That can restore a stream after some reboots or application failures, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: Task Scheduler does not know that an OBS window still open has lost its connection to YouTube. You must verify the encoder feed and YouTube broadcast separately.
Understand what needs to restart
Three states are easy to confuse:
- OBS is running: Windows has opened the encoder application.
- The encoder is streaming: OBS is sending video and audio to YouTube using the configured stream URL and key.
- The YouTube broadcast is live: YouTube has received the feed and the broadcast is available according to its settings.
A scheduled task can launch OBS. A validated OBS startup argument may also request that OBS begin streaming. Neither action alone proves the YouTube viewing page is live or that a running OBS process is still sending a healthy feed.

Prepare YouTube and OBS before automating
Set up the YouTube stream

In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if the channel has not streamed before. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Plan for that lead time rather than treating activation as immediate. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Choose its visibility and review its Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. These settings affect whether starting or stopping the encoder starts or ends the broadcast; check the selected stream, especially if you reused stream settings, because those choices may carry over. Locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube says stream keys are “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio, then update OBS with the replacement. YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings
Configure and test OBS manually

In OBS, configure the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and key in the stream settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to connect using the URL and key, then start streaming in the encoder. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Confirm the correct scene, lofi media source, audio, and encoder settings. Start streaming from OBS once by hand and check both OBS’s stream status and the incoming preview or live state in YouTube Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, whether you must also start the event in Live Control Room depends on the stream settings.

Do not automate an untested scene or feed. First make sure the selected video and audio are the intended ones and that YouTube receives them.

Test OBS’s start-streaming argument
An OBS forum contributor recommended adding --startstreaming after the OBS executable path so OBS starts its outgoing feed when launched. This is community advice from March 2024, not a Microsoft or YouTube feature or a guarantee for every OBS version. Validate it with the OBS version, profile, and launch method you actually use. Find the OBS executable used by your installation. A common install location is under
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe, but use the actual path on your computer. -
Test launching that executable with
--startstreamingafter the path. For example, in a shortcut’s Target field, the form is"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Replace the example with your real executable path.Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm that the expected OBS profile and scene load, OBS attempts to stream, and YouTube receives the feed. If this does not work with your installation, do not assume Task Scheduler will make it work; use a launch method validated for your version before proceeding.

Create the scheduled task
Choose At startup to launch OBS after Windows boots, even before a user signs in. Choose At log on if OBS needs the interactive user session or its logged-in profile. Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task. A basic task wizard may not expose all the settings needed for launch arguments and recovery.

On General, give the task a clear name, such as
Start OBS YouTube stream. Choose the account and sign-in behavior that match your OBS setup. If OBS needs a visible desktop session, an at-logon task for that account is the safer fit than assuming a startup task will have the same interactive environment.Special offer. On Triggers, choose New, then select At startup or At log on. Use one trigger appropriate to your setup; you can add both only if you have tested how duplicate launches behave.

On Actions, choose New and set the action to Start a program. Browse to the correct OBS executable. Put
--startstreamingin Add arguments only if your earlier test confirmed that OBS accepts it. Leave Start in set to OBS’s working directory if your setup requires one. -
Review Conditions and Settings for restrictions that could prevent the task running on your machine. Save the task, then use Task Scheduler’s run command to test the action and inspect Last Run Result if it does not start.
Microsoft also documents command-line task creation with schtasks /create, including /sc onstart for a startup trigger and /sc onlogon for a logon trigger. These options schedule a program launch; they do not validate OBS’s YouTube connection. Microsoft: schtasks create

Set a limited retry policy
In the task’s Settings tab, enable the option to restart the task if it fails, then set both a restart interval and a limited number of attempts. Microsoft’s restart-on-failure behavior requires a retry count and interval. Microsoft: TaskSettings RestartInterval

This is task recovery, not stream-health monitoring. It can help if Windows considers the scheduled task failed; it does not establish that Windows will detect a frozen OBS window or a disconnected YouTube feed while OBS remains open. Repeated launches may also conflict with an existing OBS process, so test the behavior rather than choosing an unlimited retry loop.
Test the recovery path, not just the task
After saving the task, test these scenarios deliberately, while you can observe the machine and YouTube Studio:
- Windows reboot: confirm the selected startup or logon trigger launches OBS as intended.
- OBS closed: run the task and confirm OBS opens and attempts to stream.
- Delayed network: if networking or a router comes up after Windows, confirm whether OBS connects once internet access is available. An OBS forum discussion notes that a PC can start before network equipment after a power outage; it does not establish one correct delay for every setup.
- YouTube receipt: check OBS’s encoder status and the incoming preview or live state in Live Control Room. A running application is not proof of a healthy feed.
If the network is not ready when OBS starts, consider a delayed trigger or a separate retry or health-check mechanism suited to your setup. Task Scheduler’s task-failure retry alone cannot guarantee recovery from a connection loss that leaves OBS running.
Know the limits of a 24/7 setup
- Power and login: automatic recovery depends on the PC receiving power and booting, Windows reaching the relevant startup or logon state, and the chosen account context being suitable for OBS.
- Network and ingest: the network must be available and YouTube must accept the encoder feed. These are separate from the task starting successfully.
- Broadcast state: Auto-start and Auto-stop settings influence how encoder actions affect the YouTube broadcast; scheduled-stream behavior can require an additional action in Live Control Room.
- Copyright and channel rules: streaming lofi you did not create or license can lead to copyright claims or interruption. Make sure you have the rights to the music and visuals, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies before leaving a stream unattended. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but that archive rule does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast must be split or that restarting preserves the same watch page. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an At startup trigger if I do not sign in to Windows?
Windows supports startup triggers, but whether OBS will work without an interactive user session depends on your OBS setup. If it needs the logged-in desktop or profile, use an At log on trigger for that account.
Does Task Scheduler detect when OBS is frozen or disconnected?
No. Its restart-on-failure setting concerns a task Windows considers failed; it does not by itself monitor the health of a still-running stream.
