How to Make a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist Switch Smoothly

Switch prerecorded videos during one continuous YouTube Live broadcast by keeping the encoder active. Prepare OBS sources, rehearse audio and video boundaries, and verify 4K60 settings before going live.

To play prerecorded videos in sequence without ending a YouTube Live broadcast, keep one encoder session running and switch its media source or scene at each video boundary. In OBS, prepare the files as media sources or scenes and choose a short transition if you want to soften the visible cut. That can make the picture change look smoother, but it does not guarantee gapless video or audio: test the exact files, transitions, and stream in an unlisted or private rehearsal.

How the playlist stays live while videos change

YouTube Live receives an output from an encoder using a server URL and stream key. Once the encoder is streaming, changing the media it sends—rather than stopping and restarting the encoder at every boundary—lets the broadcast remain active. This is a practical encoder workflow, not a promise that every viewer will see a perfectly uninterrupted handoff. YouTube’s setup guide explains how to enter the server URL and stream key, start the encoder, check the preview, and go live: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

YouTube does not document a particular OBS playlist-switch recipe or guarantee gapless file transitions. Treat smooth switching as something to build and verify in your production setup.

Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
  2. Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings into your encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password, so do not expose it in screenshots, recordings, or messages. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Keep the encoder output active. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview before going live. During the playlist, switch the source or scene being sent rather than ending the live event for each file.

Set up the videos and transitions in OBS

  1. Inspect every file first. Check its duration, resolution, frame rate, audio track, and playback from beginning to end. Confirm that the file opens and plays correctly in the encoder before relying on it live.
  2. Prepare a source or scene for each item. Add each prerecorded video as a media source or place it in a scene. Make the sources or scenes easy to identify and order them according to the intended broadcast sequence. This is a practical setup recommendation, not a YouTube-validated automated-playlist procedure.
  3. Match the output canvas and settings. Use a consistent output format across items where possible. Differences in frame rate, dimensions, or audio behavior can make a boundary more noticeable even when the encoder stays connected.
  4. Choose the transition for the picture. A brief fade can hide a hard visual cut. It cannot fix a delayed source start, a silent interval, a mismatched frame rate, or an audio discontinuity. If uninterrupted audio matters, test the sound at every handoff separately.
  5. Prepare a fallback. Keep a slate or fallback scene available, and confirm the next file can start before the current one ends. YouTube’s live-stream checklist also recommends testing encoder failover and checking local archive integrity: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Configure the stream for 4K at 60 fps

Set the encoder to 2160p (4K) at 60 fps only if the encoding system and upload connection can sustain the output. For H.264 at 2160p60, YouTube lists a recommended bitrate of 35 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265 at that mode, YouTube lists a bitrate range of 10–40 Mbps. These are YouTube’s platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection will deliver a stable stream. Check stream health during rehearsal and the event. The current settings table is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K. If you use HLS ingestion, account for its higher latency: HLS sends video segments rather than a continuous feed like RTMP. YouTube’s HLS guidance also requires a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. Choose a protocol supported by your encoder and appropriate to your latency and codec requirements; do not assume protocol choice will make file boundaries gapless. See Set up an HLS stream.

HDR is optional

HDR is separate from 4K60 and is not required for playlist transitions. YouTube’s HDR guidance says HDR streaming currently uses H.265/HEVC and documents an OBS HDR workflow from version 30.1 with an HDR source and specified encoder and color settings. Use that workflow only if you are producing HDR; do not apply it just to stream 4K60. Details: Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Rehearse for actual continuity

Run the complete sequence as a private or unlisted rehearsal and inspect the YouTube preview, not just the local OBS canvas. Watch and listen through each boundary. A fade can make the image transition look softer while audio still clicks, drops, overlaps, or goes silent; source initialization and file timing also matter. Do not promise viewers gapless playback until you have verified the exact sequence and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube recommends configuring at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. Its checklist calls for checking the preview, testing failover, and monitoring audio and video continuously. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Rights and the end of the broadcast

Confirm that you have the rights needed to livestream every video and audio item. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance warns creators to ensure trailers do not infringe rights; the same concern applies to prerecorded playlist content. When the broadcast is finished, end it in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder as appropriate for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending; consult Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot black screens and audio gaps

  • Black screen at a boundary: Check that the next media source is available, starts correctly, and is selected or activated as intended. Test the handoff in the full sequence, and use a fallback scene if a file fails to start.
  • Audio gap, click, or overlap: Inspect the outgoing and incoming audio tracks and test the boundary by listening. A video fade does not repair audio timing; adjust the source timing or transition and rehearse again.
  • The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Verify the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, then assess whether the encoder and upload connection can sustain them. YouTube’s recommended 35 Mbps H.264 rate for 2160p60 is not proof that your upload connection has enough headroom.
  • Viewers report more delay than expected: Check whether the encoder uses HLS. YouTube documents higher latency for HLS than RTMP because HLS sends segments. At 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option.
  • The stream disconnects: Test encoder failover before the event and monitor the YouTube preview. Keep a fallback scene ready so the broadcast has a planned response while you recover the media or encoder.
