You can make a 24/7 YouTube stream from videos stored in Google Drive by using an encoder or hosted streaming service to play authorized files and send the output to YouTube Live. Drive stores the library; it is not itself a live encoder, and YouTube’s standard encoder workflow does not ingest a Drive folder directly. The playback setup must be able to access the files reliably.
Choose how the stream will run
There are two practical architectures: play and encode the videos on a computer that stays on, or use a hosted service that runs playback in the cloud. In both cases, the encoder sends an audiovisual feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming (YouTube’s encoder guide).

Google Drive is a storage location, not a guarantee that the chosen playback tool can stream its contents continuously. Confirm the specific tool’s file-access method, playlist controls, end-of-file behavior, reconnection process and monitoring. Those implementation details vary by product.

Prepare the video library and check rights
Confirm permission for every video and soundtrack
Before scheduling a stream, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and all included audio, including music. A copy in your Drive does not establish streaming rights. YouTube’s terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including music rights (YouTube Terms of Service).

YouTube scans live output for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even a creator with a license may need the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist (Copyright issues with live streams).
Make files and playback predictable
- Keep a record of each file and its rights status.
- Check that the playback setup can open each file using the permissions and location you plan to use for the live run.
- Test playlist order, looping, transitions, and what happens when a file ends or becomes unavailable.
- Run a test stream and check the YouTube preview and stream health before depending on the setup unattended.
Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Its current eligibility guidance also includes age-related conditions and safeguards, so review the YouTube live-streaming start guide for requirements that apply to your account.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; after activation, a stream may start immediately. Do not leave first-time setup until the scheduled start.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live broadcast. Set the title, description, visibility, audience settings and schedule as appropriate. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the viewer-facing event or video—from the stream, which is the encoder’s incoming audio/video feed (YouTube Live Streaming API documentation).
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room. Copy the YouTube server or ingestion URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
Connect playback to YouTube and test it
- Load the library in the playback setup. Select the authorized videos and confirm that the tool can reach them from their Drive location or from any permitted local copy it uses.
- Set the playback behavior. Configure the intended playlist order and repeat behavior in the chosen software or service. Verify what happens at the end of the list, when an individual file fails, and after a restart; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not prescribe those controls.
- Configure the encoder. Choose YouTube as the streaming destination, or enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If the encoder offers multiple YouTube ingestion protocols, use the option recommended by the encoder’s YouTube settings; YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS and DASH ingestion, with HLS intended for compatible encoders and higher latency than RTMP (YouTube live encoder settings and ingest).
- Start a test output and inspect the preview. Check that both video and audio are present and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed before starting the scheduled broadcast. YouTube says its encoder workflow creates a watch page and puts the channel live after the encoder starts sending content (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Watch the setup through a full playlist cycle. Confirm the intended loop and that file transitions do not leave the stream blank or silent. Also test the selected setup’s recovery and alerting behavior; these are product-specific, not guaranteed by YouTube’s general encoder workflow.
Plan continuity, monitoring and replays
A 24/7 stream depends on more than a reusable stream key. With a local encoder, power loss, an internet outage, a computer restart, expired Drive access or encoder failure can stop playback. With a hosted setup, check the provider’s file access, monitoring and reconnection features rather than assuming them.

Keep the distinction between a stream and a broadcast in mind when planning long-running output: reusing an encoder stream does not by itself make one viewer-facing broadcast run forever. YouTube’s API documentation describes each broadcast as a distinct video and says one stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts (YouTube Live Streaming API documentation).
For replay planning, YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer falls outside that stated automatic-archive guarantee, so do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 run to produce a complete replay. If retaining an archive matters, plan a schedule that fits YouTube’s stated limit and verify the resulting replay in Studio (Archive live streams).

Understand copyright and monetization limits
Permission to stream a video and eligibility to monetize a channel are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and assess the channel as a whole. Reused content may be ineligible when material from YouTube or another source is repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube says this policy is separate from copyright enforcement and can apply even when the creator has permission. Its 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is covered (YouTube channel monetization policies).
Do not assume that looping a library will qualify for monetization. Ads and fan-funding features are available only to eligible creators and streams; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve (Monetize your live stream).

Troubleshoot common failures
