You can loop a prepared story program indefinitely with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live through RTMPS. But a loop is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee: the encoder process, host, power, network and YouTube ingest must all remain available. This guide covers the media, YouTube setup, FFmpeg starting template and continuity measures—with audience controls for stories directed to children.
What you need before you start
- An adult-operated YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s livestreaming requirements.
- A continuous audiovisual program made from story videos and audio you have rights to broadcast.
- FFmpeg on a computer or server that can stay running, plus a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the stream.
- The current RTMPS server address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
You do not need a particular physical product for this workflow. A local computer or optional paid remote host is a deployment choice, not a YouTube requirement.
Prepare and review the story program
Clear every part of the media
Original stories do not automatically make every element in a video safe to broadcast. Check the rights for music, sound effects, illustrations, fonts, photographs and any other third-party material, including assets supplied by collaborators. YouTube says livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; do not assume that owning the script clears other assets.
Build a continuous sequence
Prepare the videos in the order you want them played. Review the complete sequence for gaps, black frames, clipped beginnings or endings, inconsistent audio levels and abrupt transitions. If you want a seamless loop, inspect the transition from the last item back to the first as well. FFmpeg can repeat an input, but it cannot fix a pause or awkward edit already present in the media.

Check compatibility before choosing a command
Note each file’s video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout and duration. The right FFmpeg command depends on those properties and on the FFmpeg build installed on your host. You may be able to copy compatible streams without re-encoding, or you may need to encode them to a consistent output format. Do not assume one option suits every source file.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Sign in to the eligible channel and open YouTube Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a livestream, then select delivery through an encoder.
- Set the audience designation accurately. If the material is directed to children, mark it as made for kids; the restrictions are explained below.
- Copy the current RTMPS server address and stream key from the stream setup. Use YouTube’s displayed values rather than a URL copied from an old example.
- Keep the stream key out of screenshots, public repositories and shared command transcripts. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
Loop and pace media with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely. The -re input option reads a file at its native frame rate, pacing file playback like real-time output. Both options belong before the relevant -i input. FFmpeg describes -re as useful when packet speed matters, such as streaming, and cautions against applying low-rate pacing to a real live capture device. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
This is a starting template, not a tested or universal command. Replace the placeholders locally; never publish your live key.

-f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-YOUTUBE-ENDPOINT/CURRENT-APP-PATH/STREAM_KEY"The example asks FFmpeg to encode video with x264 and audio with AAC, then use the FLV muxer for RTMP-style delivery. It intentionally does not prescribe bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings or an exact ingest URL: the suitable values depend on the media, encoder capacity and current YouTube guidance. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations in Live Control Room before settling those settings. For a playlist of separate files, do not assume this single-input loop will sequence them; prepare a compatible continuous program or configure FFmpeg’s inputs and mapping for your actual files.

Confirm that audio and video are present, playback is paced in real time, the stream reaches YouTube, and the loop returns cleanly to the beginning. A successful test only establishes that this particular configuration worked under those test conditions.
Deliver securely over RTMPS
Google describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” YouTube’s documented RTMPS ingestion uses port 443. The protocol, valid ingest endpoint, application path and key must all match the values and instructions for your broadcast. See Google for Developers’ RTMPS ingestion guide.

Put the key into your local command environment or a protected configuration, not into a public article or repository. Shell history and process listings may expose command-line arguments on some systems; use appropriate access controls and avoid sharing logs that contain the key. If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Keep the stream available continuously
-stream_loop -1 only handles end-of-file behavior for the input. It does not restart a crashed FFmpeg process, restore a failed host, repair a power loss or bring back an internet connection. A 24/7 stream is an operational target built from several dependent parts—not an effect guaranteed by a loop flag.
Local computer or remote host

No universally suitable server specification follows from the workflow alone. Encoding load varies with resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, filters and whether compatible video can be copied rather than encoded.

Add recovery and visibility
- Use a process supervisor or equivalent restart policy so an FFmpeg exit does not silently end the broadcast.
- Keep logs and configure alerts for a stopped process or lost ingest, so an interruption is noticed.
- Plan how to restore service after a host, power or network failure; supervision on one host cannot repair the host itself.
- FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer provides options that can attempt recovery after temporary output failures. Treat this as one resilience mechanism, not a guarantee of uptime. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
Choose the audience setting for children’s stories
If the program is directed to children, choose the made-for-kids audience setting in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube Help says made-for-kids livestreams disable live chat and chat replay; comments on archives and upcoming streams and reminder notifications are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance. These are platform restrictions, not a reason to label content inaccurately.

YouTube does not receive the stream
- Check the endpoint and key: use the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, including the correct application path.
- Check connectivity: RTMPS connections use port 443; confirm the host’s network or firewall permits the connection.
- Check channel eligibility: verify the channel and confirm it is not subject to a live-streaming restriction.
- Inspect FFmpeg output: look for input, encoding or connection errors without exposing the key in a shared log.
The stream stops when the video ends
Confirm -stream_loop -1 is before the input’s -i option. It loops that input only; it does not supervise FFmpeg or restart a failed machine.
Playback is too fast or otherwise mistimed
For file-based streaming, confirm -re is placed before the relevant input. Check the source frame rate and the FFmpeg log. Do not use file pacing as a substitute for correct handling of a live capture device.

Audio, video or transitions are wrong
Recheck source codecs, stream selection, mapping, frame rate and audio layout. Review the assembled program—including its loop boundary—before changing encoder settings. A format or mapping change may be needed for mixed-source playlists.
The process is running but the broadcast is offline
Check whether YouTube is still receiving the encoder output, whether FFmpeg logged a temporary output failure, and whether the network route is available. FIFO recovery can help with some temporary output failures, but persistent outages need intervention or a broader recovery plan.
