batteries chemically age and lose capacity. If the phone’s battery health screen reports a service condition, follow the manufacturer’s service path rather than trying to compensate indefinitely with settings. Optimized charging and charge limits are intended to reduce long-term wear; they do not diagnose or fix an app that is draining power today.

Choose changes by the problem you see
