On a Linux server, run your FFmpeg playlist encoder as a boot-enabled systemd service with a restart policy, and configure the playlist to loop. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the stream key, ingest URL and auto-start setting. Then test a real reboot on an unlisted stream. This can restart the encoder and begin the playlist again; it does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same broadcast or that playback will pick up at the last item.
Know what “restart” means
There are two separate recovery goals. First, restart the encoder and have it play the playlist again. A boot-enabled service and a looping FFmpeg input address this. Second, continue the same YouTube broadcast and watch page after the reboot. YouTube’s documented encoder and auto-start settings do not guarantee that outcome, so test the exact stream configuration you intend to use.

- Encoder recovery: the server starts FFmpeg after boot; FFmpeg reconnects to YouTube and reads the playlist.
- Broadcast recovery: YouTube accepts the new feed as part of the intended live event rather than ending, replacing or otherwise changing the broadcast. Do not assume this from a successful FFmpeg restart alone.
- Playlist position: a newly launched process may begin at the playlist’s first item. Continuing from the last item requires separate position-persistence behavior, which must be implemented and tested for your setup.
Prepare the YouTube stream and playlist
Confirm the YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a public repository, a publicly readable service file, or logs.
Check the stream’s auto-start setting if you expect the encoder feed to start the broadcast without a manual click. YouTube’s settings documentation says auto-start and auto-stop let the creator start or stop streaming from the encoder; it does not say a reboot always rejoins the same event. Confirm the setting in Live Control Room rather than assuming it is enabled.

Make the playlist readable and loopable
Keep the playlist and its media files at stable paths that the service account can read. Configure FFmpeg’s input for the playlist format you actually use, including the appropriate loop behavior. A community Linux example uses FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and a looping playlist, but it is an implementation example—not a universal configuration for every media format, FFmpeg build or distribution.
First run the exact encoder command manually as the intended service account. Confirm that FFmpeg can read every playlist entry and send a healthy feed to an unlisted test stream. Only then put that known-good command under systemd. If you need playback to resume at a particular item rather than restart from the beginning, design and test that behavior separately; looping by itself does not preserve position across a new process.
Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled systemd service
Create a service for the known-good command
Use a service account rather than running the encoder as root. Store the command in a script or service configuration readable only by the account that needs it, and ensure the playlist and media paths are accessible to that account. The outline below shows the service structure; replace the example account, paths and command with the values already proven to work on your host. It is not a universal drop-in unit.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetUse the real executable and arguments in ExecStart; systemd does not interpret shell syntax there unless you explicitly invoke a shell. The sample restart delay is an example, not a YouTube requirement. Choose a delay appropriate to your host and avoid an uncontrolled rapid restart loop if the command is misconfigured. Keep credentials out of a publicly readable unit file. If you put a key in a separate protected configuration or environment file, restrict its permissions and avoid printing it in diagnostic output.
Enable and start the service

Save the unit under
/etc/systemd/system/with a descriptive name such asyoutube-playlist.service. Confirm the service account, working directory, playlist paths and command. -
Tell systemd to load the unit, enable it at boot and start it now:

Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room. A service marked active is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
The unit pattern is a practical Linux approach, not an official YouTube specification. A community repository demonstrates an FFmpeg service with Restart=always enabled at boot; adapt it to your own OS, command and files rather than copying an example without validation.

Test the reboot and the broadcast lifecycle

Use an unlisted test stream and the same playlist, service account, unit and YouTube settings you plan to rely on. Verify the manual command first.

Start the service and confirm that FFmpeg progresses, the playlist is being read, and Live Control Room shows a preview and acceptable stream health.

Reboot the server during the test. After it returns, check
systemctl statusandjournalctl, then confirm that FFmpeg is sending data and YouTube is receiving it.Best Value

Observe which playlist item plays after startup. If it starts from the beginning, that is the behavior of this configuration; do not describe it as resuming the prior position.

Check the YouTube broadcast and watch page separately. Record whether the original event continued, ended or changed, and repeat the test if you change the stream settings or recovery setup.
YouTube recommends testing a stream and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance describes connecting with a server URL and stream key, starting the encoder, and ending the stream by stopping content delivery; for scheduled streams it describes waiting for a preview and clicking “Go live.” Do not infer same-broadcast recovery from those normal lifecycle instructions. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a guarantee of recovery or a recommended reboot interval.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
The service is inactive after reboot
- Check boot enablement: verify that the unit is enabled and that the service name used in your commands matches the unit file.
- Check systemd output: inspect
systemctl statusand the unit’s journal for a missing executable, invalid unit setting, permission error or failed command. - Check access as the service user: confirm that the account can read the playlist, every media file and any required configuration, and can access the working directory.
FFmpeg starts but exits or cannot read the playlist
- Check paths and playlist entries: reboot can expose reliance on a mounted disk, relative path or interactive environment that is unavailable to a service.
- Check the exact input and loop configuration: run the known-good command as the same service account and verify that the playlist format is supported by the installed FFmpeg build.
- Check repeated restarts: review the journal for the first failure, not just later retries. Fix the underlying command or file-access problem before relying on the restart policy.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no healthy feed
- Verify the ingest URL and stream key against Live Control Room. A key is a credential; replace it if it was exposed.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health while the encoder is running. A running local process does not prove successful ingest.
- Confirm auto-start behavior: check the setting for the specific stream. If the broadcast requires a manual “Go live” action, the encoder restarting alone may not complete that step.
- Use YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance when the configuration or key appears to be the cause.
The feed returns but the live event or playlist position is different
Separate the service result from YouTube’s broadcast state and from playlist position. The service may have restarted correctly while YouTube did not continue the intended event, or the encoder may have started the playlist from its first item. Test and document each behavior independently; the cited YouTube guidance does not promise automatic continuation of the same watch page after a host reboot.
Self-managed server or cloud playlist service?
A self-managed Linux host gives you direct control of FFmpeg, files and service behavior, but you maintain the server, playlist and recovery checks. A hosted playlist service shifts encoder operation and media storage to the provider; check that it supports your YouTube workflow and the recovery behavior you need. Neither a host reboot policy nor a provider feature should be treated as proof that the same YouTube broadcast will resume unless you verify it.
